Kanye West’s Runway Debut: Critics Weigh In

Kanye West showed his first-ever collection in Paris Saturday night, as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Lindsay Lohan and Anna Wintour watched eagerly from the front row. Set in the City of Light’s Lycée Henri IV, it was a runway show filled with leather, fur and lots of skin — and the critics weren’t so impressed.

Wall Street Journal style columnist Christina Binkley wrote that the show was at time “painful,” and recalled the Flinstones when referencing one particular breastplate. And though she “liked the perforated black leather” seen on several garments, she didn’t love the way it was used. “A vast quantity of luxury materials can’t blind people to a lack of creative marksmanship,” she wrote.

Eric Wilson from the New York Times agreed somewhat; he wrote, “it was obvious that most of the clothes suffered from a poor fit.” Women’s Wear Daily, on the other hand, was a bit kinder; it called the show “neither triumph nor train wreck” and said “it had the earnest veneer of a beginner, which was sort of endearing.”

West, who helped design a line of scarves for M/M in the spring, didn’t give interviews before his show began. But he did grab the mic during an after-party at Club Silencio, and begged critics to give him a chance.

“We don’t know what the reviews will be, we don’t know what they will say, but I got a chance to go to Italy and feel those fabrics,” he said. “And I took out motherf—ing loans to get the best models, to get the best designers, to get the best venue. I gave you everything that I had.”

He continued, “I thank anybody who came to this party, everybody who supported, everybody who believed, because people thought it was a joke, and maybe people still do, but I can only grow from this point.”

It’s not about having the best venue, models or materials if your designs aren’t good. Kanye doesn’t seem to understand that. Style can be learned taste can not.

Kanye has a lot of creativity. He’s been a great song producer and has done well for himself in his own music career. Is fashion another calling? Maybe. It’s totally possible that his creativity can be channeled into that. I don’t immediately discount him for his celebrity because unlike most celebrities a lot of what he puts out there is his own. Actors/actresses use other people’s material, many singers these days don’t write their own songs, a lot of these people may have a name but have never actually created the things they are best known for. Kanye, on the other hand, did only behind the scenes things for many years and has true talents.

Really? I mean really? Why? Ridiculous.

Kanye West is a big mouth loser. I wish he’d just get lost forever. I would not characterized him as a singer either – maybe a has-been entertainer at best.

No matter what Kanye designs, he will be heavily criticized by the so-called fashion critics. He is one of the most hated celebrities in America and can do no right in the public’s eye. He will never be given a fair chance. His new line is not nearly as bad as people are making it seem. Some pieces are actually ready-to-wear unlike most runway designs. Stop being so close-minded and give him a chance, people…

Well, that was disappointing. These clothes look basic and plain. I can get basic anywhere. There is nothing new, different, or exciting here. If he wants me to buy his designs, he’s going to have to show me something I haven’t seen before. Are these clothes meant for a particular market? I don’t want to dress like an old lady, Kanye.

It’s as tacky as he is.

Karma baby, you try to get in everybodys business and want everyone to think you know everything, well I guess now you know not everyone believes in what you say, and you suck at designing. Ha Ha

Sloppy fit with no particular vision nor individual voice.
