What Did the Stars of ‘Young Adult’ Wear in High School?

The stars of Young Adult cleaned up nicely for a New York Cinema Society screening of the film in Manhattan over the weekend — but they didn’t all grow up so glam.

Thinking back to their high school days of questionable fashion choices and fleeting trends, some of the actors — whose film focuses on a woman who returns home to chase her high-school sweetheart — took a sartorially scary trip down memory lane.

Charlize Theron was lucky enough to avoid bad school fashions thanks to her school’s rules. “We had uniforms,” she told reporters of her South African school. “It was a light-blue dress with navy blazers, navy sweaters and Mary Janes.” Writer Diablo Cody had the same guidelines. “A plaid burgundy-and-gray skirt with a button-down shirt,” she shared.

Katy Perry’s Meow! Fragrance Is ‘More Edible’ — But Don’t Eat It!

She’s spent the past year on tour in a world covered with peppermints and cotton candy, and that saccharine inspiration has found its way into Katy Perry‘s new scent Meow!, in Nordstrom stores this week.

“The first fragrance (Purr) was more floral, by a long while, and this one is a lot more edible,” she told reporters last week during a launch event in New York City. “It’s the perfect snapshot of where my head is right now, especially being on tour,” during which her team pumps wafts of cotton candy into the arenas each night.

The scent features notes of honeysuckle and pear, with a base of vanilla, musk and amber. Prices range from $45 for a 1.7-oz. bottle to $65 for a 3.4-oz. spray.

The design of the pink, cat-shaped bottle was inspired in part by Perry’s youth. “I grew up going to flea markets, and all the vintage stores and the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles,” she explained. “I’d always look for milk glass — that beautiful, vintage milk glass that held candles, or salt and pepper. I definitely wanted to use it for Meow!.”

Would You Wear Clear Shoes Like Dakota Fanning?

Dakota Fanning Marc Jacobs
Bill Davila/Startraks

Dakota Fanning has a sense of style that’s generally spot-on. The young fashionista has relationships with a roster of fabulous designers, and looks put together every time she leaves the house — even if she is just going to class.

But sometimes even the chicest stars can make minor mistakes. Case in point: Fanning wore clear pumps to Marc Jacobs’s spring 2012 presentation in New York in September, a move that’s often considered a fashion faux pas. However, given her age — she’s just 17 — and the light color of her dress, it’s not necessarily an awful decision — maybe she can pull it off. Regardless, we want to know what you think of the look.

Victoria Beckham on Designing: ‘This Isn’t Just About a Celebrity Line’

Her most recent collection earned raves at New York Fashion Week, but Victoria Beckham often takes the praise she receives with a grain of salt.

“I was very aware of people’s preconceptions,” she tells WWD of breaking into the fashion industry several years ago. “But I never went into [it] trying to prove myself to anybody other than myself — I was just following my dreams, doing what I love to do.”

Calling fashion her “passion,” Beckham says she strives to make women “feel empowered, feel beautiful and feel confident” in her clothes. “I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve stood on quite a few red carpets myself, and I understand that a dress has to look good not just from the front, but from all angles, whether you’re standing or whether you’re sitting,” she says. “And I think I know how a woman wants to look, and how she wants to feel.”
