Looking Perfect at Plus Size: Which Actress Dressed Best?

We admit we were drooling over Elle MacPherson last night — that body! that hair! — but some other ladies on the Golden Globes red carpet also had us doing double takes. Octavia Spencer, Melissa McCarthy and Amber Riely all swathed their curves in gorgeous designer gowns, highlighting their best features and leaving us with a case of fashion envy.

Spencer — who nabbed a best supporting actress award and gave another moving acceptance speech — looked lovely in a lavender Tadashi Shoji V-neck cap-sleeve gown with jewel detail. The Help star was still searching for a Globes gown last week, but definitely found a winner.

Meanwhile, funnygirl McCarthy opted against a design from her own label, and instead chose a long-sleeved V-neck emerald gown by Badgley Mischka, sticking with several of the night’s big trends. Glee‘s Riley selected a dress by the esteemed design duo, too, rocking the red carpet in a strapless fire-engine dress.

All three stars were perfect 10s in their Globes gowns, but we want to know what you think. Tell us: Which plus-size star dressed best?

I never comment on these posts, but 1 of these things doesn’t belong here! Amber and Octavia look stunning, but Melissa, just looks huge! Not in a curvaceous, plus-size model, kind of way…

While a great actress, McCarthy could use a new stylist. One that won’t dress her in a hunter green tent.

Melissa’s hair would honestly ruin any outfit. I just cannot figure out that dent! So gorgeous normally, this was sadly just an all around failure.

Btw I cannot believe Amber qualified as plus sized…Really?

Personally, neither Octavia or Amber look “plus size.” They look amazing. I love Melissa, and the dress is gorgeous, but she needs some help in the posture/posing department, then this might have been a magical look for her. BTW..it doesn’t matter to me whether they are “twigs” or “plus size,” I just like to look at how they dress. It’s not the “plus size” that made me look, it was the “see how they dressed” that caught my attention.

Why do we have to pick which “plus” size girl looks best. I thought they all looked stunning! What beautiful women, with beautiful curves! They all looked the best!

I agree with Jen. Not only is this unnecessary, but it is completely obnoxious and insensitive. I by “this” I mean arranging for polls to be taken by categorizing individuals into a separate group based on their weight, which is offensive. I am surprised at People for an article like this. It would the same principle as separating Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep and saying which senior citizen was the sexiest. Um, rude! Let all lovely ladies be contenders in the same general poll. Classless People. And this is an opinion coming from a slender person.

I have a bit more to say. I think this was also strategic. Octavia Spencer looks dynamically attractive. She looks absolutely beautiful, her makeup, her hair, her gown. I think she would be a solid contender in the best dressed poll. Because of the biases that many in society have, people and People may have frowned upon Octavia being selected as better dressed than her thinner counterparts like Reese Witherspoon, Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman. I personally think she was much better dressed than those 3, which is why she wasn’t put in the same poll with them. Shameful.

I am a plus sized (aka overweight) woman and am tired of being judged because I wear a size 18. All three women look lovely but you can not honestly tell me they are not insecure about their weight. We live in a society where we are judged by our weight and looks (unfortunately).

Actually I was disappointed in Melissa’s dress. I think it wad matronly and made her look heavier; not flattering at all. If that is the best Badgley can do he should not make dresses for larger women. Melissa is a beautiful woman and I have seen on Say Yes to the Dress BIG some beautiful dresses that flatter large women and make them look fabulous and this dress did not do that. The other two women this story was about looked great. Melissa find a different designer for the next big event. You are beautiful, there is no reason you can’t get a beautiful, flattering gown to make you look fabulous.
