WATCH: Mary-Kate, Ashley Olsen Visit Honduras for TOMS

08/30/2011 at 03:00 PM ET

The photos were already moving, but the video really says it all. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen visited children outside of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, earlier this summer, delivering TOMS walking shoes to those in need.

“We’re very aware of [TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie's] work and what he was doing and trying to accomplish, and it’s something obviously we wanted to be a part of,” Ashley shares in the clip above.

The sisters partnered with TOMS to create limited-edition shoes through their label, The Row; for every pair of TOMS + The Row shoes sold, a child in need will receive a new pair of shoes.

“It has been so much fun to collaborate with The Row and to see the girls and their friends down here on their hands and knees putting shoes on kids’ feet,” Mycoskie adds.

In fact, the experience proved quite humbling for the stars. “I think it’s really taught me a little bit more about myself and how I can be more affectionate and loving,” Mary-Kate says. “And how putting a smile on a kid’s face is … well, there’s nothing like it.”

Adds Ashley, “The children are so special, kind, they’re loving, welcoming and they’re just incredible.”

I think it’s great they’re involved, but something the article said kind of made me go “huh”.

“The sisters partnered with TOMS to create limited-edition shoes through their label, The Row; for every pair of TOMS + The Row shoes sold, a child in need will receive a new pair of shoes.”
Sounds like in order for the children to recieve a pair of shoes, a person would first have to buy a pair from their line, plus the TOMS line? So, they’re not actually just giving out of the goodness of their hearts? Sounds more like a covered up way of marketing their lines. As wealthy as some of these celebs are it always makes me grimace a bit when they do these sideways “donations”. Why not just donate and leave off the part where someone has to buy your products first? That, to me, is a real donation/charity.

Either way, I’m glad they’re involved.

Congrats (me) for figuring that out?! Because there is no way possible they can make a pair of shoes to give away for free without somebody buying a pair of shoes? Why does that make you go “huh” did you not know thats how it works? Of course you have to buy the shoes for them to give away a pair for free! Where do you think they will get the money to make another pair of shoes that they won’t profit from?? LOL!! The owners of Toms aren’t making sideways donations, they are basically having us pay for two pairs of shoes esentially or they are paying for the cost to make these and writing them off as a part of their non-profit or whatever. What you said made no sense in the sense of “oh it’s sketchy” No it’s not sketchy, MK/A designed a pair for the company, and they are still holding true to donating shoes to those in need regardless of the fact that their designs use high end fabrics.

actually the row just paired with toms to design the higher end version of the shoes. you purchase it from toms only then they match it. it works the same only the olsen twins put their star power to good use and attached their successful line’s name to the shoes.

I have been buying Toms for a while now and will continue to do so, as long as I can afford them. Happy to see that they delivered in their promise.

this is great!

who cares. there are millions of people who volunteer with NGO’s in areas in worse poverty than honduras, who live in huts, pump water, and put thier lives at risk. They don’t get paid, and don’t stay in fancy hotels while ‘doing good’ and will never get mentioned in any publication.
How about focusing on these people.

Why dont you see this happening the United States. We have children who are in need just as much as the children living overseas are. I think we should take care of our own before we help other countries.
