When Vanessa Minnillo ventured out for that wedding dress shopping trip every girl dreams of, it didn’t go as expected. Minnillo, whose birth mother hasn’t been in her life for more than 20 years, struggled with not having her mom there with her on that special day. “Normally this is something you do with your mother, and my birth mother hasn’t been in my life since I was 9,” she explains emotionally to PEOPLE. “I have been okay with that up until now but for some unexplained reason, it really overtook me. I felt lost, confused and sad. It was very emotional.” With her matron of honor, friend Jennifer Birmingham-Lee, by her side, Minnillo worked with Monique Lhuillier to try and find the perfect dress. “This was the hardest decision in the whole wedding planning … probably because I didn’t have the support of Nick [Lachey],” Minnillo says. “We decided everything together, even his [Dolce & Gabbana] tux. For the first time, I felt a little bit alone.” To gain some clarity, the bride-to-be decided to ask for her groom’s opinion. “I said, ‘What do you want to see me in when you marry me and I become Mrs. Lachey?'” she recalls. And much to Minnillo’s surprise, Lachey didn’t give a generic male response and instead, was eager to say, “Something traditional with a little modern flair.” So following their chat, Minnillo headed back to Lhuillier’s Los Angeles boutique … and the rest is history. “Literally the next day I went to Monique and tried on my three dresses for the zillionth time. As soon as I put it on, I knew this was it.” –Jennifer Garcia

Very pretty. She should have styled her hair, though. It looks wilted.

I have to admit, I got a little emotional reading this article. I can imagine it might be difficult to pick out a dress for such an incredible milestone without the help of the person who’s been your support system for years (Nick) and the person who’s supposed to be there for you unconditionally (her birth mother).

Also, I love love love how she talks about making decisions with Nick as a team. It shows incredible maturity – and I can’t wait to see this beautiful couple start a family together! I’ve always loved Vanessa and Nick together, and with how they’ve played out their relationship, marriage was the obvious next step.

Congrats to them!!

The dress in gorgeous. The couple is ideal. Nick and Vanessa appear to be perfect for each other and are obviously very much in love. Glad to see that Nick got it right, finally. Cna’t wait for the special of the wedding on TLC on Friday.

Boo-hoo. It must be difficult being rich, famous and working with a designer on your wedding dress with no budget. Life is hard.

my daughter & i haven’t spoken in almost a year and it’s horrible:( i wish for vanessa that her mother could of shared in the happiness of her wedding day…if anything, the pain of not having her there hopefully will show them both that reconciling may never be too late. i myself have put way too much emphasize on my own hurt feelings and should really consider not losing anymore time.

Who cares. What a ridiculous story.

Well dont know she is but I remember he was married to a girl with blond hair and she was as thick as two short planks right? There the fool is doing all over again

This marriage will last long enough to produce a couple of kids. Then the divorce proceedings will start. She should save her tears for the divorce.

Jessica is probably laughing at these two and rightly so.
