Jennifer Garner: I Sold Scrunchies in College

Jennifer Garner may be a successful actress, but back in college, she had other ways to pad her wallet. On the Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday, the actress revealed that her college ‘job’ was actually making scrunchies — those infamous ’80s-style hair ties covered in fabric. “My college roommate and I … we were theater geeks and we had a key to the theater department,” she admitted during an appearance to promote her new film, Arthur. “We would go in late at night and we would use their sewing machines and their elastic and we would make scrunchies. We would make boxes full of scrunchies in sorority colors or [ones that were] just cute.” And surprisingly, the gig actually paid the bills. “We went door to door in the dorms and said ‘One for $3, two for $5,’ and we raked it in! We made so much money!” But as it turns out, unfortunately, Garner wasn’t exactly an expert accessory maker. “We spent so much time on them, [but] we were so bad at them. I was constantly sewing the scrunchie to my clothes — I was a bad scrunchie maker. I’m sure half of them fell apart.” Wonder if they had a friendly return policy? Tell us: Would you have purchased a scrunchie from Garner? –Kim Peiffer

Michelle Williams Enjoyed Going Commando for ‘Meek’s Cutoff’

Michelle Williams may be known for her demure red carpet looks, but it turns out that she found a risqué perk to her most recent costumes. Williams and her costar Zoe Kazan admitted to keeping it quite breezy under their full prairie skirts while filming Meek’s Cutoff. “You can wear no underpants and just squat and pee and that’s really useful,” Kazan quipped to StyleList.com at the film’s New York City premiere. “It’s something that’s a luxury that’s only ever afforded to a man,” Williams explained. “I relished in that for a moment.” And though the dresses took some getting used to — “It felt like an ordeal to learn how to move in them and move in them comfortably,” says Williams — ultimately the actresses ended up enjoying them. “After a while, both Zoe and I came to miss them,” she admits. But not enough to bring them into her patented cool wardrobe. “We talked about it once the movie was over — if we could bring back prairie skirts or rock a bonnet. But so far, I haven’t seen either of us doing that,” says Williams. Read more from Williams at StyleList.com. –Justine Harman

Gwen Stefani Had a ‘Real Problem’ With Makeup Artists

Gwen Stefani ELLECourtesy ELLE

We’ve always loved Gwen Stefani‘s immaculate makeup: the signature bright red lips, those luscious long lashes. So it’s no surprise to hear that the singing star learned the tricks of the trade at a young age. “I started in seventh grade,” Stefani shares in the latest issue of ELLE. “We had home economics, and they’d bring someone in to show you how to put your makeup on.” And her studies in cosmetology continued through college, where she majored in art. “I can draw and paint. That’s my background,” she explains. When touring solo, or with her No Doubt bandmates, the L’Oreal Paris spokesmodel does all her own stage makeup. “I learn from makeup people now, but in the past I had a real problem with makeup artists,” Stefani admits. “I remember my first experience with a makeup artist was doing the first No Doubt album, the one that was shelved. Go back and look at how ugly I look. It is the worst makeup … From that time on, I’m thinking, I’m not going to let someone do my makeup, because they don’t know how to do it.” She’s happy to let hair stylists work their magic, though. “For the last couple tours I’ve had hair people, which is the luxury of my life,” she says. “I’m like, ‘Why did I do it myself this whole time?’” And in an industry where looks mean everything, Stefani isn’t ashamed to admit she cares about her ultra-glam outward appearance. “I mean, I’m very vain. That would be my middle name,” she says. “Of course I am, you know what I mean? I love the visual.” For more on Stefani and other women in music, visit ELLE.com or pick up the May issue of ELLE, on newsstands April 12. –Kate Hogan
