What a pair — and what a pear! LeBron James proposed to longtime girlfriend Savannah Brinson on New Year’s Eve, and over the weekend, the lucky lady flashed her brand-new bling: a pear-shaped diamond flanked by two glimmering baguettes.

James — whose salary will top $16 million this season — popped the question during a celebratory dinner at SL nightclub at the Shelborne hotel in South Beach. The couple’s children, LeBron Jr., 7, and Bryce, 4, were on hand to celebrate with mom and dad, too.

“It was so sweet to watch,” a rep for Remy Martin V, who hosted the dinner, tells PEOPLE. “Everyone is extremely happy.”

The party, co-hosted by Heat teammate Dwyane Wade and his girlfriend Gabrielle Union, was also a belated birthday celebration for James, who turned 27 the day before. Heat star Chris Bosh (who tied the knot lavishly in July) and Queen Latifah were also on the guest list of 60 friends and family members.

“A person like myself always needs a great sidekick and a person you can rely on no matter the circumstances. And she’s that,” James told Harper’s Bazaar of Brinson in 2010. “She’s got my back, and I love her for that.”

@Truth, it’s none of your business whether other people get married. It just isn’t. You have no right to dictate that others should live their lives the way you live yours. LeBron James’ marital status has absolutely zero impact on you. Why not just live your life how you see fit and let others do the same?

@Ginger: You’re right, it’s nobody’s business if someone is married. But unfortunately it’s EVERYBODY’S business if you volutarily have kids without being married. Have you ever looked at the correlation between crime and single-parent homes? Drug abuse and single-parent homes? Drop-outs and single-parent homes? Welfare and other social service dependency and single-parent homes? Those are prices WE ALL PAY!

Now I’m not saying ALL single-parent homes are wrong; fate and circumstance can intervene in the most resposible lives, and some folks who find themselves in that situaton do a heroic job of rising above it.

But to knowingly, voluntarily bring a child into that situation, by choice, is WRONG, and by example it is self-perpetuating, no matter how much money you have. You are fooling yourself to think otherwise. Sorry, but that is the TRUTH.

Ginger you won’t get through to “Truth”… Do you really think being married first is the only way to have kids? I was married first and still wound up raising my kids alone. I wish I had just had them and never had that ceremony… My kids are happy and well adjusted and this was AFTER my divorce not because I was married. I did it all on my own… Fortunately for her LeBron is there, he knows what it’s like to be abandoned by a father and I can’t see him doing that to his kids. And this is weather or not he is married to his baby’s mama…

@guest, you’re glad ‘they waited until they felt right’??? They made two kids before they got engaged–obviously SOMETHING was feeling “right”, but to them it wasn’t important enough to make an official commitment. Too many people have their values backwards.
