A Look Back at Vanessa Bryant’s ‘Apology’ Ring

If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, perhaps Vanessa Bryant will find solace in hers as she works through her divorce from husband Kobe Bryant. The mom of two filed for divorce in Los Angeles on Friday — though the fate of her $4 million diamond sparkler, a gift from her soon-to-be ex, is to be determined.

Kobe purchased the ring for Vanessa in July of 2003, three days after prosecutors declared he’d be charged with the rape of a 19-year-old employee at a Colorado resort where he’d stayed. Dubbed the “apology ring” — though PEOPLE reported that the basketball star had commissioned the bauble two weeks before charges were announced — it’s an 8-carat purple diamond set in a glimmering band.

The week before presenting his wife with the diamond, Kobe faced reporters during a press conference at the Staples Center in L.A. and admitted to cheating on his wife. “You’re my backbone,” he told Vanessa apologetically as she looked on solemnly. “You’re a blessing. You’re a piece of my heart. You’re the air I breathe. And you’re the strongest person I know, and I’m so sorry for having to put you through this and having to put our family through this.”

Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes Call Each Other to Ask: ‘What Are You Wearing?’

Victoria Beckham Gives Katie Holmes Fashion Advice
Ramey

Imagine ringing your best friend to ask that silly question girls ask, “What are you wearing?” and having her respond, “Why not something one of us designed?”

That’s the reality for real-life pals, Katie Holmes (who helms Holmes & Yang) and Victoria Beckham, whose colorful, yet restrained collection consistently sells out on luxury e-tailer Net-A-Porter. “We go to the same events, and we’ll call each other to ask, ‘What color are you wearing?’” Holmes tells ELLE. “I’m always interested in what she’s liking for the season.”

And Holmes isn’t the designer’s only A-list fan. “When we have Victoria’s stuff in the studio, it’s the first thing Cameron Diaz tries on,” stylist Rachel Zoe says of her client. “But any woman would feel sexy in her dresses.”

All of that feedback must be humbling for Beckham, who was anxious to tell another designer pal of plans to take her knack for fashion to the big leagues. “We went out to dinner one night, and he said, ‘I saw that you put out a collection,’” she recalls of breaking the news to Marc Jacobs. “I felt embarrassed to tell Marc Jacobs that I — me, ex-Spice Girl, married to a footballer — was creating a fashion line.”

Chris Evans Is ‘Guilty’ of Smelling Good

Chris Evans earned points with his pals when he scored the role of Captain America, but his choice to strip down for Gucci’s new Guilty Intense fragrance earned more than a few raised eyebrows.

“My buddies in Boston give me a hard time,” he admits to PEOPLE. Although the final result — those sexy ads costarring Evan Rachel Wood — are probably cool with the guys.

“I love that girl,” Evans says of Wood. “We hit it off right away. We had to roll around naked together, so it very easily could have become awkward and difficult, but we just laughed the whole time.” In fact, by the time the four-day shoot in Italy wrapped, Evans says they were “good friends.”

The Elizabeth Taylor Auctions: What the Stars Bought

Her jewelry auction shattered records with nearly $116 million in sales, but who actually came to Christie’s New York and purchased the pricey gems Elizabeth Taylor once owned?

Taylor admirer Kim Kardashian scored three Lorraine Schwartz bangles, shelling out $64,900 for the jade bracelets. “It’s not just a piece of jewelry,” she told InStyle.com. “She wore them constantly during the final years of her life and I believe they carry her spirit.”

Coincidentally, Schwartz herself scooped up a diamond fringe bracelet Taylor purchased from her nearly 10 years ago. “I was wearing it for her [70th birthday] party at the Bel-Air Hotel,” Schwartz recalled on her Facebook page, “and she kept calling me over to look at it and to try it on.” The next morning, the jeweler got a call from the movie star, who said, “I know who’s buying that bracelet for my birthday … I’m buying it!”

Georgia May Jagger’s Icons: Mom and Beyoncé

As the daughter of The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and model Jerry Hall, Georgia May Jagger has some pretty big shoes to fill — literally.

“My mum has the most amazing shoes, but she’s got such huge feet that they would never fit me,” she reveals to PEOPLE. “She’s a 42 and only Manolo Blahnik makes high heels for her shoe size, which is lucky.”

One thing the 19-year-old face of Rimmel clearly did inherit: dad Mick’s bee-stung pout. “My favorite way to wear lipstick is a matte, red lip,” she says of playing up her sizable mouth. “I try not to wear too much makeup on my skin because I find that sometimes [a lot of foundation] makes me look more tired and older.”

Other perks of being Georgia May include access to her mom’s vintage collection. “I get to borrow what I want, but I have to have supervision,” she divulges of disco-era duds including a tasseled red dress and a pair of hot pants. They’ve “got sequins all over them and they’re pretty cool,” she says coolly.
