Jessica Simpson: I've Learned from My Style Mistakes

Jessica Simpson may be one of the pros on NBC’s upcoming show Fashion Star, but she admits her own style choices haven’t always been the best.

“There are a lot of things I’ve worn and look back on and think, ‘Oh, my,’” the mom-to-be recently told PEOPLE. “When it comes to beauty, I think a big misconception is the tanner you are, the more beautiful you are. It’s not always true. I look back on a lot of pictures where I’m really tan, and I’m like, ‘Whoa!’”

But Simpson has only learned from her mistakes — and they’ve inspired her to strive to keep her Jessica Simpson line of shoes and apparel impeccable.

“I’m in all those meetings,” she said. “I know the zipper pulls, I know what you’re going to be purchasing next spring. I know what’s going to be trending. It’s really fun to take all those meetings and try and play great guessing games of what the public’s going to buy.”

Simpson, who said she’s a big fan of the current colorblocking trend, is also in the know when it comes to taking care of her skin. The former Proactiv spokeswoman recently teamed up with skincare expert Nerida Joy to introduce BeautyMint, an affordable, personalized line sold on the web.

“We go to department stores and we have no idea what these people are telling us,” Simpson said. “We just know to get the ‘it’ product because it’s working on this A-celebrity. It’s kind of like you’re spending too much money on something you don’t really know.”

BeautyMint requires taking a quiz to “get to know about your skin,” similar to JewelMint, StyleMint and ShoeMint, which tailor fashion offerings to a shopper’s style preferences. Simpson said the questionnaire “really acts as a professional, helping you, guiding you through your skincare regimen. It definitely will only give you products that work for your skin.”

First-time BeautyMint customers: Through Dec. 3, receive $10 off of your first BeautyMint purchase using code PEOPLE at checkout.

hollywood’s golden column is the most powerful column in the history of motion picture and television online. why doesn’t the media ever do stories when there is a tragedy on a movie set. when someone is killed? they do stories about other people being killed all the time. it is because the major network news channels are owned by the major motion picture studios. the major studios are behind most of the major pictures being made. they want to protect their name. it all has to do with money. everybody sweeps everything under the carpet. they have been doing that for over seventy five years. everybody is sleeping in the same bed. they should pay for their mistakes. they have killed men, woman, children and animals and have gotten away with it.

@Greg, you are a crazy person. Take your conspiracy theories back to your mom’s basement.

Back to Jessica. As much as I don’t like her, I do admire that she’s built up a billion dollar company, and she puts out some cute stuff. I love her shoes!

Does anyone actually think one is prettier the tanner one is? What a bizarre statement. And there’s no way she’s in those meetings. She was selling her (plastic) bags on QVC a while ago and couldn’t tell you a single detail about any of her items. She deferred to her mother to answer each question. At one point a model came out wearing a dress that Jessica thought was pretty, and she said as much, so her mom had to tell her, “Um, Jess, that’s from your line!” She was an uninformed mess. For her to be considered a professional regarding anything related to fashion is a joke. Her name may be on it, but the only one picking out fabrics and buttons is her mom and a staff of designers. I also wouldn’t be surprised to learn that she dropped out of school in the fourth grade.

Jessica is a beautiful woman and with an excellent taste for clothes…..playing dumb is an act, that no too many people know…….she is a millionaire .

@jennrae I actually believe that I look better with a tan. I feel like it makes me look healthier and that helps my self-confidence.
