Nancy Shevell’s Wedding Dress Inspiration Revealed

When Nancy Shevell married Paul McCartney in London on Sunday, it wasn’t surprising to hear that Stella McCartney designed the couple’s wedding attire. After all, the newlyweds are front-row regulars at the designer’s fashion shows, and Shevell typically wears her now-stepdaughter’s designs on the red carpet.

But the real inspiration for the bride’s dress, it turns out, came from the Duchess of Windsor, wedding guest Barbara Walters revealed on Tuesday’s episode of The View.

“Stella redid it for her,” the host (the new Lady McCartney’s second cousin) said of the high-necked, long-sleeved crepe gown (below) Wallis Simpson wore when she married the Duke of Windsor in 1937. The designer back then: Mainbocher, a Paris couturier.

Shevell’s dress — which featured a lower neckline and a shorter hemline — was the first of three outfits she wore on the big day. For the reception, held in a tent at the groom’s home, she changed into another Stella creation, “a long, beautiful sort of plum-color chiffon dress,” said Walters. She then added that at one point, the couple “went upstairs and they put on jeans and T-shirts.”

Stella wasn’t the only McCartney who contributed something special to the wedding: her sister Mary, a photographer, took pictures of the family during the ceremony at the Old Marylebone Town Hall, Walters shared, and their brother, James, toasted the newlyweds at the reception. (There were only two other toasts: one by Shevell’s son, Arlen, and one by Paul, honoring fellow Beatle John Lennon on what would have been his 71st birthday.) Paul’s youngest daughter Beatrice, 7, was a flower girl, and also wore a dress by Stella.

As a lifelong Beatles/Paul fan, I am very happy for him. I know that he can never replace his lovely Linda, but he deserves to have someone in his life who loves him for who he is inside;as he is outside. This one is definitely not about money. I love the clothes designed for them by Stella…I think she is brilliant (and very hot!)He’s given so much to the world, let him be happy.
I’ve been to his live show and the guy can rock out like no other! Love all the McCartney’s!

Priscilla: Nancy is worth $400,000,000.00 through her family’s trucking empire!! She hardly married him for the money. You sound like a very unhappy person who can’t be gracious or happy for anyone.

Linda Eastman’s $ was from the Linder department store fame. Nancy did sign a one page pre-nup stating she won’t go after Paul’s kids $. Research something before you speak, saves time…

Good for Paul and his Bride! They’re absolutely lovely together. And, no, she’s not Linda, and Thank God she’s not “millie” !! She’s a successful woman, and an American! A good match. And, as a 50+ American Lady, I love it that he found another one to favor. I think it’s romantic that he believes in love first and foremost, and not money. As for Linda, She’s there with him in all of their children. It’s time to move on and be happy. Once last gush – I love that he honored John on his magical day. Best Wishes to All!

@Lilkunta, Linda was indeed from a wealthy American family. Her father was a highly successful entertainment attorney, as is her brother, who took over the family law practice upon their father’s retirement and death. Linda’s personal wealth eventually surpassed Sir Paul’s personal wealth before her untimely death, and today is still more valuable under Paul’s management firm. Yoko Ono is also from a wealthy Japanese family, and John and Paul used to tease each other about whose heiress girlfriend was more wealthy.

Courtney, as an ex-pat and a litte more knowledgeable of the history of my beloved homeland (and, yes, I am also incredibly fond of my adopted country!), Princess Margaret did actually inherit a title following her marriage to Antony Armstrong Jones on May 6, 1960. In 1961, the husband of the princess was created Earl of Snowdon, whereupon Margaret became formally styled HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. Just wanted to clear that up!! Additionally, the future Queen Elizabeth II was bestowed with a number of titles after her uncle David, “King” Edward VIII (and, yes, the parentheses are sarcastically included) renounced his right to the throne and Princess Elizabeth became heir following her brave and patriotic father, King George VI’s, coronation. And thank God for the then Duke and Duchess of York and their young daughters – they saved the monarchy, and that is SO not an overstatement!

Dearie, does the name EASTMAN KODAK ring a bell?
For your second question: 400 million dollars, love.

Susan on

Linda WAS NOT from the Eastman/Kodak family. Her father was a successful entertainment lawyer and her mother was heir to the Linder Dept. stores. And yes, Nancy is a VERY wealthy woman. People need to educate themselves. The UK does not recognize prenups. Why would he get something signed that’s not legally recognized and is useless? Heather Mills got about 6 months of income from him. A drop in the bucket.
