Katie Holmes’s ‘Kennedys’ Wardrobe: 45 Different Looks!

Katie Holmes Kennedys

In her new miniseries The Kennedys, Katie Holmes looks perfectly poised in the role of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis — a task that, as it turns out, required some serious prep work in the costume department. Holmes’s 45-look wardrobe was created in part by costume designer Chris Hargadon, who said perfecting the outfits required meticulous attention to detail, something both he and Holmes were prepared for. “She came with a lot of research under her belt and she had certain likes,” Hargadon tells StyleList.com. “She loved Jackie’s style in clothes, the simplicity of the lines, the fabric and workmanship.” Among the challenging outfits in the mix was a pink day suit and pillbox hat the First Lady wore the day her husband was assassinated, created for the series by Giorgio Armani. “[Katie] and Tom [Cruise] have a relationship with Armani, and when they found out she was doing the project, they asked to make her clothes,” Hargadon explains. “So we told them she would need 45 or 50 looks for all the episodes and they had to be done in about 72 days. They came back and said, ‘Then, we’d like to do two.’” (They also designed her inaugural gown.) Hargadon’s ultimate favorite, though, was a pink silk ballgown the First Lady reportedly received from a king. “I took pictures to a friend who trained as an Italian textiles designer,” Hargadon explains. “She painted a silk fabric for me, the lotus blossoms, the fronds. It almost looks like Chinese embroidery. I don’t even know if the piece made the final cut, but it was an incredible effort.” The Kennedys concludes Sunday on Reelz. Emmy Rossum Designs Namesake Handbag for Elie Tahari

Emmy Rossum Elie Tahari

What’s better than having a handbag named for you? Designing that handbag yourself! That’s exactly what Emmy Rossum got to do recently, creating the luxe leather “Emmy” bucket bag for Elie Tahari. The cotton-canvas lined tote, $398-$798, is available in four sizes and colors like tan, black, white, mushroom, yellow and metallic. “I thought a lot about the kind of bag I wanted: versatile, worn by the working woman in any season,” Rossum told WWD when plans for the purse were announced in January. “It was important that it had compartments in the sides, because I hate those big bags where your iPod cord gets mixed in with your lip gloss.” The Emmy bag is available now at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s; a portion of proceeds benefit Safe Horizons.

Taylor Swift’s Secret Talent: Cutting Hair!

It seems the singing thing is working out for country star Taylor Swift, but just in case she ever fades out of the spotlight, she has a fallback plan: hair styling. During an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno Tuesday, Swift explained that her backup singer approached her while they were on the road, saying she wanted to do something “drastically different.” When Swift suggested a haircut, her singer said sure — and asked the 21-year-old to do the honors. “We’re just kind of delirious from the road,” Swift explained. “I get scissors, I’m like … I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m the last person you should suggest to cut your hair. But I cut her hair.” Thankfully, the finished product, which included blunt bangs, was satisfactory. “She looked awesome,” Swift boasted. “So I started cutting all the people on the road’s hair!” Tell us: Would you let a friend cut your hair?

Michael J. Fox Foundation Launches Charitable Dog Tags with Polo Ralph Lauren

Talk about serendipity. What began as a chance meeting between Michael J. Fox’s wife Tracy Pollan and Ralph Lauren’s brother Jerry at the RRL store in East Hampton last summer turned into the new Michael J. Fox Foundation Dog Tag partnership, which was fêted at a star-studded party at the Ralph Lauren flagship store in New York City Thursday night. “I was shopping with my son. And then I turn around and Jerry was there,” Pollan explained to PEOPLE at the event. “I didn’t know [Jerry], but he introduced himself. And I said, ‘Oh, I was just showing my son your dog tags. And we had this idea that at some point I want to do dog tags for the foundation.’ And he said, ‘Why don’t you do it with us?’” Fox himself was thrilled by the development — and the surprising ‘family ties,’ if you will. “Tracy kind of presented it complete and in my lap,” Fox told PEOPLE at the event. “And I said, ‘Honey, good work.’ But it’s funny actually, my father was in Korea and my two uncles were in World War II. And my grandfather was in World War I, so I grew up in a military family. In fact, my father’s dog tags were around when I was a kid. And we would take turns wearing them.” The Ralph Lauren suit-clad star, now starring on The Good Wife, also explained his secret to combating Parkinson’s disease: surrounding himself with his loved ones. “For the most part, I think it’s my family,” he shared. “It’s that I’m interested and invested in every day.” You can purchase the unisex tags with inspirational messages, $95 with all net proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research, at ralphlauren.com and select Ralph Lauren boutiques. –Jeffrey Slonim

WATCH: Gwen Stefani Dresses the ‘Idol’ Ladies in L.A.M.B.

She may have designed her line L.A.M.B. just for herself, but Gwen Stefani was willing to share her wardrobe with the ladies of American Idol this week when she dressed them for Wednesday’s show. Thursday night, Idol took us backstage to the fitting session — every girl’s dream! — where Stefani helped choose outfits for the budding superstars. Admitting that she was not a stylist — and even a bit nervous! – the No Doubt rocker first pulled pants and a jacket “literally out of my closet” for contestant Hailey Reinhart. She ended up choosing a different outfit, though: a checkered linen tabard top and leather pants. Pia Toscano, who was sent home Thursday night, rocked a “tribal” animal-print jumpsuit and layered on some accessories. And 16-year-old Lauren Alaina, the show’s youngest star, skipped a look she found too “biker” and opted for gingham shorts and a matching top, covered up with a black blazer — the first look Stefani pulled. “That’s totally something I would wear, for real,” she said. The designer explained that she wanted her clothes to give the girls a confidence boost on stage: “What you’re wearing is the last thing you want to think of.” Tell us: What did you think of Stefani’s picks?

Kim Cattrall Shares Her Skincare Secrets

Kim Cattrall Talks Skincare
Nancy Kaszerman/Zuma

Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall may be 54 — but as fans of the films who saw the ’80s flashback scenes can attest, she can pass effortlessly for someone half her age. The actress attributes her youthful appearance to a strict diet and plenty of exercise, as well as a diligent skin care routine, which has recently expanded to include Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body products (she’s the new spokesperson). “Usually products are either drying or greasy, and I can’t stand either one,” she says of her search for the perfect skincare system. “I think it’s a great product. It’s eight bucks a bottle. This lasts long and it does a great job.” The star says having fair skin has made her extra conscientious of how she cares for it, too. “I have really British skin, very sensitive,” she tells PEOPLE. “I can’t even go into hot climates — I get heat rashes! I used to try new products, my skin didn’t like them … and then I’d come out with a big welt. I’m so much more protective of my skin now.” That vigilance includes scaling back her makeup and skincare routine, as well. “I’m really careful. Nothing too potent, nothing too stingy,” she shares. “I stick to really simple, hypoallergenic [formulas] … and I have to take off my makeup every night.” Good advice! Tell us: What’s your skincare routine? Alex Apatoff
