EXCLUSIVE: Dolce & Gabbana on ‘Chameleon’ Scarlett Johansson

The word ‘muse’ might be bandied around the fashion world — but for Dolce & Gabbana’s designing duo a relationship with Scarlett Johansson goes beyond clichés. “I wouldn’t say [Scarlett is] a muse, but an interpreter,” Stefano Gabbana explains to PEOPLE of working with the face of the label’s cosmetics line, The Makeup. “Scarlett is a wonderful woman who, thanks to the fact that she is an actress, is able to play every time a different type of woman, or better, different aspects of the character of a woman: sometimes ‘girl next door,’ some others a ‘seducer.’” Adds Domenico Dolce, “And it’s exactly this thing that we like most in her. She’s like a chameleon, she knows how to play with her image.” In her latest campaign, for the Italian Summertime collection (above), she does just that, this time channeling the natural sensuality of stars like Sophia Loren. “We really wanted to create a look that was full of the vitality and sensual perfection of a heady summer day in Sicily,” says makeup artist Pat McGrath. “It was imperative that Scarlett’s skin looked gently sun-blessed and full of healthy vitality,” she continues, “so I blended the Animalier bronzer all over her face, paying particular attention to Scarlett’s cheeks, nose and brow bone. I then applied a light dusting of Luminous Cheek Colour in Sole upwards at the very height of the cheekbone, just where the light would hit the highest point of her face and give her cheeks a beautiful natural color.” The result?
