Lauren Conrad ‘Designs Selfishly’

Lauren ConradCourtesy Lauren Conrad

Lauren Conrad seems to have found the trick to making great clothes. “Design selfishly,” Conrad, who has a self-titled collection for Kohl’s as well as her new Paper Crown line, tells PEOPLE. Her motto for creating each season’s signature look? “You know what you’d want to buy — design it.” Simple enough.

“I love floor-length pieces in pretty fabrics,” continues the former reality star, who created a resort collection for Paper Crown full of maxi dresses in a variety of silhouettes. But for fall, she’s feeling leather — faux, that is. “You can find an alternative to leather or fur, so use it,” she says. “I like that faux leather has more stretch, so we did a legging, which I love.”

There’s a continuity in each season for each line that comes from Conrad’s own vision. “The look is soft, romantic, pretty,” she explains. And she’s also figured out that style isn’t just about looking good. “Dress in what makes you feel good about yourself too,” she advises.

Full Steam Ahead: The Kardashians Continue with Their ‘Kollection’

Kardashian Kollection for SearsDimitrios Kambouris/Wireimage

Following the successful launch of their Kardashian Kollection for Sears, sisters Kim, Kourtney and Khloé aren’t even thinking about slowing down.

“We are constantly inspired and always designing,” Kim tells PEOPLE. “Out next is our denim and home collections. We’re all so family oriented — maybe we’ll design a kids line soon, too!”

The possibilities seem endless — kind of. Kim already has her own jewelry line, and Kim and Khloé each have fragrances. So would they ever consider creating a makeup line? “Possibly,” Kourtney says. ” We love doing things that we have a passion for.”

Thankfully, the ladies also have a passion for spending time together. “We all worked together on every piece in the collection,” Kourtney shares. “We are constantly bouncing our ideas off of each other and since we are each others’ soul mates, it’s easy for us to give honest feedback which is really important.”

Christian Siriano: Designing for Taylor Swift Is Good for Business

In the four years since taking top honors on season 4 of Project Runway, Christian Siriano has kept himself busy, building a veritable fashion empire.

His latest venture, an expanded collection for Payless ShoeSource, is an unexpected one for a designer best known for frothy and “fierce” creations, but Siriano is also a shrewd salesman.

“The new expanded collection, when we think about it, is for every customer that walks in the store,” he told PEOPLE at a Christian Siriano for Payless in-store event. “You’re like, ‘Okay, what is the mom wearing to work? What does the daughter want to buy?’”

And with recent coups including dressing Sarah Hyland and Runway mentor Heidi Klum for the 2011 Emmy Awards, Siriano’s business savvy also applies to cultivating celebrity relationships. Working with Modern Family star Hyland “made sense for me because Sarah is such a young, new, beautiful actress,” he explained. “I think she really needed a moment.” And designing for Klum is always a no-brainer. “I would do anything for her. She can call me tomorrow and I’d make something.”

‘Bridesmaids’ Star Melissa McCarthy Planning a Plus-Size Clothing Line

Melissa McCarthy Emmys DressPaul Buck/EPA/Landov

“Trying to find stuff that’s still fashion-forward in my size is damn near impossible,” Melissa McCarthy jokingly laments in the new issue of the Hollywood Reporter. “It’s either for like a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker, and there is nothing in the middle.”

Disgruntled by the lack of choices, the Bridesmaids star has decided to launch her own line for plus-size women, which she’ll co-design with couturier Daniella Pearl.

Though a familiar tale, this isn’t a case of another celebrity gone fashion-crazy: McCarthy actually has a background in design. “I went to college for clothing and textiles and always thought that I would design women’s clothing,” she told reporters on Emmys night after nabbing her best comedic actress award for Mike & Molly. “Then [I] ended up in New York doing stand-up.”

Fast-forward a few years, and McCarthy is one of 2011′s breakout stars, with a hit movie and television series under her belt — but nary a chic dress to be found. With the Emmys looming, she decided to take matters into her own hands, designing a one-of-a-kind gown for the big night.
