Ivanka Trump Denies Copying Derek Lam's Design

Though she’s only been in the shoe game a couple of years, Ivanka Trump has stepped on some pretty big toes, according to one footwear designer.

WWD reports that the new mom, who also helms an eponymous jewelry collection, received a cease-and-desist letter from Derek Lam, who claims one of her designs is an exact replica of his.

“We have seen very similar copies before but we have never seen a shoe that perfectly copied,” Jan-Hendrik Schlottmann, chief executive officer of Derek Lam, told WWD.  The shoe in question, a $150 Cadie wedge from the Ivanka Trump Footwear Collection, is said to be knock-off of Lam’s $780 “Ayami” design (for a side by side comparison, click here.)

But Marc Fisher Footwear, the collection’s distributor, strongly denies the claims.

“The Lam wedge sandals are of a popular design type that has been used by numerous manufacturers for many decades,” the company says in a statement. “There is nothing iconic about the appearance of the Lam sandal.”

As for Lam’s lawyer’s insistence that Trump’s Cadie wedge “mimic each unique design detail,” the licensee says there are discernible differences. “The Ivanka Trump sandals prominently display the Ivanka Trump name, and there can be no confusion as to the source of the Ivanka Trump sandals.”

The designer has reportedly given Trump seven business days to pull the shoe off the market.

When reached on Thursday, representatives for Derek Lam said they are “no longer commenting on this matter.”

For real? That’s a regular shoe! Derek needs to sit down.

As silly as this sounds, there are others in the IT collection that look VERY similar to other designers, like Valentino. But it’s not like anyone thought Ivanka was designing them anyway.

I agree that it’s a very popular style of shoe, however, the problem in this case is that the design of the shoe is exactly the same. Every detail is copied exactly from the original shoe. It’s fine to copy the general idea of the shoe, but basically replicating it detail by detail is a little shady.

Yes, the shoes look identical – Personally the Ivanka one looks better and worth the $150.00 – I would not pay $700+ for that wedge – I don’t care who the designer is – that style has been done many times throughout the years. Mamab would know as she is ancient – but not cheap.

I like Ivanka’s better… much cuter!!! It does loov VERY similar though. Her company should just do a quick redesign, and make it even better!!!

The sad part about the fashion design industry, is that you can’t copyright anything. Everyone steals from each other, and it’s a bummer, but it’s just the way it is. Designers have been trying for YEARS to try and get some type of copyright on their garments, accessories, etc., but still they can’t find a way to do it since every decade steals a little something from the one before. Music is the same way. You hear new songs all the time that have the same riff as a song from years past, but it’s hard to put a patent on creativity/design when all we are doing is inspiring another generation.

Same shoe! She totally copied!

I actually prefer the Trump one, but the design is far too close. The front band meeting through the middle? They didn’t even try to pretend.

and I do hope that the distributor isn’t trying to claim that simply because her name is on it, that that makes it a different shoe?
