Lee DeWyze’s Engagement Ring: Inspired by a ‘Phantom’

Their engagement was right out of a fairytale — he popped the question on a private yacht under a fireworks-filled sky at Disney World — and the engagement ring Lee DeWyze gave to girlfriend Jonna Walsh has its own whimsical story, too.

“I knew Jonna was a fan of Phantom of the Opera, and the ring in the play,” DeWyze tells PEOPLE of a circle-cut engagement ring seen in the musical. “I went looking for one that was similar and I found one — the Tiffany Embrace ring — that was perfect.”

Before purchasing the 1.5-carat bauble, he showed it to Jonna’s sister, who gave him the green light. “Everything was good,” he says. “I bought the ring two months ago and I was waiting for the right time to ask. I figured out how to do it, and once I knew the date, I decided this was going down.” The engagement, which took place on July 16, went off without any major hitches — except for the fact that it almost didn’t happen!

Jonna, who wasn’t feeling well, tried to beg off making the trip. Luckily, her now-fiancé convinced her otherwise. “I said, ‘No, no, we should go,’” he recalls, laughing. Getting down on his knee as their boat circled the resort’s lagoon, he spoke from the heart. “I had a speech prepared but it all went out the window so I just asked her,” he says. “She started crying and I said, ‘Is that a yes?’”

I loved him on American Idol and I am so happy for him now. They are a beautiful couple. The only thing better would have been to have met my daughter..lol.. Be blessed Lee!!

Congratulations to the happy couple!

So nice, that he didn’t feel the need to sell his soul for an outrageous, over the top ring. Nice job Lee!

Buying a ring from Tiffany’s is so idiotic. Seriously…22K for 1.5 carats? ARE YOU SERIOUS? I just don’t get it. Their diamonds aren’t harvested from the moon, people. They jack up the price because of the name on the box…such a waste of money!

- Lauren on

Wow Lauren, you’re a bitter, little nitty aren’t you?

- Madeline on

Jealous much Lauren?

Lauren, ha, ha, ha I went directly to Tiffany’s website too and that is the price they have listed. I have 3 stackable, diamond eternity bands from them and although they are outrageously priced, they are gorgeous.

It is actually pretty and delicate….I am so tired of seeing 12 carat diamonds

No. It’s called being an informed consumer. My ring would have cost 3x the amount had my husband gone to Tiffany’s. For the same size and clarity. They are notorious for charging an insane premium because there are lots of dumb people who will flush an extra 5-10K for nothing but the name on the box.

Are you kidding me 1.5??? my boyfriend got me a bigger one than that and I am not famous and we didn’t spend anything like that price!!! Anyway, I never heard of these people. LOL
