Which VMAs Style Moment Was Most Shocking?

Baby bumps, Britney tributes and Bruno bashing — oh my! The MTV Video Music Awards were filled with many buzz-worthy moments last night, but the style choices of several stars gave us just as much to talk about.

Lady Gaga started the two-hour show as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone, wearing Brooks Brothers pants, a men’s jacket, little makeup and a short black wig. She convincingly stayed in character (and costume) all night, even hitting on Britney Spears while presenting her with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj hit the black carpet in a jagged bodysuit accessorized with plush creatures, knee-highs and lots of colorful hair. “Tokyo inspired this outfit,” she told reporters during the show. “Harajuku is something I have been absorbing for a long time.”

Though Justin Bieber one-upped her in the shock-value department — he brought his pet snake, Johnson, along for the ride — his accessories were slightly more demure; namely, his DITA Senator glasses. “I was just going for something fun and youthful and not too put together,” he told reporters. “Something that would go good with the cheetah shoes.”

But Beyoncé‘s accessory was the best of all: she debuted her baby bump in a flowing orange Lanvin gown, later revealing it for the television crowds in a Dolce & Gabbana tux following her performance of “Love on Top.”

It was Katy Perry, though, who became the night’s quick-change artist, starting out in an Atelier Versace geisha-style mini-dress, complete with parasol. To introduce Adele, the big nominee slipped into a long, high-necked purple gown, a departure from her usually revealing wardrobe. She ended the night in Dior Couture, sporting a pink top paired with a black-and-white tulip-shaped skirt and yellow cube-shaped hat, but not before looking like a broken record — literally! — in a sparkly black dress accented with vinyl bearing her name.

“I just felt like being colorful and fun and with me, I am okay with self-deprecation,” Perry told reporters. “I am all right with being laughed at and laughed with and just laughing, so that was the inspiration of tonight: just to have a laugh.”

There was a lot to look at, but we want to know: which VMAs style moment was most shocking?

What is it with all strange clothes and looking like a clown. I’m all for being artistic and original but it’s getting out of hand.

Lady Gaga’s alter ego was a little annoying. The whole time she was out there, I was waiting for her to bust out “When you’re a Jet, you’re a Jet all the way…”. She’s a decent singer and musician, but Madonna did all of this 20 years ago. Ms. Gaga isn’t as cutting edge as everyone seems to think she is.

Just another perfect example that music and “art” has gone completely down the drain in today’s world. The majority of “talent” these days is a joke and dressing like circus performers just proves it. Cover up your lack of ability with trying to look like an edgy moron.

This is MTV pretending they care about music. It was all very disappointing and why show something when you have to bleep every word in the song. If MTV actually was Music Television, I could take this seriously. This was a non-event.

Lady Gaga & Nicki Minaj’s were the MOST shockingly dressed last night. I LOVED Lady Gaga’s message. That was a total PLUS for her but she doesn’t look good as a GUY. lol Nicki, what the Heck were you thinking? It’s like you just left a PJ party for 10 yr olds. lol

They all look ridiculous with the exception of Beyonce.

what the heck happened to MUSIC these people minus Beyonce’ looked liked smacked a–es. I “WANT MY MTV” have been long over. I used to drone in front of that t.v. all night watching videos and being young and it was fun. It’s like a circus now I hate it!

Ugh. I was completely disappointed with the 2011 VMAS! Don’t get me wrong, I love Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne but Lady Gaga was just too annoying and why would Lil Wayne perform a song that was mostly bleeped out! Plus hardley any awards were given out. It was a complete waste of my time!!

devsmom on

Lady Gaga…wouldn’t look bad if she dressed normal, Nikki Minaj..WTF?,Katy Perry..beautiful lady but hate the pink hair, Justin Beiber…out past his bedtime, and Beyonce…stunning as always!

Elraya Breham on

Beyonce was the most shocking, I LOVE HER TO DEATH (LITERALLY) and i just wish her and Jay- Z the best of luck with the baby, they will always be in my prayers.!!!! They are just so cute.!!!!

bonboop on

Bieber isn’t shocking, because he always looks like he’s trying to be cool, and it’s not working. A snake, those glasses and those pants, with the crotch down to his knees. That may be the style, but he looks more riduculus. He’s a loser and needs to go home and play his video games and watch cartoons. He couldn’t be cool if he just walked out of a freezer.

I was very disappointed with the awards last night. Lady Gaga is ridiculous, smoking on stage and dressing like a man…what kind of message is she sending to our kids. Nicki Minaj looked like a clown. Justin Bieber is great. His mother raised him right!! He is so well grounded, for now… lets hope he stays that way! In terms of style his shoes were not my favorite. Beyonce looked amazing!! She was gorgeous and elegant!

Jackie Lemmink on

I didn’t mind Lady Gaga at the beginning but I was mad she didn’t change. She was too “in character” when she accepted her award, the real Lady Gaga (female) wasn’t there. She need to do more costume changes like Katy Perry. I love Lady Gaga but she needs to stop pushing the bar sometimes…..

mari on

justin bieber please start taking pointer from MEN not circus clown, Beyonce look beautiful best wishes too you .

eribri on

I feel like celebrities don’t dress crazy to just do it but to up someone else now. This is getting ridiculous with all these fashion weirdo outfits.

Back in the day it was shocking (aka like Madonna cone boobs)but it wasn’t WEIRD. They’re slightly tainting that “shock” now a days.

Dana on

I can’t stand Lady Gag-Gag or Justin Beaverbrain. They need to go away FOREVER. Give me Britney, Katy, Beyonce, etc any day.

JJ on

Beyonce was the best dressed.

[...] While the platinum-selling emcee quickly monopolized the female presence in hip-hop, Nicki’s image began to evolve with the introduction of her alter-ego — Roman Zolanski — her ever-changing hair, and her eccentric fashion choices. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a hater, it’s hard to deny the entertainment value of watching the petite rapper strut the red carpet in accessories that nearly topple her (see “Harajuku” inspired 2011 VMA outfit).
