Ed Westwick is known for his dashing style on and off screen, so fans of the Gossip Girl bad boy will be in for a surprise when they see him dressed down in the movie J. Edgar, hitting theaters this week.
“For the first time, I wasn’t used to suits being completely tailored,” Westwick told PEOPLE at the Audi AFI Fest premiere of the film in Los Angeles last week. “That’s what I’m used to wearing … it was very different.”
In fact, the actor even had doubts when the costume department presented him with his suits. “I was like, ‘Hang on a minute. Are we sure?'” he shared. “But I guess, no, that’s the right thing. It was an interesting experience.”
While the actor recalled the less-than-flattering wardrobe required to play Agent Smith in the film, costar Lea Thompson gushed over the silky costumes — which she likened to nightgowns — that she wore to play Lela E. Rogers, the mother of movie legend Ginger.
“They were very sexy clothes,” Thompson told PEOPLE. “It was in the thirties, which was kind of a bad period for hair, but a nice period for clothing. It was really fun!”
