Why Beyoncé is No Fashion Snob

Vanessa Hudgens Gimme Shelter

She’s rocked knee-high Sergio Rossi gladiator boots and even a white feather-laden Givenchy Haute Couture gown, but when it comes to fashion, Beyoncé is no label snob. The singer is sporting some up-and-coming designers in the artwork for her latest album, 4 — but there’s nothing under the radar about these outfits. On the album’s fold-out cover, the star wears a fox-fur stole by the cult French designer Alexandre Vauthier embellished with Swarovski crystals by the Lesage embroidery house. Inside the fold, she sports “Daisy Duke” shorts by young French designer Julien Fournié and a lemon-yellow mini-dress by fashion student Leah Rae. And for the deluxe cover (above), Beyoncé chose a purple-and-black beaded dress by French designer Maxime Simoens — who’s just 27 years old. “It was important to Beyoncé that the choice of clothing not be about the brand but about the quality of the work,” Knowles’s creative director, Jenke-Ahmed Tailly, tells the New York Times. “The album is a musical gumbo of everything Beyoncé likes. Each song really has a different personality, so we decided to do the cover like an editorial for a magazine, with each song having its own style.” But she’s not the only one in her family taking notice of budding talent. For her headlining gig at the Glastonbury Festival in England last month, the singer wore another Vauthier creation, a gold mini-dress, which the designer says was a last-minute suggestion by her husband, Jay-Z. Natalie Portman’s Fiancé Dances Into His Advertising Debut

Dancing freely over New York City, Natalie Portman‘s fiancé (and new dad) Benjamin Millepied faces the camera in his first-ever ad for Yves Saint Laurent’s newest men’s fragrance, L’Homme Libre. Billed as a scent that walks the line between “freedom and fate,” according to WWD, the fragrance is the third in a trilogy of L’Homme colognes, which also includes L’Homme and La Nuit de L’Homme. Libre, a woody scent featuring notes of basil, violet leaves, pink pepper and nutmeg, will retail for $43 to $75 when it hits shelves this fall. To coincide with the launch, Millepied, principal dancer for the New York City Ballet, also stars in a commercial for the fragrance, in which he dances through Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. Shot in May, the spot will begin airing in the United States this October. He isn’t the first person in Portman’s circle to be featured in an YSL ad: Vincent Cassel, who costarred in Black Swan, appeared in the commercial for La Nuit, which coincidentally, was shot by Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky. Tell us: What do you think of Millepied’s ad?

VIDEO: Behind the Scenes with Kate Winslet for St. John

Kate Winslet has been busy working her sexy side as the new face of luxury knitwear brand St. John and as a special treat, the company has released a behind-the-scenes video from the shoot for the actress’s fall 2011 advertising campaign. In the clip above, shot at the historic Loew’s Theater in New Jersey, a sultry Winslet talks about wearing clothing that simply feels good — and looks good, too. “The clothes are cut beautifully, the fabrics are elegant, you can look extremely chic without trying too hard,” she says in the clip above. “You don’t feel that the clothes are something that only a model would be able to wear.” And with her own children to raise, Winslet said she feels inspired by fellow mothers and other women who give their all, one of the many reasons why she loves the ease of the brand. “The St. John collection is effortless and chic, and I think speaks to how real women live and dress today,” she shares in a statement. Vanessa Hudgens’s On-Screen Transformation: ‘I Really Did Look Like a Boy’

Vanessa Hudgens Gimme Shelter
Albert Michael/Startraks

For her role in the upcoming Gimme Shelter, Vanessa Hudgens didn’t just play her character — she became her character. “The tattoo, the hair, the clothes, the piercings, the attitude, the everything,” she tells PEOPLE. “The walk, the talk … it was a completely new person. I really did look like a boy.” Gaining 10 lbs. for the role, plus chopping her hair and adding several piercings “automatically puts you into a different headspace,” she says. “Not to mention the places we were filming. We were in the grimiest, dirtiest places, and I was fighting every day, being fought, being beat down and it was all extremely draining even though it was acting.” Speaking to PEOPLE Monday at Neutrogena’s Wave for Change event in Los Angeles, the actress, still sporting cropped hair, said life has calmed since filming — and aside from a summer of skydiving and tattooing, she’s happy to be helping a good cause. “I love working with charities, I love children, and there is so much we can do,” she said. “Wave for Change makes it super easy for kids to make a difference and give back.” Hudgens, Hayden Panettiere and Miranda Cosgrove each designed a tote bag for Wave for Change, available through Aug. 31 for those who purchase two Neutrogena products at Target. For each product purchased, Neutrogena will donate one dollar to globalgiving.org — up to $250,000. Hudgens explained that her tote was made to help disaster relief victims. “It’s ‘Hope,’ because everybody needs hope in times of need,” she said. “Some of the inspiration came from the movie … my character names her baby Hope.” Panettiere, also a face of Neutrogena, told PEOPLE that hers was designed with animal charities in mind. “It’s in the shape of a heart, but it’s made up of dolphins and whales and birds and stingrays and swordfish,” she explained. “It was definitely a collaboration.” –Reporting by Reagan Alexander
