Jessica Simpson Plays Fairy Godmother to Prom-Goers in Need

Seven girls will be the belles of the ball at prom this spring thanks to a very special gift from Jessica Simpson. The singer-turned-fashion-mogul popped up on The Oprah Winfrey Show this week, where she paid a visit to students at Father’s H.A.R.B.O.R. Academy in Jacksonville, Fla. The girls’ teacher had written to Winfrey, explaining that several of the students had been in and out of foster care and didn’t have the means to afford a prom look. So Simpson swooped in, outfitting each of the girls for prom — and gifting them all with a full wardrobe from her Jessica Simpson collection. Watch the clip above to see the teens’ emotional reactions, and to check out their gorgeous prom looks!

Alyson Hannigan’s Big Mother’s Day Gift? Her Very First Chanel Bag

Alyson Hannigan Chanel Bag
Kyle Rover/Startraks

She’s had more than a decade of success in TV and movies, but Alyson Hannigan still lives humbly. In fact, the How I Met Your Mother star didn’t even own a particular celebrity staple until last week, when hubby Alexis Denisof bought her an early Mother’s Day gift. “We were at Bergdorf’s, and he got me this beautiful Chanel bag,” Hannigan, mom to 2-year-old Satyana, tells PEOPLE. “I’m very, very, very excited. This will be my first Chanel bag. I don’t know what’s kept me from it, but I just longed for it. It’s really sweet that he bought me my first one.” Hannigan says that her hesitation to shop stems in part from her upbringing. “I didn’t grow up with money, so I always thought, ‘Oh, no, I can’t [buy that],’” she explains. “It’s only been in the last five years that I’ve realized there’s no point in just having stuff if you’re not going to enjoy it.” Noting the elegant silver she and Denisof received as a wedding gift, Hannigan says she no longer saves it for special occasions only. “This stuff was so beautiful that I wondered why it was just sitting in a cabinet, never being used,” she says. “So we use it everyday now and it’s lovely. Thanksgiving isn’t going to be any less nice because I’ve seen the silver all year long. It just makes my cereal really nice in the morning.” Hannigan isn’t just celebrating her own life these days; she’s helping other moms celebrate themselves as well. The American Pie actress joined forces with StubHub, launching a national program called Mom’s Night Out, which benefits Adopt-a-Classroom. She’s also partnered with Johnson’s Baby for a March of Dimes charity initiative in honor of Mother’s Day. –Dahvi Shira

Hold onto your hats — the Kentucky Derby is on Saturday! The Derby — just like royal weddings — is known for its over-the-top headgear, and Betsey Johnson is breaking out her best and brightest designs for the big day. The designer created three big pink toppers for Saturday’s festivities, and has been auctioning them off for the National Breast Cancer Coalition (Johnson herself is a survivor). Though one was already sold, the exquisite rose hat, topped with pink & cream flowers, dark green ivy and crystals, is available right now on biddingforgood.com. The auctions are running in conjunction with Chambord Liqueur’s ‘Pink Your Drink’ program, which raises funds and awareness for breast cancer research. To promote the cause, Johnson will also appear at the big race on Saturday — albeit in a hat designed by someone else. According to WWD, she commissioned a New York City hat maker to create a pink straw hat for her, covered in pink roses and fake gems.

Natalie Portman’s Fiancé Is the Face of the New YSL Men’s Fragrance

Natalie Portman's Fiance for YSL
Charles Sykes/Rex USA

He’s a dancer, a fiancé, a father-to-be — and now, Natalie Portman‘s main squeeze Benjamin Millepied is the new face of an unnamed Yves Saint Laurent men’s fragrance. Millepied, principal dancer at the New York City Ballet, was spotted moving his way through Manhattan this week while shooting ads for the unreleased scent, which will debut in September. According to WWD, the fragrance will be third in a line of YSL scents that includes L’Homme (Halle Berry‘s beau Olivier Martinez fronts for that one) and La Nuit de L’Homme. The endorsement deal mirrors that of Millepied’s betrothed; Portman was most recently the face of Miss Dior Cherie perfume. The pair met while filming Black Swan. Tell us: What do you think of YSL’s choice?

It’s no secret that Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney are good girlfriends. Even their mothers were BFFs. “[I've known Stella] since she was a baby … yes, seriously,” Tyler’s mom Bebe Buell told PEOPLE Wednesday at the opening of the new Stella McCartney boutique in New York’s Saks Fifth Avenue. “Her mother [Linda] was a very good friend.” However, Tyler and McCartney recall bonding later in life. “I think I met you at Kate [Moss's] house,” McCartney reminded Tyler during the stylish bash. Regardless of where or how they met, the ladies share secrets, lunches and of course, fashion. “She’s very sweet about sending presents,” Tyler said of her pal. “I should say my favorite things I get to have first are the kids’ line or lingerie. I really appreciate a nice pair of panties.” And her son Milo, 6, appreciates the boys’ clothes — sometimes. “[There are] high-top sneakers that I love … little corduroy trousers and nice sweaters,” Tyler said. “But he would be happy if he could be in his pajamas all day.” Especially when mom tries to dress him up. “I kept trying to put him in the Sergeant Pepper jacket from [McCartney's collection for] The Gap. He said, ‘Nice try, mummy,’” she laughed. “Liv sends me pictures of Milo all the time in my clothes,” McCartney added. “He’s a beautiful boy, I have to say.” McCartney, herself a mom of four, says her children make great little models, too. “They have very nice clothes at their fingertips,” she shared. “They’re the luckiest kids in town.” –Jeffrey Slonim

The Duchess of Cambridge swapped her Alexander McQueen heels for basic ballet flats on Wednesday during a routine trip to the grocery store. Skipping through the parking lot of her local Waitrose supermarket in Anglesey, Wales, Kate wore one of her favorite styles, the brown patent crocodile Pirouette ($165), from luxe British brand London Sole. A spokesperson for the company tells PEOPLE that the classic style is one of Kate’s go-to designs, and confirms that the newlywed is a regular in both the King’s Road and Knightsbridge stores. “She prefers the Pirouette or the Henrietta shapes and always in neutral colors,” the spokesperson shares, adding, “she’s been coming to us for a good few years now.” Founded by shoe designer Jane Winkworth, the brand was a favorite of Princess Diana in the 1990s. “We have a history with the royal family,” the spokesperson explains, “so it’s great to see the younger royals wearing them too, like Kate and Princess Beatrice and Eugenie, who are both regular customers.” –Monique Jessen
