Alicia Silverstone: Secondhand Shopper with a Cause

Rescuing lost dogs with her mom at a young age really made an impression on Alicia Silverstone. In her late teens, the actress started exploring cruelty-free products; by age 21 she was a full-on vegan; and at 23 she was subscribing to an eco-friendly lifestyle.

“It took so much effort to find out what products aren’t tested on animals — that was an ordeal,” Silverstone told reporters recently during a press event for EcoTools in New York. “But then when I became into eco, it took out all of that: if you’re using all-natural products that have no toxic chemicals, it narrows the playing field.”

These days, the actress is a strong advocate for all things green — she even makes the very anti-Hollywood choice of buying used clothes. “My second stop would be organic cotton,” she said. Scouring Craigslist for household items — “Then you get it really locally, and it already exists,” she explained — she stressed that she doesn’t sacrifice taste and style when shopping secondhand, either. “I realize if you’re not happy with what you have, you want to change it out more,” she shared.

Though she admitted that sometimes finding specific products can take time — “Shoes are a little trickier, but they exist,” she said — making these informed choices is necessary in her mind. “I’m trying to save the planet,” she said. “I’m trying to save our lives.”

While Silverstone doesn’t have the time to make her own eco-friendly beauty and home products just yet — “I have so little time to even take a shower,” the new mom and blogger joked — she said it’s not an impossibility. “Maybe there will be a time where I’m making brownies for my kids and making soap,” she mused, “and that’s all I’m doing.” Tell us: Do you keep your home green?

Alicia Silverstone: Secondhand Shopper with a Cause – Our Guilty Pleasure on

diggity on

It’s one thing to state yourself as an animal lover, but something else to actually LIVE it. I commend Alicia on being a vegan and friend to not only animals, but the health of the planet.

Kel on

She puts some these hollywood ladies to shame.

sassy mommy on

Please I think I just threw up in my mouth. I am sooooooooo tired of the earth friendly do gooders. I love meat and will never ever give it up. I don’t mind buying second hand but not to ‘save the earth’. it saves me money. Really, get off the pedestal and come down where the rest of us mortals live.

Sue on

Sassy….why be a hater?

Brooke on

I agree with Sassy mommy.

PLEASE stop forcing this down our throats. I mean I think its great trying to do a little here and there, but to get so marinated in the whole issue DOES make me go “ugh” as well. I love meat, as well as vegetables. God gave us control over the animals so we aren’t mean people, its just the way it is. I am a total animal lover, but I also know how life is.

Sue on

Oh…and no one is putting themselves on a pedestal. Alicia is an amazing role model and believe or not, lots of us “mortals” aspire to and actually DO live a similar lifestyle to Alicia. People like you are becoming the minority.

Nerdista on

It’s great that she’s into conservation but I do have a problem with her “all natural” ideals. Chemicals and science have saved more lives than eating organic ever will. Let’s not forget that arsenic is natural as well. Everything in moderation!

Amanda on

@sassy mommy: Really? You are an extremely hateful person. We should commend her for doing good things instead of being mean about it. I am a vegan, as well as an “Earth Friendly Do Gooder”, and I don’t say you’re a bad person because you eat meat. Get a life, and try to be nice to people, it won’t kill you.

Kristen on

I’m sure glad there are people like Alicia Silverstone to help make up for the impact selfish people like Sassy Mommy make on the earth. Thanks for being an awesome role model, Alicia.

MerieCherie on

Interesting observation: meat-eaters are cranky, negative folks; vegans are kind, happy people. Hmm!

Kasee on

Brooke, I don’t believe anyone “shoved it down your throat” – you chose to click on the story and read it. Also, many people are vegan or vegetarian because of the way a lot of livestock are filled with hormones, treated terribly during their lives, and then slaughtered inhumanely. I realize that is not every animal, but that is the story for many of them. Wanting this to be avoided is not about being on a pedestal, it’s about having compassion for other living things that are able to feel pain just as much as humans.

janey on

I think the message she’s trying to send is somewhat admirable; but I have a really hard time taking her seriously, considering she named her kid “Bear Blu”. :-\

FWIW, I also don’t think she’s trying to come across as sanctimonious or smug. She’s concerned about the environment, and that’s okay. She’s not saying “YOU NEED TO STOP EATING PRINGLES RIGHT NOW”; or trying to ram her lifestyle down anyone else’s throat, for pity’s sake.

Also, I’m with her on the chemical thing. I once accidentally mixed Scrubbin’ Bubbles and Windex, and it melted my plastic bathroom faucet handle. Yikes.

alrightythen on

Everything in moderation? Really?

That mentality explains why so many humans are afflicted with the diseases we have today. Our ancient ancestors weren’t ridden with toxins as we are today. And we don’t have a choice. They’re everywhere…from how food is grown and processed to the harmful vapors that leach out of the vinyl in your new car.

When’s the last time you read an article like this anyway? Are articles like this really that pervasive? All I hear about is Kim Kardashian this, Demi Moore that anymore. I found this snippet refreshing, and intelligent actually.

We now return you to your meat sandwich.

Sue on

Very well said, Kasee!

Saiph on

@Brooke, who agreed with SassyMommy,
While your perspective that “God gave us control” over animals isn’t logically arguable, the conclusion you draw — that this means that “we aren’t mean people” — demonstrates a regrettable factual ignorance. Please consider learning a bit about factory farming, and then honestly ask yourself if what happens to billions of factory-farmed animals qualifies as “mean.” I think you may find that “mean” is an understatement. Consider what our world would be like if people had stopped working to change other unjust systems just because some other folks got tired of being “marinated” in them. If you truly are a “total animal lover,” how can you write off the hopeless suffering of billions of sentient beings? It strikes me that that’s the sort of thing that God calls upon us to open our hearts to. Blessings.

Heather Teeter on

I think it is interesting for a meat eater to say that veganism, or vegetarianism is shoved down their throat. In my experience (as shown by many of the more negative posts) it is the meat eaters who seem to shove their agenda down people’s throats. I mean, with the millions of McDonald’s advertisements, you think vegans could have a few of their own. Get off your pedestal??? Being a vegan is one of the toughest things I have ever done, and it certainly has nothing to do with being ‘better’ than anyone else. It is about compassion, something that you should consider before writing a hateful post SassyMommy.

Christina on

The funny thing is, I’m a graduate student at a business school right now, and the funny thing they’re stressing is being “green” and “eco-friendly” because it’s just cheaper. Businesses are spending so much money these days trying to clean up their image, that the most recent Eco-effectiveness (not Eco-efficient) finance studies are showing that it’s just cheaper to go green. It’s a smart business decision these days. So suck it up and try, sassy mommy.

tinasfab4 on

Wow, she never said everyone needs to do what she’s doing! She is a true role model, by doing what she believes is positive and has an impact. I can’t believe the negativity! I’m a meat eater who tries to recycle and reuse, and I love my pets. AND I own a resale shop! Go Alicia!

JAK on

To people like sassy mommy: you may not live a lifestyle like Alicia’s, but that doesn’t mean you need to bash it! I am certainly not vegan, nor to I shop secondhand, but I do try to do little things like use reusable grocery bags. I commend people like Alicia who are doing everything they can do save our planet, because I’m certainly not!

Noodles on

She’s not forcing vegetarianism down anyones throat. You can eat meat and she’s not saying you shouldnt do it. Shes saying she doesnt. People who have convictions are not ‘uppity’. You only make yourself sound extremely intolerant and uneducated when you knock someone’s lifestyle that they believe in and live for.

Truthbetold on

Quite frankly, I will never be an eco-centric (yes, I think I just made up that clever play on words)nor will I be vegan. That being said, I will take reading articles about sweet, little, non showering Alicia to ANOTHER poorly written article about one of the Kardashians. Or maybe this week it will be how Brad and Angelina MAY buy the same brand of toothpaste. (GASP, do you think it’s because he secretly misses Jen??) OR Something as equally as annoying.

This is an awesome article! Love being inspired about something wortwhile…

Way to go Alicia. In a world filled with Coach, Prada and so on. I’mn glad there’s level headed people still in this world especially celebrity’s. I think it’s outrageous to spend 50,000 on a dress and so on. It’s getting so crazy whatever happened to Suzy Shier Jeans, Or a Blue Notes top?? Seriously u don’t need millions to look good.!!!!

jennrae on

The only reason I’m not vegan or vegetarian is because I don’t have the discipline or the willpower. I definitely don’t hide behind “god’s permission” to eat meat. Just use your brain. Look at these beautiful, living, breathing animals…we are all guests on this earth, what right do we have to take the life of another living thing just to fill our bellies? There are other delicious alternative sources of protein without killing innocent creatures. It’s your choice, you don’t have to be a vegetarian, but don’t hide behind the bible to justify it. It’s common sense to treat the planet and all of the living creatures who inhabit it with care and respect.

Rolando on

Many men, have loved to get their hands on Alicia Silverstone meat! She was the hottest “it gurl” yus.. I ted “it gurl of da 1990′s.” She converted alot o’ men, into Veganism… they only eat-hur luv u! Kissy Kissy! Den dey quit moo-meat, chicken… and da evil french fries! It goode she buy $econd hand store and give to poor chillin! She nice lady! 2 bad she married :(

Sassy and Brooke, calm yourselves. Nobody is forcing anything down your throat. You came here and read about someone speaking their truth. If it makes you feel guilty and angry, go elsewhere. As for chemicals, nerdista, they may have saved more lives than organic food but they’ve also obviously killed far, far more. Platitudes, even with the word “science” added to them, are still platitudes.

Lala on

While I’m not vegan or vegetarian, I don’t bash those who are. In regards to God giving us power over animals, I do understand what that person was saying. But I don’t think God intended us to abuse and torture the animals, before slaughtering them. I eat mostly organic, because I chose not to put more unnecessary chemicals in my body, and my families bodies. I also try to eat free range animals, that are treated humanly – and to use all natural products. It’s not a hard thing to do, and it’s a choice that some people make, while others don’t. I sometimes shop second hand, because you can find some cool items!! :)
Reading this article, I don’t think she’s shoving anything down our throats. She gave an interview, to a magazine, that promotes her lifestyle. If you don’t like this lifestyle, don’t buy the magazine – or click on this link!

Brooke – I appreciate your comments, and I am a Christian, but I’m not sure God “gave us control over animals.” Why do some Christians believe that humans are the ultimate of God’s creatures? All of God’s creatures are to be respected for what/whom they are. Besides, human beings are responsible for the filth and ravaging of this earth. — Somehow, we must find a balance – a way to respect this earth and ALL God’s creatures, and a way to maintain our modern advances, such as medicine.

hito on

If she likes living that way, that’s fine for her. We DO have too much waste on this planet, but God created animals for food and clothing (which ones are specified in the Bible) and buying secondhand is ok once in a while, but she probably does it also because she’s not rich.

Honor on

I to am a vegan, and find her dedication inspiring! Sassy Mommy and others like her need to consider how their choices are impacting others and what sort of example their setting for their children. Bitterness… let’s start there. I’ll bet you haters are real “cupcakes” to live with!

heather on

Im so sorry but GOD Almighty Himself gave us animals to EAT. If I want to eat meat then its my business, if you dont then good for you but dont push it on me either.

Matt on

I am all for natural items, I do eat meat. You will not save the planet if you don’t keep the numbers of animals down, that is why hunting is so good. God made these animals for us to eat and to give us nutrition. If we didn’t eat animals then they would over populate the earth and then where would you be? She may buy second hand clothes but by doing that she will not save the planet, but she will save some money compared to the over indulgent, look at me types who think they can’t wear the same jeans twice. As far as those of you who want to eat only vegetables, that’s your choice, but lay off of people who want to eat meat or buy products made of leather, that is their choice. Nothing beats a good rare juicy steak, oh and a potato! See, we can get along. Therefore PETA can go away now since we all agree to disagree. God bless and eat more meat!

Lena on

No. mostof the time ecologially friendly is not always economically friendly.

guest on

She’s so eco friendly that she even named her child bear. What a role model!

oh god, why do we have to bring “god” into everything?

WOW! good for you sassy mommy… you are officially one the most selfish, hateful, careless people on the planet. thank you alicia, for everything you do to bring awareness to the issues of animal abuse and the sad, sad state of our planet. ugh, thanx sassy mommy… wasted breakfast because you made my stomach turn. PUKE!!

DVH on

Ooooh well said Kristen. I’ve been living Alicia’s lifestyle for 30 years now, getting more deeply involved with each year……no products tested on animals, no meat, organic foods as much as possible, and yes I buy second hand. LOVE Craigslist and recycling centers. Who’s pushing it down your throats? It’s a story about how this actress lives her life. Amazing how the ones having kids aren’t interested in preserving the enviro for them. Incredible. Why don’t you go find something else to do, like count all the animals that have become extinct just since you were born.

Linda on

I am so sick of seeing morons reply with the fact that they love meat and will continue to eat it. NOBODY CARES. So, you’re a selfish, self-centered a-hole. Why do you feel the need to post it? People around you surely are aware of that fact. Another human being actually cares about the planet and the animals on it, why feel a need to say you are a selfish jerk and don’t? Alicia Silverstone is not putting herself on a pedestal, she’s simply stating how easy it is to live a lifestyle that considers others – animals and humans – and those of you who feel a need to lash out with the fact that you don’t are truly pitiful.

Kate on

I am trying to figure out why people are so negative when a celebrity does something good – whether they agree with it or not. Clearly, those negative Nancys posting here read about celebrities as they are on people.com. Alicia does not appear to be putting herself on any so-called pedestal or “shoving” her ideals down her throat; she’s simply discussing what she does and what makes her feel better. It’s a sad thing when people criticize when it’s not necessary. She didn’t say you or I have to follow this path; it just works for her and she does it for specific reasons.

And to Nerdista – your point about arsenic didn’t even make sense as that’s something naturally occurring. Enough studies show that what you eat (organic! healthy!) can do far more than pumping chemicals (not naturally occurring) into your body. If you’re going to make a point, make it valid.

Liz on

I admire that Silverstone lives out her ideals and makes the choices that are right for her. However, I think that respect works both ways. Just because someone chooses not to be vegan doesn’t make them any less concerned about the environment than someone who is. I’m not vegan, it is just not a diet I can make work for me but that doesn’t mean I can’t do other things to help the environment. If you don’t want to be judged for your choices, don’t judge me or anyone else because they choose differently.

No matter how sweet and g rated an article is, there will always be haters. Such a shame, with real problems in our world, why are we hating on someone trying to do good? Alicia Silverstone should be comended for the good things she is doing and trying to do, these things might not affect us now but they affect the future of our planet and the people we will leave behind when our time on earth is done. Most people take for granted all of the earth’s resources and may not be aware of the lives lost and crimes committed in order to illegally obtain some of those resources. Little things make a difference, I eat meat on rare occasions but I do try to recycle whenever I can. I am sure I will get slack for my comment but oh well.

Marky on

One thing I have done, as a meat-eater, is to research who raises various animals in humane ways, as well as slaughters them in humane ways. Temple Grandin,PhD, who has designed more than a third of the slaughter facilities for cattle and hogs, designs facilities which prevent animals from feeling fear, and being slaughtered so quickly they die instantly and care is taken that the animal never sees the person who is doing the slaughter to protect the animal, as well. Temple Grandin is known as the woman who is able to think like a cow. She herself is a meat-eater.

My nephew is a vegan, and the thing I appreciate about him is that he doesn’t accuse meat-eaters of “putting dead carcasses” on the table, or say he is disgusted and sickened by a dead body being served. That’s the problem in this argument; too much venom. And don’t say vegan’s never do that; I’ve known them to.

When we have a family meal, we make certain he has dishes to eat, and he and his wife (who is not vegan) bring a dish or two for the meal, and he utters not one peep about the meat, and we don’t rag on him for being vegan. Everyone needs to stay calm and not insult anyone.

You’re not going to change my mind about how I eat, and I won’t try to change yours; what you eat is your business. In the meantime, I buy used and new, I recycle, even when I travel, and I eat free-range, natural, and fresh foods. I do as much as I can to make a positive impact on the planet.

I like her comments, but wish evoyerne would stop’ referring to mainstream (stubborn ignorance in manufacturing) products as regular’. They actually are NOT regular in any sense of the word. As soon as synthetic dyes, and/or artificial contents of any kind become the standards in producing anything, it can no longer be considered regular’, but quite IRREGULAR. REGULAR’ would denote a kind of classic availability of ingredients that should be quickly biodegradable, without harming the environment. I can’t think of any modified’ construction of apparel anywhere that would be safely called regular’. SO (imho), I’d have to say that the clear-thinking organics that are currently on line with regular’ old fashioned goodness, genuine contents of natural ingredients, would have to be the REGULAR’ materials we want on our bodies, in our homes and fields & on our plates. Of course, I know what AS meant by her statement, but I truly think that if we all began calling it what it (truly) is, we could rapidly change the societal perspective, and thus CHANGE THE WORLD! It IS all in the way we look at it, is’t it? MY REGULAR’ is WORTHY of being called regular’. Anything less, well, just doesn’t quite measure up, does it? No more false labels, please. Make evoyerne accountable for what they make and push over as something else. It’s wrong, so say so! My next (connecting thoughts) coment is: Stop buying it. AND, If you can get (anything) here, don’t buy it from anyplace else, not China, not Mexico. Let’s support the good people of USA.
