Katie Holmes has been sporting an intricate band in addition to her everyday wedding sparkler, but what’s the significance of the oversize bauble? PEOPLE checked in with the design team behind Hoorsenbuhs, the L.A.-based jeweler that customized Holmes’s layered “Phantom Clique” ring, to get the scoop. Comprised of rose gold and white diamonds, the one-of-a-kind piece ranges in price from $10,500 to upwards of $15,000, says brand liaison Kether Parker. And while he won’t reveal the technique behind its construction, a customized ring can take four to six weeks to develop. “Our clients can create, with our designs, a more personal combination of metals and diamonds,” explains Parker, adding that options range from yellow gold to blue diamonds. “Bespoke commissions are what our brand was founded on.” So how involved was Holmes in her own layered tri-link design? “It was a complete surprise to her,” he confides. –Justine Harman

I second that. I don’t know if mystery is the right term for it. I don’t think husbands can go wrong with gold or diamond surprises.
