Dakota Fanning’s Marc Jacobs Ad Banned for Being Too Racy

11/09/2011 at 12:00 PM ET

Dakota Fanning Oh, Lola
Courtesy Marc Jacobs

Dakota Fanning‘s latest role has received a big thumbs-down in the U.K.

The actress’s recent magazine ad for Marc Jacobs’s Oh, Lola! perfume is too suggestive, Britain’s advertising watchdog has ruled, and must be pulled immediately, the BBC reports.

The ad in question shows the 17-year-old American actress in a thigh-length dotted dress with an oversize flower-topped bottle of Oh, Lola! resting between her legs.

The U.K.’s Ad Standards Authority determined that “the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality. Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualize a child.”

The ASA ruled that the ad was irresponsible, likely to cause “serious offense,” and must not appear again.

Coty UK, the maker of the perfume, had argued that the image was “provoking but not indecent.” On Tuesday, Marc Jacobs released a statement, calling the banning “unfortunate.” He wrote:

“It was our pleasure to work with Dakota Fanning for the Oh, Lola! campaign. She is a smart, pretty, interesting, talented young woman and we would never have suggested an advertising concept that we thought was inappropriate. I believe she is also very thoughtful about the projects she takes on and would not have done something that she felt was in questionable taste. It’s really unfortunate that people have taken anything negative from what we believe is a really good campaign and one that so perfectly embodies the fragrance.” Tell us: Do you think Fanning’s ad is too racy for print?

katharine on

its fashion, not sex. Dakota is a classy young woman.

Jackson on

That’s dirty.

Elle on

How is it too racy? It is very pretty and sweet.

Kim on

I don’t see where this add is a problem at all.

LW on

Yes I do. They clearly have her dressed and made up to look young. Try waiting til she’s 18, doing her make up and dress to have her appear to be a woman, not a child.

Mary Anne on

The perfume should have been resting “on” her leg.

mel on

if she were 20 or older i dont think it would be too racy. but the fact that she is a minor makes it racy. they should have found an older model for that ad if the fact that she is a minor wasnt a suggestive part of the ad. but the makers of the advertisement were VERY aware of how old she is and what its suggesting and chose to do it anyway. they could have saved it for a different model or a later date if they were set on using Dakota.

Cindy on

Datoka’s picture is to provactive for being a teenager. There are sick perverted people out there that would take the meaning of the ad the wrong way.It is dirty.

Amanda on

I do not see anything wrong with this ad. Yes, she could have been holding the bottle or it could have been placed next to her but then they would have found something else wrong with the ad. That is all it is an ad nothing more.

bella on

Good Lord people!

1.Youre NOT going to tell me you or anyone in your family have never rested anything on your legs like that.

2. Where do you people live, Little House on the Prairie?
Its NOT racy at all!

Witch w/a B on

I have seen racier pictures with younger teens on facebook! Seriously!

Sadie on

She looks like she’s about 12

Lala on

i think it was a good call, she is only 17 not 18. i think its weird to use children in ads that are meant to sell to adults, it is over sexualizing children. it’s part of the world we live in but it doesn’t mean its right.

April on

If the UK believes that ad is too suggestive for a minor, good for them pulling it. Glad someone has standards and sticks to them!

Amy on

It’d dirty if you have a dirty mind.

Cindy on

It is suggestive, and not a very flattering. It’s like Madonna’s ad with Dolce and Gabbana..her on a couch spread-eagle, and one comment said..”Oh look, Madonna’s trying to sell us her crotch.” Redo the picture..Dakota doesn’t look very pretty in it anyway. And, she’s woman now not a little girl.

Kimberly on

Oh please, give me a break. I love how all these regulations are made by men who probably watch porn anyway.

jean on

The British said it was to racy have u guys seen their newspaper the middle of the page is normally a topless woman, as a centerfold I have seen it really. What in the world. I like the add. I have four daughters of my own its not a bad add.

Slna on

I think the flower is in the wrong place! Don’t you remember when your mother would say “save your flower for marriage”

Agustina on

And the problem with this ad is…? I just don’t see the problem. In fact, it’s a nice picture.

Angie M. on

The ad would be fine if the perfume bottle was not resting where it is. It is literally between her legs. Not cool.

amo on

for those of you with your head in the sand–UK censorship had this right. Marc Jacobs completely exploited Fanning, he goes too far sometimes. As most know, a young girls virginity is sometimes referred to as a ‘flower’. Do you REALLY think Marc Jacobs and Marc Jacobs Marketing is that innocent? Where are the Fanning parents that are supposedly so involved? How could they miss this?? I saw this ad in last months Vogue, and I about fell out of my seat. this is unfortunate, but was very intended.

naxia on

To me it suggest a young girl who is a virgin holding onto her flower…I understand art, but this is discusting what they do to young women, just sick. If you don’t agree with me, I don’t care I have 3 girls who I would never allow to be exploited in that way

CELEBS: Do you think this Marc Jacobs Oh, Lola ad is too racy? | A Girl Named Bong…. on

[...] People.com this Dakota Fanning ad is too racy for the UK… I think it’s tongue-and-cheek.. And [...]

ME on

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what the ad is trying to convey: the name of the perfume is a play on “Lolita”, Dakota Fanning is an immediately recognizable face as a girl transitioning into a young woman (although still a minor) and they intentionally placed the large bottle of perfume between – not on – her legs. Just because she doesn’t look like she’s posing for Playboy doesn’t mean they aren’t sexualizing her in the ad. She’s 17 and it’s creepy.

Crystal on

I think Dakota is a very classy young lady. This ad is no where as sexual as some of the ads here in USA. This is not a racy ad….

Dawn on

It is disturbing. If you have ever read Lolita, you would know that “Lola” was a 12 year old girl who was isolated and molested by a man who was obsessed with her. She never gets a voice. One of my favorite books, but disturbing to take that idea of a young girl and translate that into fashion.

M on

Seriously? This is kind of tame compared to her performance in runaways where she’s wearing a garter belt. I can see it IS definitely thought provoking, but I think it’s somewhat mild. Now if she was about 13, then yeah banned for sure. But she’s almost 18. They should’ve had her dress her age. It wouldn’t be as weird.

Katie on

I was really expecting something entirely different when I clicked on this link but no, it’s just a picture. I’m kind of shocked considering this decision came out of Europe. It’s mildly sexually suggestive but so what? I will concede that Dakota Fanning looks childlike naturally anyway, HOWEVER, I think it’s also fairly obvious that she is in no way a child.

Kim on

Normally, I think people are way too sensitive when it comes to this kind of stuff and everyone complains about ridiculous things. However, I actually agree it is too racy. A lot of women call their area a “flower” and when they lose their virginity they were “de-flowered” To have a giant flower coming out from between your legs is definitely too suggestive. She’s young and I guarantee you there are some guys out there getting off on the thought of what this picture suggests.

yvonne on

I wouldn’t let my teenage daughter appear in an ad situated like this. Her dress is hiked up in back, she’s leaning back with this thing right smack between her thighs. It is slightly too sexualized for comfort. They’ve straddled the line because they know better than to have it be too naughty with a girl this age but the intent is there. Anyone who can’t see the thought process behind it is naive. There were a hundred other ways to put her and they chose this one, come on! Use your brains people.

Mara on

have any of you ever been to the UK? Clearly not. The ads over there are much racier than this. She’s nearly 18, which is a lot older than a lot of fashion models out there who show a lot more than this. Just because they aren’t known for being child stars doesn’t mean that they are over 18.

atypical on

this article does bring up a good point though.
we abhor sexual abuse crimes against children, but many ads often look to exploit the youngest possible models and their sexuality.
don’t even get me started on the toddler beauty pagents.
we’re a pretty strange species. . .all things considered.

Dee on

It’s not the way she’s dressed. It’s the position of the bottle. If it were placed in front of her instead of between her legs, they could have gotten away with it. Ultimately, they’re getting what they want anyway, free press for their product. Way to go ad standards authority! Now it’s out there for the world to see as opposed to just the UK! LOL Way to not bring attention to her “sexuality”!

Jennifer on

I don’t like the ad and it is very suggestive and she is a minor. I really don’t think the girl is very attractive or talented either so I guess I just wouldn’t like the ad period. Maybe another actress. She is a bore and over popularized and pretty darn unattractive

TB on

Yes, she is a very beautiful girl, however why couldn’t they put the bottle off to the side or somewhere other than between her legs, that is to me, what makes it too racy.

TEWLUP on

ok. it’s obvious they were going for the whole innocent young girl look and she is holding a FLOWER in her private area AND the perfume is called Oh Lola!… Please, for those of you who don’t get it, think about it. It’s obvious they were trying to be subtle about it but it didn’t work.. move on, she’s 17!.. try something else…

Zinia on

of course it was too racy! they did the right thing…

SRich on

The girl is a minor in a suggestive pose. She has a giant phallic perfume bottle positioned right on her crotch – not around it, not to the side of it, but on it. I know fashion, but this just another example of how the industry cons us to think that this is ok. The clever people at Marc Jacobs knew exactly what they were doing and frankly, it’s unoriginal (see Calvin Klein, 1995)

JB on

atleast they take into mind what might be sexual! if they think it is, then so be it. all they have to do is change the position of the bottle to say, like beside her.

TN on

Too bad the USA doesn’t care like the UK does. I don’t see who the photographers are comfortable taking the pic’s, makes me wonder if the are perv’s.

isis on

I agree that the ad is too suggestive – it’s because the bottle is placed so high at the top of her legs and the flower at the top – what’s that about? Is it because she needs to be ‘de-flowered’? It is definitely sexually suggestive and I’m sure the perfume company knows that. With an older model, it wouldn’t be an issue, but Dakota is only 17 and is too young for this type of ad.

librababe on

it’s admittedly not my kind of art, but whatever. i think it’s just a poor excuse to be “edgy”. it’s boring, uninspiring and corny. next.

Renee on

She normally looks very young. Putting her in a ‘little girl’s dress’ and the position of the bottle is sending the wrong message. She is a MINOR and I think the ad should be pulled. If she were a legal adult, then it’s her decision. This is exploiting a young girl.

R. on

The references to Nabokov’s Lolita are unmistakeable. It is inappropriate.

Laura on

I would call it “suggestive”, not racy.

JDK on

Good for them. I agree completely.

Beenthere on

This IS sexualization of a child. Until she’s an adult (18 in US), that’s what we (society) have deemed the age of consent, so it isn’t right to portray someone in this manner at her age. If you think it is OK, change the age of consent. Is it OK for YOUR child to do? Think about the message it sends to young women & girls, is it the message we want them to have about themselves? Fashion is all about money, not art.

Stacy on

TOOOO RACY!!!! Thank goodness someone is stepping up!!! It is a step from child pornography!

Lynne on

Advertisers leave nothing to chance in their photo ads. Every pose is done deliberately, from the positioning of her dress to the position of the perfume bottle to the positioning of her hands, hair and how she’s sitting. Nothing is left to chance. Advertisers know they have only a few seconds when you’re flipping through a magazine or seeing the ad on a billboard as you drive past. So thus you get a picture that you don’t realize is sending your brain a “subliminal message” about the product, but it is. This photo does not have to be “sexually explicit” in order to the message across about the product…

chris on

She’s practically an adult. Its okay for her to do adult like things on screen bc she’s an actress, but when she is acting in an advertisement, its not ok?

Its ok for 13 year olds from ford agency to be practically naked in sheer stuff on the runway in adult clothing, but a 17 year old holding a bottle between her legs is too much?

Betty Finn on

While I understand the age concern, I feel like this would only be seen as sexually suggestive to perverts and pedophiles.

maryj on

I do not see anything wrong with this ad.

JG on

It’s not too explicit at all. Her dress length is appropriate for today’s up and coming youth! It’s not like she has her rear hanging out and the clevege is not too low cut either. So what the perfume is sitting on her lap? She is a beautiful classy young lady and people who are critizing this should really critize more important issues…

Katrina on

Gosh how dirty minded could they be? My mind didnt even went there when I saw the ad! English. So uptight!

Luanna on

Who is this marketing to? Can you imagine walking up to a counter and trying to describe what perfume you’re looking for based on this ad if you couldn’t remember the name? I’d like a bottle of the perfume named after a molested child that was showed as a teenager’s flower please. Trying to figure out how not to be crude, but this immediately makes me think the perfume would smell like a female hygene product.

Serena on

I feel there is nothing wrong with this ad. Dakota is a very classy girl and if you take this ad as being sexual then I think it may be you that has the problem, not the ad.

Melissa on

I think its cute

leilarx on

It’s not that it’s racy, it’s that it IS suggestive. A flower is often used to symbolize women’s genitals. Dakota is underage still and is dressed to look even more childish/innocent. Her face has an innocent girly look to it too. And the term “Lola”, specifically “Lolita” is used by pedophiles to refer to young girls. If you don’t know that consciously, many people would perceive it as such, especially pedophiles. And the symbolism of the flower, the girly look/pose and the term “Lola” I can bet is not lost on the designers of this ad or people at Marc Jacobs.

SALLY on

Yes it is too racy. If the bottle was beside her then it would be different, but the perfume is between her legs (ie fallic undertones).

Andre on

I think its great!!!!!

Leisa on

Yes. It is too racy and too suggestive. Young girl…older gal……either way she’s dressed innocently with a flower between her legs. Give me a break. How does it not say “take my flower (virginity)”. I don’t see why everything has to be about sex is beyond me.

Smangele on

I find it the comments saying they can’t see *how* this could be racy and that it looks innocent – completely bizarre. It is not accidental in any way, that the perfume ad uses a very young girl (Dakota), the perfume is placed as it is (resting in her crotch) and that the perfume is called Lola (short for Lolita). It is overtly sexual – but high end fashion, perfume and make-up ads are typically sexual. But this one is not *just* using a young model (common), and is not just sexual (also common) – it combines all together youth + sex. The company would certainly not have wanted to wait till she was older or used a different model. The effect they wanted to achieve was portrayed exactly as they intended.

tootie on

Where are her parents in the decision making?????

JJ on

I support their decision. Though I personally don’t find the photo “racy”, I do think it is suggestive, and because she is a minor they must be extremely cautious. If she was 18 I don’t think they would have had a problem, but in this scenario it is best to err on the side of caution.

tazbabe07 on

After having raised three children of which two are girls this ad is nothing in the way of suggestive. Dakota’s body is covered in an appropriate way. And where else would you put a big bottle like that???!!!!

Dianne on

Yes, it is and Kim probably doesn’t think it is racy……….because she can’t even spell ad right! It’s suggestive and was meant to be………it’s not pretty or cute! It is trying to depict sex no matter how you look at it.

tamra on

I’m happy to see that they are protecting Dakota’ honor… she is a very classy young lady, looks like the Uk wants to keep her that way. the ubited states would have her naked with the bottle between her legs. Protect our Children..

Claire on

When I first saw it a while back I thought , the bottle is on her who ha. Belongs in Playboy. Good for Britain and shame on Dekota for allowing people who knew better for putting her in this position. Sad that Dekota doesn’t have an agent who cares about how she is portrayed.

Houghtons Human on

I agree that the ad is selling a child as a sex object….perfume, right.

raven on

not at all. i see girls on the street dressed much more provocatively than dakota in this add. much fuss over nothing.

anamaria on

She looks lovely its ridicoulos to ban it from showing.
why dont you do your homework properly and ban the rubbish you allow to be on air, on the magazines, etc.
a young pretty lady come out and you found it suggestive what about the number of boobs bumps you allow. drug addicts you have by the thousands and performing in the UK all the time and which is worse “venerated”

Brad on

The name of the perfume is Oh, Lola! Lola being short for Lolita. Couple the name of the perfume with the image presented and you have a company trying to use a teen’s sexuality to sell cheap perfume. The U.K.’s Ad Standard Bureau was correct in pulling this ad. Apparently there are intelligent people working for the Ad Bureau and saw right through the Nabokov imagery.

Amodis on

I can see how a pervert could construe this as like child pornography. Frankly, given the name Lola, it – as well as her look, evoke Lolita…. Clearly on purpose. While Dakota is not showing too much skin, and indeed looks pretty, her youth and the position of the bottle are provocative to a pervert’s mind. It’s sad that the rest of us have to worry about people out there who prey on kids, but it is an issue.

Susan on

Seriously?? Of all the Ads out there with teenage girls in Bikinis, mini-skirts, and in tiny little short-shorts an people find this offensive? I think some people have way too much time on their hands. Why don’t we get this upset with all the bullying going on, the hate crimes an all the young people commiting suicide….

bea on

Looks like the typical perfume ad to me. Of course one can argue that she just so happens to be “resting” the bottle on her legs but it was obviously strategically placed between her legs with the “come hither” expression. Same old same old.

Splum on

They’re nuts. That’s a pretty tame ad by today’s standards.

Lili on

Don’t see a problem with this at all!

CABL on

What bella said, it’s ridiculous to know that the immediate jump to that was sex…some people.

Guest on

I’m not seeing that at all. The bottle is resting on her legs, not in between. Idiots!!

kaye d on

hmmm…I can see they “flower” reference immediately. The vase “between” her legs, vs. resting “on” her thigh….yeah. It’s def a sexual message. For them to say it’s not, they’re full of ________. It is what it is, but the UK guidelines are far most stringent than here in the US. So, yes, it’s provacative by their standards. Let’s all move on.

aliyahrg on

I think it’s a little suggestive for a 17 year old. It brings to mind “deflowering” her, as a sign of her virginity.

kaye d on

“THE”, not “they”. Typo.

e on

I thought the ruling was nuts when I first read this, but upon reflection, I applaud the decision to be conservative when dealing with a minor. Had it been a woman over 18, fine … it’s not that racy. No harm in being extra cautious with those under 18.

Elizabeth Hertlein on

I agree no one says anything about half naked posters in in time square so please move on with your life besides it smells as good as this poster looks amazing

J Scott on

The perfume is called “Oh Lola” and it is held between her legs , she is only 17- a child and that is NOT appropriate.

tvlnana on

It’s for a commercial and I get that, but she is also exactly the same age as my granddaughter and looking at it in that respect I wouldn’t approve. So i guess “color me old fashioned”…I would prefer a more innocent ad campaign.

Marcia Tracy on

Not racy at all. They won’t allow that, but Calvin Klien (with half naked models)ads can be run? REALLY??!?!

Tatajana on

I think were over using racy. I don’t see anything wrong unless your mind is living in gutter.

JenLaw on

It is sexualizing children and it’s wrong. Dress her as a woman and put the bottle elsewhere, and we’re all good. Otherwise it borders on kiddy porn.

Julie Vickrey on

I see no problem with this pic.

huh? on

hmmm well who is the one with a dirty mind…I bet that half the people who have seen it wouldn’t have even thought of that….

Candice on

I think the picture is beautiful, but I can see how it would be perceived as provocative. Maybe if they just changed where they have the bottle of perfume it wouldn’t be so bad.

rosa on

i think those looking at the pic in a perv way are just out of line… her facial expression is inocent looking and she happens to have the bottle between her legs now if she were dressd diff and spread eagle i would say racy wth i looked at pic and couldnt figure out what they were talking about racy till i read on.. that goes to show how i was thinking..

maggz on

Anyone remember that pic of Miley Cyrus with just a sheet? THAT was racy. This is nothing compared to that.

NYC guest on

I am no fan of Dakota Fanning, but I sill don’t think this ad needs to be pulled. Yes, it is VERY suggestive (a “flower” by her “flower”) and will probably immediately make people think of that, but 1) there are plenty of other ads WAY more racy than this one, and 2) is she even a child? isn’t she in college already? If she were underage, then maybe they’d have an argument.

Achmedspud on

What is racy about it ? It looks completely innocent to me.

Taunya Curry on

I don’t think too much is wrong with this.

Gabriela on

This is racy??? Wow, what about that new Carl’s JR commercial with half-naked women basically having sex with their burgers!?!

Emvee on

So have you people who think this is too ‘racy’ ever seen any other Marc Jacobs perfume ads? If you have, you would know that his ad campaigns are known for being like this and that there are much more provocative ads than this one. Sure she’s 17, sure she’s holding the bottle in her lap, but please tell me why an ad is such a problem, but her acting in a movie where she’s doing drugs, having sex, being molested etc isn’t a problem?!?! It’s 2011 people, this is NOT child porn, she is not being sexualized, its an effing perfume ad. Get over it!

Achmedspud on

This is not at all racy, some people just have filthy minds :(

marie on

I’d say the ad to me is considered “provocative” but that’s what sells. The fact that she is only seventeen does deem her as a child. If the model were over eighteen, then it would make all the difference in the world. That’s my opinion.

Crystal on

This is absolutely rediculous. The only way this photo can be seen as offensive and suggestive is if it is through the eyes of someone seeking to see a sexualized image. She is covered and holding a flowered bottle in her lap! Whoever see’s something different has a disturbed view on the image in this picture.

Tod on

I would never have glanced at the ad if not for the news story. I also would not have thought of it as anything more than an advertisement for something. Now that the story has drawn my attention to “the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle”, I’m feeling just a little bit aroused.

KAT on

OMG!! Are you serious??!! How ridiculous is that! I do not understand why people want to create sexuality when there is none. She looks like a young innocent girl holding a perfume bottle. Quit making a bigger deal than it needs to be. Good grief.

Carol on

Go to college little miss seductive. You need a break and so do we.

Karen on

I do not see the picture as raunchy! To me it’s a girl in a pink dress hold a vase. It’s not like she has her dress hiked up with the vase between her legs and licking her lips! Now that would be raunchy for her age! Get a grip people!

AJ on

Inappropriate due to bottle placement. Her crotch – or any hint of it – should not be the focal point of the ad. Think about it…someone told her precisely where to put that bottle, to hold it next to her pubis. That isn’t right. She’s a minor. Our allowance of, and ambivalence to, the sexualizing of minor girls is part of what’s wrong in this country.

Bay on

It is only dirty because people now a days only think about things in a perverted way. It is these people who are ruining art today. Not everything is sexual and society needs to stop trying to ruin things because they think it is too “racy”.

Katie on

I see nothing wrong with the ad she looks very clasy

catca on

The ad was an obvious attempt to make Oh Lola! Oh Lolita! The issue is that it does make her look like a little girl and she is a minor. It’s glamourizing pedophilia. I don’t think the fact that it’s a high fashion ad makes that okay. Fashion can and sometimes does, cross the line. If it were an adult woman dressed like a sexy adult woman, you wouldn’t have the Lolita thing going and I think the ad would be fine, while still provoking.

megan on

Wow. This ad is provocative. Many people today are desensitized to this sort of thing. There are no mistakes in planning a pose in a photo shoot. The position of the FLOWER in the perfume bottle (called LOLA) resting BETWEEN HER LEGS suggests “deflowering.” It is naive to think otherwise. People need to stop and think about what the media does and how it affects us and our children. This may seem like no big deal, but when you combine this with the onslaught of other ads and images out there that are disrespectful to women/children then it becomes another piece of a bad puzzle. Let’s clean it up already!

Maria del Mar on

I don’t think it’s racy at all. She looks super cute and sweet. I don’t see anything wrong

Kari on

Has anyone seen the movie “runaways” she does drugs, dress way racier than this and has sex. This is nothing compared to this.. she is a great actress and i think she looks great in this pic.

Jessica Rami on

Okay… so she can be in a movie kissing another “girl” and that’s allowed, but having a bottle of perfume somewhat suggestively at her legs is deemed inappropriate? I’m all for not sexualizing our children, but if this is too inappropriate then 99% of the stuff on television and in movies should be banned as well.

Ani C. on

There is a big red flower in her lap… and they don’t see a problem with that? Why don’t they just say come “pop my cherry”
We have such a big problem with young children being abused and these cosmetic companies are sexifying images of children… there is definitely something wrong with that.

Rodrick on

For Realz I don’t think it’s close to Rasy. think its a very well down photograph :)

marie on

Do you know what “Lola” implies? If not, research the meaning and you will get an idea what the hoopla is all about. Racy – yes… very provocative? YES! Innocence – yes and no….

Mel on

Sorry this is way over the top. It’s not classy at all. It’s obviously prurient in its intent.

Jay on

The dress length is fine… not too thrilled about the positioning of the bottle… thats a little bit toooo suggestive.

elle on

Very suggestive..in this warped society that we live in we don’t need to encourage these of ads and then wonder why celebrities are stalked! I have two daughters and I certainly wouldn’t be happy with this. What’s wrong with a nice, friendly ad? Why the the need for sexual innuendos? Is that what it takes to sell a product? Its even difficult to figure what product Dakota is selling? The vase, flower, the dress..who knows!

rachel on

Maybe the bottle could be in a different place but its not a bad ad. i like her dress.

Donna on

Yea, sweet and classy, especially with the bottle between her legs.

ALINE on

I DONT SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE AD..IF ANYONE THINKS THE IS RACY ..YOU NEED TO GET YOUR EYES CHECKED …

Karen on

Amen, Jessica R and Kari! I thought it was a vase! LOL!

Alana on

no think it okay

nthing on

“Nothing wrong with this ad” huh? Ok, there’s nothing racy about it, EXCEPT for the big engorged vagina popping out of a minor’s mini skirt. This isn’t an ad of a girl holding a bottle of perfume. This is a perfume ad using suggestive sexual innuendos to sell a product. I work in the advertising world. We will find anyway to add sex to sell. Its what we do.

Summerbr3ze on

Well…considering most people refer to a young woman’s genitals as her flower, and she has this huge pointed perfume bottle with a, you guessed it, flower on it, sitting between her thighs similar to a phalice…um…i can see how some would be offended. just saying.

Texas Flower on

The bottle is resting on her lap, not in between her legs. Great picture, great smelling perfume too!

sern73 on

Yes, I do think it’s too racy. I think we need to be more mindfull of what the media puts out there. It has more of an influence on feelings and behavior than most people realize.

Boston on

While I don’t necessarily take offense to this ad, I can see how it can be looked at as trying to sexualize a child. Dakota Fanning is still considered a minor because she is 17, she is dressed very young, with a bottle between her legs with a very large flower on it. Yes, there is certainly a message here and it is not just about smelling pretty.

sarah on

Only if you are a dirty grubby person will you see this as something dirty. Get your minds out of the gutter and see it for what it is. The whole world is just a filthy sex crazed thing. It’s rediculous.

Susan Lee on

Racy is not the problem. Pedophilia enticing is. Use a mature woman and it’s just fine. The profound negative effects of sexualizing girls is a topic that cannot be covered in a little comment post. Suffice it to say that this is a classic example.

Samantha on

I really don’t see what’s racy about this picture. She’s 17, not 12 and I think it looks age appropriate. Maybe people just aren’t used to the fact that she is growing up.

Pat Munoz on

Its very obvious what they were trying to suggest. Seriously, if you need sexual innuendos to sell your perfume, it must NOT be smelling like roses. I’m just saying.

april on

that ad def isnt too racy! if they think it is, maybe they should check out her roll in The Runaways (awesome movie btw)

Gwen on

She is an adult now, good for her.

J Mett on

It is sad that the standard of what’s considered decent is lowered all the time. The more you are exposed to controversial issues, the easier it is to accept it as the norm. Where does the line get drawn? She looks 12 in this ad, no matter what her real age, so what message are you sending out to our tweenies? Who are they targeting here? Teens and molesters in my view! It does not inspire me to buy it. To be honest received some as a gift, but gave it away as the smell was cloying – more for an older woman, who they are definitely not targetting in this ad!

crystal on

Yes,it is to racey for someone her age,my problem is that the advertising business thinks everything has to be sexualized to sell…well,i know that my daughter at 14 would need me to purchase the perfume for her,and due to this ad i wouldn’t even look at it!Sorry, but this girl is just beautiful and could see the product without being exploited!

jaysea on

men go off to war at 18. She’s an adult. It’s not dirty…..unless u have a dirty mind!

Laurel on

yea, its completely suggestive which isn’t new for this kind of campaign however, she looks like she is 12! i agree with the ban.

Seanaci on

Racy? NO. Suggestive? Yes.

Be honest with yourselves people…when you read/flip through a magazine, you don’t look at the perfume/clothes/make-up/shoe/purse/et al ads long enough to even get the IDEA in your head that the ad is racy or even suggestive. I believe most people who find this racy looked at this ad far longer than you would give it a look in a magazine. I pretty much skip right past all ads in a magazine…unless there is something in it that catches my eye, then I’ll look closer to see what the ad is for.

But, as others have said, the only people seeing this as racy live with their minds in the gutters.

judy on

OMG people !!!! Come on give me a break!!! She is precious!!!Always has been and always will be!!! You people are too uptight and very insecure about your own sexuality!!!

Okay, Its true “Sex” sells, the ad definitely caught your attention the way it was intended! It’s amazing how much controversy it has caused! There will be one’s who don’t think there is nothing wrong with the ad, but they haven’t a clue as to what LOLA implies. The model is gorgeous, but too young for this ad (my opinion).

No more racy than the young Brook Shields for Calvin Klein was back in the day.

It all depends upon perspective.

To others – no

To me? I just don’t care

Jenny on

The ad is too provocative for a child. I did study advertising & communication in college.
1. The placement of the bottle between her legs is cleary a phallic symbol.
2. The Flower at the top of the bottle can be seen as her virginity being “deflowered”.
3. The ad is sweet on its surface which is why it is deceptive.

marie on

don’t stop there…you might as well include 16, 15, 14, 12 years of age etc…. Bottom line is the “model” is too young for the ad period – if she were of legal age then it would be different.

Really people, I dont find this ad suggestive or provocative, until it was pointed out in this article I didnt notice that the bottle was positioned there. If I saw this ad in vogue or people, I wouldnt consider it inappropriate at all.

Rachel on

What I’m more concerned about is the fact that they made a 17-year-old pose with perfume called ‘Oh! Lola.’

:-| Humbert Humbert would be all over this if he were real (and maybe if Dakota were younger?)

Seriously!!! She is in a cute pink polka dotted dress, sittin on the floor with her arm holding her up. The bottle of perfume is resting on her legs, her make up & her hair is done nice. Whoever is thinking naughty thoughts bout this pic has a serious perv problem. People need to get your minds out of the gutter. Dakota isn’t a naughty girl, plus is 17 not 7. There are girls her age doing way worse things.

Funny how the UK has nude people on tv, like the on BBC or in print so-called Newspapers. But this Fannie add is to racy. I guess it’s just England. They don’t want to exploit minors, but if she was 18 or older sexpoliation is FINE! Dakota Fanning will always be remembered for being an anoying twit in lots of sub-par films! As she gets older and tries to changer her image. She’s doing her self a diservice trying to be a sex-pot. Look at poor Anne Hathway? They end up doing t’n'a roles. Nobody cares about them expect 4 their looks! Dakota is better than THAT! She needs to grow up and love herself! Not MONEY $!

Britain’s a little uptight it seems..lol. She’s 17, not 13. She’s also been in movies that were much more suggestive than they claim this ad is (which it’s not in the least). If she and her parents don’t have a problem with her doing the ad and there isn’t inappropriate clothing or showing of skin, what’s the big deal? I don’t see anything in this photo that could even remotely be considered “pushing the limits” compared to all the other ads out there.

I think the most offensive part about this is that this child is posing for an ad that is titled “The new fragrance for WOMEN”…
…talk about causing body issues and the pressure to look young!!!

Liz on

Anyone who thinks that’s racy is a pervert themselves. When I saw the photograph, I thought it was adorable. However, when I read the article, I saw what people where saying about it. You have to have a dirty mind to think of things that way in the first place. 17 year old girls are NOT CHILDREN. They are young women who are, yes, probably having sex or at least considering sexual thoughts. I’m 18 and I would not be ashamed to dress like that or to appear in a photograph like that. I’ve seen 16 year old girls look far more provocative on Facebook. People need to realize the artistic vision behind the composition rather than thinking about it in a negative light. GET YOUR MINDS OUT OF THE GUTTER!

Jacqui on

Racy No, Suggestive yes.

stephanie on

Yes it IS racy. She is made to look “younger”, the name Lola is a nickname for Lolita which is the movie about a little girl’s inappropriate relationship with a MUCH older MAN, the facial expression, and the perfume between her legs suggests “deflowering”. How can you NOT see that?! When are we going to stop “sexualizing” young girls, or all women for that matter? It’s not healthy emotionally, mentally, or physically. If you want to rationalize, ignore, or defend things like this then you only have yourself to blame for the consequences you invite in your life and in our world. If there is even a small voice inside that says something is not right, listen to it and demand a change in media, etc.

She is dressed to look like a child. I don’t believe they seriously thought this wasn’t infantilization. Sick people perpetuating these messages, it’s not difficult to be present a classy, sexy adult woman and make that appeal to the viewers. They shouldn’t feel the need to stoop so low as sexualizing children to sell perfume. Just reflects the values of our society.

Lena on

I really fail to see the sexuality in this picture.

Kamcy on

Move the bottle and inch closer to her knees and no problem or hold the bottle straight up instead of on a slant. Innuendo is a powerful thing… even if unintentional.

Emma on

there is nothing wrong here. she’s showing some thigh with a perfume bottle, what’s the big deal? she has her head on right, unlike some of the other famous girls her age.

Ali on

It IS kind of suggestive for an underage girl. The flower between her legs? Eeeek. Don’t need to read between the lines to know what they are implying. It’s a little provactive for her considering the age. Wouldn’t be quite an issue if she were over 18 though.

Crystal on

Say what you wnt about it, this Ad definitely promots pedophilia. It’s no accident that a “blossoming flower” is resting between her legs.

Mela on

Yes, it’s too racy. I’m glad the ad was pulled. How about we let kids be kids? The perfume is resting on her crotch. Had they moved it over a few inches the ad would be fine.

The US needs a simliar watchdog. Too many kids and teens being made up to look sexy. Why not leave that to actual adults?

L on

You can all pretend it’s not, but this add is racy. She has a childs’ polka dot dress on with a suggestive look on her face. And the giant bottle of perfume is strategically placed between her legs…

Tessa on

For crying out loud! The girl is fully dressed. Most of these magazine ads show skin, barely cover private parts. That is ridiculous. This is tasteful and it really takes imagination to make this into a “racy” ad! Good grief.

Nessiria on

People are WAY too PC and overly sensitive these days. Plus, if the ppl at banning feel that way, it probably means they themselves are perverts and pedophiles… because as a normal person, I certainly wouldn’t read that much in this ad.

miesha on

What is the idea of to racy? What of the AD(just above the comment box) I am looking at of a 14 year old in an Burberry eyeglass ad looking as if she is 25! Go figure, if were an ad for mens Calogne, all would find it aceptable!!!!!!

Jessica on

once again people over-react. i see nothing wrong with the ad. I have had drinks between my legs before and trust me I wasn’t trying to be provactive. And frankly I’ve seen teenagers wearing stuff shorter than that. It’s not showing that much of her leg. Bathing suits show more than that. God people need to calm down.

Edie on

PEOPLE…get a grip! This ad is very suggestive and inappropriate. Why are we sexualizing these young women?? Is that all we women are worth? I’m not at all a prude, but you KNOW what this is alluding to and PLEEEEZE don’t try to deny it.

Lea on

While I have of course seen worse, I still find it absolutely ridiculous that people on here are arguing that the placement of the bottle is an innocent coincidence. Let’s keep it real people –it’s no mistake that Dakota was asked to place the flower bottle BETWEEN her legs. Advertising execs meticulously plan out even the minutest of details contained in ads. The suggestiveness of bottle is obviously meant to contrast her otherwise conservative, “good girl” attire.

littlerosa on

Compare this picture to those raunchy pictures of Miley Cyrus that came out a couple years ago, and Miley was younger than 17 at the time. This picture of Dakota is NOT too racy.

ok, really? i had to read the comments to really find out what the UK thought was so horrible to BAN this photo. it’s fashion and is 17 really that more “mature” for 18? besides, most american girls lose their “flower” way before 17 these days anyway … grow up america!

Carole on

Not impressed. She’s too young and if she’s not being “sexualized,” then why is the perfume placed strategically BETWEEN her legs?!

Keli on

The outfit is adorable and as far as the placement of the bottle, I don’t think the average reader is going to pick that out speeding through pages of ads. I think they’d say “Hey, there’s Dakota Fanning in a cute dress selling perfume. Next page…” There are a lot worse things I am worried about my children seeing than that.

Elizabeth on

I don’t think it is to racy.. It’s all in the eyes of the beholder. It’s only racy if that’s the frame of mind you have and you think that way.. They are worried about this pick because of it being racy… She’s been in movies that are a heck of a lot more racy.. exp…The Runaways.. They didn’t pull the movie because she was under age playing a racy roll so why pull a pic? Crazy is my opinion…

itznia on

I would not let my gorgeous 17 year old daughter do that paticular pose – they could of chosen something with a little more taste.

Eliza on

The flower symbolizes her virginity people! It’s inappropriate.

Sarah on

One thing we all know about photography shoots: Everything is placed where it is for a reason. She has a perfume bottle between her legs because the director instructed her to, and there’s no doubt that his purpose was to sexualize the ad. Plus, the fact that she’s a minor and, even more so, that they’re highlighting her youth with her pretty pink polka-dot dress just makes it downright creepy. I can definitely see why they pulled it.

Christine VanHout on

I have seen racier and alot less on Toddlers and Tiaras. This photo seems just fine to me.

It’s a suggestive photo for sure but not indecent.

We know Dakota is 17. What we don’t know is how many of the female models are ages 14-18 who are made up to look like 20-something sirens in super provacative poses. There are many teenaged models photographed in much more provocative wear and positions without so much as a peep from the thoughtpolice.

With this precedent, I suppose now we have to look at the age of EVERY model before we publish their photos, right?

CJ on

racy? i’ve seen worse. what i find distracting about the picture are the shadows in the background. LOL

Nothing about the ad is done without an incredible amount of forethought and strategy. Of course, it is a phallic symbol between her legs and it is no coincidence that the bottle is topped with a flower that suggests female private parts and virginity. I saw the ad before I heard the news and wondered how they could get away with it.

Noelle L. on

there is nothing wrong with this add at all. yea, the perfume is resting on her leg…. so what. It’s just a perfume bottle. her outfit is modest and under the dress she is wearing tights so we cannot see her legs. Harley on

While yes, I get the nature of the photo; that’s a total double standard. We have 14 and 15 year olds skimping across magazines in tiny a** bikinis and undies (lets face it, bikinis are basically undies – so there’s no difference in my book).

Too racy? The advertisements that Daisy Lowe did for Marc Jacobs were ten times racier than Dakota’s!

layla on

Carri on

It is “too racy” because the bottle is resting inbetween her legs and is next to her “lady pieces”.

Luke on

I’m sorry, but this ad is over the top. A “flower” in between her legs? Really? She’s 17! They were trying to be suggestive for sure. Trying to say Dakota hasn’t been deflowered yet. She’s just too young for an ad like this.

RoguePixie on

I think there is something wrong with the censors if they look at that ad and immediately think of something sexual. She is wearing a tasteful party dress and holding a bottle of perfume. If you see anything other than that, then perhaps you might want to reconsider your own views of child sexualization. Those who are inclined to see something perverse of lascivious will always think things are sexual. Grow up. I’ll be those are the same people who can’t say “chicken breast” without giggling like idiots.

Donna on

Of all the ways this “young” girl could be holding the bottle of perfume, this was intentional. Where are this girl’s parents during these photo shoots? Are they so hard up for money that they allow their young daughter to do whatever some pervert photographer and PR person want her to do? Shame on them. And shame on all of you that think this is OK. It wouldn’t be OK if it was 30 year old model in the picture let alone this young girl!

lucy on

I don’t think the ad would be suggestive if it were not for the bottle placement. If the bottle didn’t have the flower, it would be fine where it’s placed. But since Dakota is young, the flower does suggest some things. I don’t mind it, but I see where some people are coming from.

Real Adult on

Her body is appropriately covered, there is no sexual component in the ad and the bottle looks more like a flower vase than a perdfume bottle.
Do some people really see this as a sexual ad?
God makes seventeen-year-olds look this way, not people.
She looks great and only prudes see sex where there is no hint of sex.
Grow up people!

Fashion people and their ad people/photographers consistently try to see what boundaries they can cross. I am totally impressed that someone stood up and put their foot down.

Mel on

Jennifer on

Yep, it is. And if there is ever a question, you don’t run it. Anything that could promote something that could be negative for a child, shouldn’t be questioned twice. Way to go U.K.!!

You can do better on

Dakota – you’re a great actress and I’ve enjoyed watching you grow up on the screen… but.. I have to agree that this photo is a bit racy for a 17-year old – no matter how mature you are personally. I think a more ‘flirty’ rather than ‘dirty’ pic would be better.

Cheryln on

How is this racy? There are so many more ads that are way too racy…this doesn’t seem racy to me at all.

Helena on

Jeez, from the title I thought she was posing nude or something. I really don’t see anything wrong with this.

Anna on

The flower is symbolic of the vagina, loss of virginity and sexual blossoming. The fact that the perfume bottle is right in her crotch suggests a first sexual experience. Dakota is still a minor regardless of the maturity level of the movies she has chosen to work in during her life so far. But the truth is that there are pedophiles out there, and it is irresponsible to create ads that sexualize young girls in this way. It has nothing to do with Dakota Fanning herself and her personal choices as much as it has to do with the perversions that exist in society already and how this ad capitalizes off of it. It is definitely in bad taste; clearly they would have known the symbolism of the flower. The perfume is called “Lola” for heaven’s sakes, which is also about the sexualization of a young girl.

Nicole on

Thank goodness there are some countries that still show some kind of morality towards the exploitation of their youths. Maybe the US could take some pointers. Those of you who think this is not provocative for a teenager are probably ok with all of the sex and violence that is shown on tv as well….

carly on

that is absolutely rediculious… there is nothing wrong with this ad, and Dakota looks stunning as always

Jae on

It’s definitely too racy, the innuendo of a flower between a young girl’s legs is obvious enough, but the connection of the name of the perfume also rang a bell. Perhaps I’m reading far too much into this, but the name Lola and the image of a young sexualized girl reminds me of Lolita, the story of a man lusting over a preteenaged girl. Come on now, this is not art. Put the flower somewhere else.

Lily on

Ad was intentionally racy…get more attention for being sexual and the fact Dakota is under 18…sorta like those sexually tinged ads Brooke shields did years ago that got attention and helped sell its product. Dakota takes on a slightly Lolita look with a bottle of perfume between her legs at her crotch. Not sexually provative…intentionally sexually provative.

Rousquilles on

It isn’t so much the pictures, but the name.
It is clearly a reference to Lolita by Nabokov.
Besides Lolita Humbert calls her Lo and Lola; so coupled with the picture, it is pretty clear what he is getting at…

Carrie on

Seriously, too racy? Are we looking at the same ad? The girl is covered up at least. It’s an innocent ad. It’s all in your own individual perception. I think the ad is fine.

tamoya on

i really don’t see anything wrong with this pic i don’t see a child looking to sexy she hardly has any make up on that would seem over the top,

hobieluv83 on

But 17 is the age of consent in England so it technically doesn’t promote child sexuality.

Sarah on

The reason the ad is “racy” isn’t just because she is wearing a short dress. It’s because she looks like a child and is advertising for a perfume called “Lola” that has a flowered bottle topper. The ad is playing off the story of “Lolita” – the story of a child who was “deflowered” a/k/a sexually molested and abused. That’s why the ad was banned.

jaydon on

Cuddos for pulling the provacative ad. Gimme a break Dakota try a little longer being a young girl. That ad reeks of sexuality and not innocence at all.You will be a woman soon enough.

ColumbiaQT on

I don’t see anything wrong with this ad. I actually saw it a couple of months ago and almost didn’t recognize DF because she looks soo young.. I think people are reading too much into the pose. It’s hardly racy, let alone too sexy.. SMH Get a life. Always complaining about stuff. Fix something for a change..

LM on

Anyone who is familiar with Lolita knows what this ad is about, and I’m sure the creative minds behind this campaign knew too. The ad isn’t racy in the sense that she shows too much skin or is too adult looking. But it is very suggestive by the bottle placement coupled with the name of the perfume.

loo on

its not a nice picture anyway, IMO she is such a beauitful young lady. this piture does nothing for her

Ashley on

For crying out loud it’s not like she’s turned towards the camera with her legs in the air letting all her girly parts hang out for everyone to see! It’s a classy ad featuring a beautiful young lady. People need to get real.

Rebecca on

I think the ad is beautiful. There is nothing racy about this ad. I mean her kissing another girl in the movie “The Runaways” is more racy than this ad is. Come on.

CG on

Uh, it is provocative. It is just implied. Not only is the bottle positioned at her genital area, she is leaning on a invisible, bed-like surrounding–in a manner as though she is on a bed. . . Moreover, she has a “come hither” expression on her face. This is all quite obvious–if not symbolic of sexuality (metaphorical of it as well). I will not even go into what the perfume bottle can symbolize. . . And, with that huge flower on top of it. . . And, how the dress is just slightly raised at her thigh. . . Uh, the posing is rather strategic. . . Plus, there’s pink as the ultimate, romantic color–among other things that it can symbolize. . .

LaKeesha Wherry on

The dress is ok…she has on stockings….but, I would not have positioned the bottle between her legs…maybe under her arm or on her side.

Rachel on

Duh!!! She’s dressed as a child, exemplifying her purity, but with a huge bottle of flowers on her crotch. Hasn’t anyone heard the saying “being deflowered?!” It’s clearly portraying a child, dangling her virginity!

Caroline on

I’m glad to see that there are intelligent people in UK. Good Job.

Deneen on

She still looks like she is 12. Other than money, why would she pose like that and why would her parents let her? Stuff like this is why perverts prevail.

Paula on

I think the pose and the position of the bottle is absolutely inappropriate and uncalled for due to the age of Dakota. I am amazed that her parents would allow the use of this picture in any ad campaign. I guess money talks no matter what the actress has to do to get it.

Marylou on

why don’t they just title it “deflower me”

Stephanie on

Definitely inappropriate. Good for the UK! It’s so sad that so many of these young Hollywood stars start out so sweet and then almost invariably end up being sexualized at a very young age. They almost invariably do some racy, pornographic thing. I don’t think THIS photo is necessarily pornographic, but it’s definitely inappropriate, definitely highly suggestive, and I do fear that it’s just the beginning of a long sexual path for Miss Dakota. It’s tragic, really, what Hollywood does to our Youth.

getting a teenager, making her look younger, getting a flower shaped bottle between her legs.. you dont have too read between the lines (or legs) too much to see what this actually insinuates.

dont be fooled, the creative directors knew what they were doing in order to get a little attention.

Alicia on

It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. Either they make her look older so it doesn’t look “racy”, and get blasted for making her look too “grown up” or they leave her natural beauty be, and it’s “sexual-izing children.” And, for Christ’s sake, she plays a sadistic vampire in the Twilight series… At least this looks classy.

Name on

#1 – She is dressed like a child who’s skirt is way too short. She looks a lot younger than her years as well.

#2 – The bottle is placed in an area near her private part, like she is holding a dildo and masterbating with it. This is what they are taking issue with the most.

#3 – They could have positioned her AND the bottle better, but they chose not to, therefore creating a racy ad which puts her in a sexually provocative position.

#4 – Sex sells, but it looks like the U.K.’s moral values are radically different from the USA’s in this matter. Good!

Nina on

You’re blind or morally bankrupt if you can’t see what’s wrong with the way she’s posing. This ad isn’t selling perfume…

i think the flower on her “lap” is supposed to represent her innocence just a thought…

Annie Reilly on

I don’t think it’s inappropriate at all, I see where it could be taken that way of course but given the playfulness of the colors of pink and the youngness of her dress I wouldn’t take it like that at all. If she were in a short black dress with a red background then I would think oh my this is sexy. But not for this.

On what planet is a 17 year veteran actress a child?

ls on

Personally, I find the “concept” behind the fragrance more offensive than the picture. While “Lolita” was in many ways an important story, there is no way that as aspect of the human story should be celbrated. I hate seeing child molestation being used to sell perfume.

T Wheeler on

The ad is extremely in poor taste. Just because a person doesn’t say it in words, you say it in with the picture. This ad says, especially to a pervert, Deflower the youth (that is why the bottle, with the top made of flowers is sitting in her crotch). Just like a kid wouldn’t take it that far, it is an adult who should have the sensibility to know that is what can be inferred . Like it or not people morals aren’t that high that is why watchdog organizations exits.

Sheba on

I don’t particularly like the position of the perfume bottle. I’ve seen ads that are a whole lot more provocative, so not sure why this one is getting all this attention. Overall, even without the bottle in this position, I don’t like the ad. It seems boring both with the colors and with her facial expression.

Edward on

She is 17 years old. That means that she is legally old enough to have sex and get married (With her parents’ permission) in this country. This ruling in my opinion is ridiculous. I think people who think this is “sexualised” says more about them than the picture.

Kara on

Sure it’s a little racy but more importantly, where can I find that pink dress??

Tandy on

I think the ad looks dumb anyway. It’s not a good picture of Dakota at all and it looks like an amateur took the photo, not professional quality to me.

xerxia on

You know, she’s 17, it’s not really a racy picture, and yet there’s something disconcerting about it. I don’t think there’s any doubt that it was meant to be sexually charged – even the perfume name conjures images of Lolita.

Kelly on

All this controversy is going to do is make people want the perfume that much more. I don’t see anything wrong with this picture but perverts out there can take a picture of anything and make it sexual.

What I find really offensive is that the bottle does not represent the actual product size. But that probably would have disappeared in the photo. Bad business folks!

Bunnie Watson on

Not sure if others have noted two things, so here goes. One of the code words for pornography involving underage girls is lolita, taken from Nabokov’s book character. Thus the name Oh, Lola itself has sexual connotations. Second, when a woman loses her virginity it is often said she has been deflowered. To have a huge red (another flag) flower positioned between her legs is highly suggestive. I’m a straight, middle-aged woman and I see the symbolism. A 17-year old actress may not have been aware, but I’m sure pervs and pedophiles will love it. These ads, and others that mimic poses and pouts once seen only in porn, aren’t intended for female buyers. They are aimed at men. Free – and classy – porn without the stigma.

Wow, reading through these comments, I guess I must be a pervert, because I see exactly what´s wrong with this ad and I´m not just brushing it off as an innocent picture.
Do you people not get the whole flower-virginity-Lolita-child connection? It´s disturbing that something so obviously inspired by sexual attraction to a child (yes, I am talking about Nabokov´s Lolita, where Lola is a pretten girl molested by her stepfather), can be used to sell a product and call it sexy and fun.

Let’s see. She’s 17 years old. Almost an adult. Is the picture suggestive. Yes, a little bit. I think the only reason why this has turned into such a big deal is because it’s Dakota Fanning. You open up any magazine and you’ll find baby faced models in suggestive positions and or doing something suggestive. This is tame compared to other ads with young female models.

Ed on

You cannot have a campaign called Lola with a pubescent teen holding an oversized flowered bottle between her thighs, and claim it is not playing on her available sexuality, even if it’s “innocent” from her, as Lola always is. Those who think we are prudes for thinking so, you don’t see where this is going, the barriers it is breaking, it’s sad for us

Aaron on

Oh God. She’s 17, not 7. In less than 12 months, this will go from being considered by some maniacs “child porn” to just a “sexy picture”.

Also, I wonder if it fails to strike anyone that those who are saying, “there are sick and perverted people that may take it the wrong way”, are themselves, taking it “that way”.

Better safe than sorry–it’s borderline too much. Not one thing in particular but the polka dot dress and then the perfume right in her crotch…it crosses a line.

Marianne on

It’s not that she’s a minor or that the photograph shows a little thigh. It’s that the camera quality/wardrobe/makeup is made to resemble the types of photos that pedophiles take of children.

The camera quality is meant to look like a point-and-snap camera. Notice the shadow behind her. High quality images in high fashion magazines don’t look like that. And it wouldn’t be there if this well-paid and talented photographer didn’t want it there. It’s made to look like a cheap camera with the flash on.

The set looks like some creepy uncle’s basement.

And she isn’t posing like a fashion model either. She’s posed like a child. And her shape is narrow enough to look like a girl much younger than 17.

The perfume bottle is phallic and is arguably pointing at her genitals.

Whether it’s art or should be banned is a different question. But this is undeniably meant to evoke pedophiliac photography.

Satori on

Teenagers are human beings, and people. They have sex, and are sexual beings, just like anyone else.

It’s the misperception of them as less than full human beings with concepts and taboos like this that create the idea of a division in the first place.

Chronology means nothing. Capability, and values as a person mean everything. Treating children as inherently less than capable and needing something above them to determine and guide dehumanizes them.

It is understandable that young human beings are the future and so protected so fiercly by such a large portion of society. But, censorship and taboo are a clumsy way to do so. It is similar to restricting a group of peoples’ access to controversial books, because they may be unable to see the truth clearly and make an accurate assessment of the truth.

“Sleazy” sexual dynamics are possible at any stage of human life. But, sexuality can also have great value. We are all human beings.

Dehumanization of children through denominalizing is one of the most harmful things in societies today.

The root of the issue is not “whether it is or is not a sexual, image of a younger human being that might evoke attraction (inherently inappropriate)”. It’s the concept of whether it is or is not correct that “a sexual image of a younger human being that might evoke attraction” = “(inherently inappropriate)”

To restrict a group of human beings, to treat them as less than another group, as less capable instruments of what another person believes is a correct place to be in life, then say that they are thus less, is fallacious logic. The idea creates itself.

Peace.

I love Dakota Fanning, but I agree this is too racy. To an untrained eye it is just a sweet girl in a nice dress, yes a bit provocative with the bottle between her legs, but not too bad. Where it becomes a problem is the fact that the perfume is called “Oh Lola” and she is a child. Clearly a play off of “Lolita,” an incredible book, but about an adult man that falls in love with a young child and has sexual desires toward her.
