EXCLUSIVE: Dolce & Gabbana on ‘Chameleon’ Scarlett Johansson

Dolce and Gabbanna on Scarlett JohanssonCourtesy Dolce & Gabbana

The word ‘muse’ might be bandied around the fashion world — but for Dolce & Gabbana’s designing duo a relationship with Scarlett Johansson goes beyond clichés. “I wouldn’t say [Scarlett is] a muse, but an interpreter,” Stefano Gabbana explains to PEOPLE of working with the face of the label’s cosmetics line, The Makeup. “Scarlett is a wonderful woman who, thanks to the fact that she is an actress, is able to play every time a different type of woman, or better, different aspects of the character of a woman: sometimes ‘girl next door,’ some others a ‘seducer.’” Adds Domenico Dolce, “And it’s exactly this thing that we like most in her. She’s like a chameleon, she knows how to play with her image.” In her latest campaign, for the Italian Summertime collection (above), she does just that, this time channeling the natural sensuality of stars like Sophia Loren. “We really wanted to create a look that was full of the vitality and sensual perfection of a heady summer day in Sicily,” says makeup artist Pat McGrath. “It was imperative that Scarlett’s skin looked gently sun-blessed and full of healthy vitality,” she continues, “so I blended the Animalier bronzer all over her face, paying particular attention to Scarlett’s cheeks, nose and brow bone. I then applied a light dusting of Luminous Cheek Colour in Sole upwards at the very height of the cheekbone, just where the light would hit the highest point of her face and give her cheeks a beautiful natural color.” The result? Bellissima. –Katherine Kluznik Rentmeester

Christina Hendricks’s Style Splurges? Facials and ‘Truly Beautiful’ Dresses

Christina Hendricks style splurges

She doesn’t have too much in common with her Mad Men character, Joan Holloway, but actress Christina Hendricks has taken a major style tip from her on-screen alter ego. “Wear pencil skirts,” she tells PEOPLE. “I have a fantastic black fishtail one from Banana Republic that I’ve been wearing for years.” Admitting she’ll splurge on “a truly beautiful dress, because even if it’s expensive, it’s a whole outfit,” the curvaceous star says she lusts after designs from L’Wren Scott and Dolce & Gabbana. But she’s not just into fashion: her beauty routine includes La Mer moisturizer, Benefit erase paste concealer, twice-yearly Ole Henriksen facials (“My skin glows for two months afterward,” she says of her visits) and Premier Figuier by L’Artisan Parfumeur. “My friends are always like, ‘Oh yeah, we knew you were coming,’” she says of her signature scent. “Not that I wear that much of it!” But Hendricks, an ambassador for the Latisse Wishes Challenge, reveals it’s her hair that requires the majority of her attention. Naturally a dark blonde, she hits the salon “every six weeks” to maintain her color. Not that she minds. “I have always felt sassier as a redhead,” she shares. “I don’t even know what my real color would look like at this point.” For more of Hendricks’s style picks, check out the July 18 issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now. –Reporting by Jackie Fields and Suzanne Zuckerman

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Launch Handbags for The Row

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen launch handbagsCourtesy Barneys New York

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are expanding their fashion empire yet again, this time with handbags! The sisters are launching a nine-bag collection from their brand, The Row, including a day tote, backpack, doctor bag and classic shoulder bag made from luxe materials like python and alligator. (The goods will hit Barneys New York in August.) And although the actresses-turned-designers are clearly connoisseurs of the fashion world, when it comes to their own personal style philosophies, they wear what makes them happiest. “I dress for me and usually whatever suits my mood,” Mary-Kate tells sister Ashley in a chat on Barneys.com, for which the pair interviewed each other. For Ashley, wardrobe staples are all about simplicity. “A great pair of vintage jeans, a tailored suit, a crisp white button down, Parisian stripes, and a great men’s watch,” she lists to Mary-Kate. Do they covet fashions from a certain time period? Not necessarily. “There are important style contributions from almost every era,” Ashley shares. “Drawing on the right references at the right time is the key.” But don’t expect to see them following any recycled trends. “My problem is not with the trends themselves,” says Mary-Kate, “but the fact that trends are constantly repeating themselves.” –Kim Peiffer

Katie Holmes: ‘No’ to Old Lady Clothes, ‘Yes’ to Day-of-the-Week Underwear

Katie Holmes for InStyle

Katie Holmes always manages to look fabulous when she’s on (and off) the red carpet, but the August InStyle cover girl says there’s a fine line between becoming a fashion do — and a fashion don’t. “I’m not afraid to try a new designer or do something trendy, but it has to look right on my body,” the Holmes & Yang designer tells the magazine. “You don’t want to look like a fashion victim!” To prevent any missteps, she has a list of looks she avoids. “Certain colors don’t work on me; yellow isn’t my friend. I don’t like big, pouffy sleeves. And some dresses, like if it has a big bow and skirt, are too old-ladyish on me. If I can wear it when I’m 80 I’m going to wait.” Speaking of 80, the actress says she hopes to “age gracefully.” And if not? “I’ll have to figure it out,” she jokes. “But I don’t think I’m ever going to do my lips — my sisters would kill me!” Telling InStyle that she’s very close with her three older sisters, the actress says she loved when they’d put makeup on her and comb her hair. Little did they know she’d later experiment with her tresses, dealing with the trials and tribulations of bobs and bangs, among other styles. But the star says it’s her current, long locks that suit her best. “Long hair makes me feel most like myself,” she shares. “And it’s much easier to deal with. If you have short hair and you’re having a bad hair day, it’s pretty obvious.” But what makes bad hair days a little better? According to Holmes, nice undies — her favorite splurge. “They make you feel special when you put them on in the morning,” she explains. “Even when I was a little girl I loved my ‘days of the week’ pairs. I love the hot pink ones, that makes my day!” Read more with Holmes in the August issue of InStyle, on newsstands July 15. –Kim Peiffer

Will You Take Courteney Cox’s Beauty Advice?

Courteney Cox Beauty Blog

Courteney Cox knows that the best hair dye can be picked up at a drugstore for $9 — but some products, like Edward Bess eye shadow, are worth the splurge. In the spirit of sharing her favorite tips and tricks, the actress is writing a new blog for xoJane.com, the latest creation of former Jane and Sassy founding editor Jane Pratt, where she’ll post at least twice a month, her rep confirms to PEOPLE. (Estranged husband David Arquette created a T-shirt for the site earlier this year.) As the designated home editor for the site, her column focuses on her lifestyle essentials, such as Clairol Natural Instincts Brass-Free For Brunette ($8.99), her favorite hair treatment for “dark-haired girls who don’t like red hues coming through.” She also revealed her Edward Bess products-of-choice, Ultra-Luminous Eye Shadow ($30) and Sheer Satin Cream Compact ($60), in her first post. But she’s not the first celeb style icon who’s taken her know-how to the blogosphere. Gwyneth Paltrow updates fans with lifestyle advice, workout plans and recipes on her online newsletter, GOOP.com, and former reality star Lauren Conrad launched thebeautydepartment.com in April, where she dishes out details on the latest in hair and makeup. With three celebrity beauties offering star-worthy beauty advice, tell us: Who’s your go-to? –Alison Schwartz

Ashley Tisdale Is Back to Blonde

Ashley Tisdale Blonde Hair

Do blondes really have more fun? Ashley Tisdale certainly thinks so! The actress, most recently a dark brunette, took to Twitter on Sunday to share a pic of her shorter, lightened locks, declaring, “its summer and im ready for some FUN.” The starlet — who celebrated her 26th birthday on July 2, with pal Zac Efron on hand — has flirted with many hair colors over the years. Blonde in her bubbly High School Musical days, she also tried a light red look before going back and forth between brunette and blonde. So is the new hue here to stay? Time will tell, but with her most recent show, Hellcats, off the air, it seems she’s free to color her hair as she pleases. Tell us: Do you prefer Tisdale as a blonde or brunette?
