What a pair — and what a pear! LeBron James proposed to longtime girlfriend Savannah Brinson on New Year’s Eve, and over the weekend, the lucky lady flashed her brand-new bling: a pear-shaped diamond flanked by two glimmering baguettes.

James — whose salary will top $16 million this season — popped the question during a celebratory dinner at SL nightclub at the Shelborne hotel in South Beach. The couple’s children, LeBron Jr., 7, and Bryce, 4, were on hand to celebrate with mom and dad, too.

“It was so sweet to watch,” a rep for Remy Martin V, who hosted the dinner, tells PEOPLE. “Everyone is extremely happy.”

The party, co-hosted by Heat teammate Dwyane Wade and his girlfriend Gabrielle Union, was also a belated birthday celebration for James, who turned 27 the day before. Heat star Chris Bosh (who tied the knot lavishly in July) and Queen Latifah were also on the guest list of 60 friends and family members.

“A person like myself always needs a great sidekick and a person you can rely on no matter the circumstances. And she’s that,” James told Harper’s Bazaar of Brinson in 2010. “She’s got my back, and I love her for that.”

I’m just glad they’re the same race

Congratulations! It is good to know that Labron has not gone “Hollywood “he is a real man, living in reality and loves his people; his wife to be is a real woman for him, not some figament of a man’s imagination of what life should look like, if you have the money. Go Labron! the ring is coming this year.

Nikki – so the d-bag hasn’t asked you to marry him, but you’re still hanging around spitting out ba$tards for him. Oh, that’s the definition of a real woman these days? We call you something else.

@Pat Clark: My thoughts regarding Angelina Jolie and anyone else, white, black, hispanic, or any other race are exactly the same: children are a lifelong commitment, and all objective data confirm that a married, 2-parent household is by far the better environment in which to raise them. If you won’t commit YOUR life to another person for the purpose of raising a child that you bring into the world, what business do you have bringing the child into the world in a less than ideal environment for THEIR life? What business do you have committing THE REST OF SOCIETY to the likelihood of having to provide for a child in the event you are unable to do so adequately? Keep your knees together and your pants zipped; it is selfishness in the extreme to impose such a potential burden on both the child and on society. And it is racist of you to assume that such objective TRUTH has anything to do with race, though the CONSEQUENCES FOR CHILDREN sadly are suffered disproportionately by those in the African American community.

I love how they took their time. The ring is gorgeous and she is a beautiful young woman. Wishing LeBron and his soon-to-be new bride a lifetime of happiness and joy!!
