The Elizabeth Taylor Auctions: What the Stars Bought

Her jewelry auction shattered records with nearly $116 million in sales, but who actually came to Christie’s New York and purchased the pricey gems Elizabeth Taylor once owned?

Taylor admirer Kim Kardashian scored three Lorraine Schwartz bangles, shelling out $64,900 for the jade bracelets. “It’s not just a piece of jewelry,” she told InStyle.com. “She wore them constantly during the final years of her life and I believe they carry her spirit.”

Coincidentally, Schwartz herself scooped up a diamond fringe bracelet Taylor purchased from her nearly 10 years ago. “I was wearing it for her [70th birthday] party at the Bel-Air Hotel,” Schwartz recalled on her Facebook page, “and she kept calling me over to look at it and to try it on.” The next morning, the jeweler got a call from the movie star, who said, “I know who’s buying that bracelet for my birthday … I’m buying it!”

Schwartz also won a pair of earrings Taylor’s third husband, Michael Todd, created just for her. “The earrings were once made from paste, but she loved them so much that Michael Todd surprised her and made them real,” Schwartz wrote. “During the auction I could feel her saying to me, ‘Buy them, they’re my favorite.’ I feel like I have a part of her with me forever.”

Some of Taylor’s larger baubles ended up selling to companies. The 33.19-carat Krupp Diamond (above), a gift from Richard Burton, reportedly went for $8.8 million to Daniel Pang, a representative of Korean hotel conglomerate E-Land, which plans to display the treasure at its E-World theme park in Daegu, according to the AFP. The heart-shaped Taj Mahal diamond went to a private buyer for $8.8 million, as well. And according to the New York Post, Bulgari anonymously bought back a staggering $20 million worth of jewels, including a 52.72-carat sapphire-and-diamond sautoir for $5.9 million and an emerald-and-diamond necklace for $6.1 million.

The auction drew quite the stylish crowd, too; Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and Jennifer Tilly were spotted at Christie’s Tuesday evening, and Sofia Coppola, Anna Sui and Jill Zarin perused the Haute Couture sales on Wednesday and Thursday.

Following Wednesday’s couture sale, supermodel Coco Rocha walked away with Taylor’s yellow-and-pink 1980s Givenchy jumpsuit. “I was amazed that I actually won,” she told Style.com on the way out. “Everyone has been asking what I am going to do with it — I am going to wear it. Right now, I’m thinking next year’s Costume Institute Ball would be perfect.”

Kim K is not a ‘star’. She’s an infamous person. I wish you all would find some credible reason to write about this person instead of, using someone else’s life or celebrity as an excuse to write about Kim K. Thanks.

any of you questioning motives and what this moneycan be used for… do you know how much money she donated in her lifetime, how much she donated in her will, do you know where this money is going to? No? well shut up!

People need to STOP assuming that people that can afford such luxuries do not give to charity! People with money give waaaay more than what I can ever afford to donate and I appreciate and acknowledge that. Also, Liz left and continues to leave a window of wealth contributing to AIDS research etc..why are people so angry with rich people? they are not the reason to so many problems!!!! we have sooo much work to really fix and heal the poverty of this earth but crying about someone with a couple extra bucks, isn’t it!

You people are unbelievable.. she could have fed so many children.. blah, blah, blah.. so could all of you… she worked very hard for what she bought for herself and many of these items were gifts from those who admired here.. it is not a celebrity’s duty to feed all the starving children of the world… it’s everyone’s job as a human being and she donated way more in her lifetime than of you sitting on your @sses, posting on this story. She was entitled to spend her hard earned money any way she chose too… are all of you donating the amounts you spend on your hair, your nails, your cell phone, your tv’s etc and so forth and so on… because so many who have less than you could be posting the same thing.. for what you spent on that I-Pad, that laptop, that pair of boots you don’t need you could have fed a starving child.. right in this country no less… cast stones, expect them to be tossed back your way.

It’s a shame that Kim no class Kardashian got her money hungry paws on something as beautiful and precious as Liz personal belongings.

Enough already with feeding the children of the World. Let their Countries look after them. If you are poor here, then don’t have children and get a job and stop depending on the govt. to take care of you.

The proceeds of the auction are going to her estate. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of programs related to the auction are going to her AIDS charity. Huge difference.
