Dancing With the Stars’ Costume Designer Reveals Sparkly Secrets

Dancing With The Stars Costume Designer Reveals This Season's Outfit Plans
Bob D’Amico/ABC

There’s no doubt your television will be sparkling tonight as the latest season of Dancing with the Stars kicks off. But one of the biggest highlights of the evening — aside from discovering which stars can (and can’t!) bust a move in the ballroom — is seeing what the contestants are wearing. Recently, costume designer Randall Christensen spot with Stylelist about his behind-the-seams plans to dazzle the crowd with those infamous barely-there costumes. For reality star and former playmate Kendra Wilkinson, Christensen said there is definitely an art to covering her assets without revealing too much. “With Kendra, I think we can prove that being covered up is just as sexy as showing a lot of skin,” he tells Stylelist. “We certainly did that last season with Bristol Palin. But, as the weeks progress, if she continues competing, I’ll bet you see she wants to peel some layers away.” Model Petra Nemcova is all for that. “[She's] gorgeous with legs that start at her shoulders practically,” Christensen said. “But I was delighted to learn she’s actually studied fashion. She’s got a great eye and even sent me some sketches of ideas!” Meanwhile contestant Kirstie Alley, who has had a very public weight struggle, claims she’s a little nervous about the whole skimpy outfit situation, but is embracing it regardless. “Finding just the right look for her is an ongoing process and Kirstie really knows what looks good on her body,” Christensen says. “I’ve even had her show me clothes she loves to wear, so I can borrow some of that detailing. So I’m confident we will find just the right thing.” For more on the stars’ looks, head over to Stylelist.com. Tell us: Are you excited to see this season’s costumes? –Kim Peiffer

Hilary Duff Debuts New Bangs on Twitter!

Last month, she went brunette — and added feathers to her look — and now, Hilary Duff has gone and cut bangs! The actress Tweeted the trim on Saturday night — “new moon…new me,” she told followers — sharing a photo of her stylist friend snipping her hair. Later, she posted a second shot, thanking fans for supporting her new style. “A success! Thank god you guys love it makes me feel so good!” The actress has been a bit of a hair chameleon over the years, going from blonde to brunette (and back again) several times, dying it extra-dark in 2006 and even adding bangs in 2007. But we have to say, she works any style she tries! Tell us: What do you think of Duff’s new bangs?

Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman Admires Helena Bonham Carter

Marchesa Georgina Chapman Style
Courtesy Harper’s Bazaar

Whether on the arm of her powerful producer husband, Harvey Weinstein, or swathed in her own frothy designs, Marchesa co-founder Georgina Chapman looks more like her celebrity clientele than a behind-the-scenes designer. However, the 34-year-old former model (and new mom) swears her polished finish is merely a façade. “I look much more civilized than I actually am,” she admits in the April issue of Harper’s Bazaar. “I’m actually an incredibly disorganized, messy person. My mother says I’m like a disease that can walk into a room and get it infected. I can destroy things in seconds.” (Ouch!) And though her and partner Keren Craig’s designs are of the ultra-feminine variety, beloved by stars including Blake Lively and Halle Berry, her personal style icon is best known for quirkier choices: Helena Bonham Carter is “a genius,” she declares. ”Why not wear two different colored shoes?,” she counters regarding the stars’ much-maligned Golden Globes ensemble. “More is more!” To read about Chapman’s pre-show jitters and struggling artist era, visit harpersbazaar.com or pick up the April issue, on newsstands March 29. –Justine Harman

Keira Knightley Stars in Sexy New Coco Mademoiselle Film

Mon Dieu! In September, we shared a sneak peek of Keira Knightley‘s new campaign for Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle fragrance, and at long last, the full-length film is finally here. In the sensual, three-minute spot (above), Knightley, playing a mysterious modern-day Coco Chanel, dons a skintight camel catsuit and matching helmet and hops a motorbike, riding through the streets of Paris as Joss Stone croons “It’s a Man’s Man’s World” in the background. She arrives at a studio, where she goes behind the lens for a sexy photographer, posing for shots in an inviting bedroom set. She soon seduces her camera-wielding amour, but after asking him to lock the studio door, escapes out the window and mounts her motorbike, tucking a tiny bottle of Coco Mademoiselle fragrance into her suit. The video — set to air in shorter form on cable television beginning Tuesday — is part of Knightley’s second Chanel campaign (her brand debut was in 2007). A series of corresponding print ads, shot by Mario Testino, will arrive in April 2011. Tell us: What do you think of the short film? Kate Hogan

Claire Danes: Am I a Natural Blonde?

Claire Danes' SImplified Beauty Routine
Francis Specker/Landov

She rocked red hair in My So Called Life and some brown-tinged curls in Temple Grandin, but Claire Danes admits she has no idea what her real hair color is. “I’ve been coloring it since I was 13,” she tells Stylelist. “I look at my brother and say, ‘Oh, that’s what I would look like.’ I identify my current blonde as my ‘base color,’ so I return to it when I literally have to wash a character out of my hair.” For such transitions, she leaves her locks in the hands of colorist Steven Amendola at New York’s John Frieda Salon. “I’m pretty passive about this stuff, so I trust him. If he decides to go lighter because it’s spring, I just say, ‘uh huh.’” When it comes to her beauty routine, Danes cuts corners by using the lash growth drug Latisse, which she recently became a spokesperson for. “My makeup artist, Matin, sometimes even has to trim them a bit,” she says of her lengthy lashes. “I still use mascara on the red carpet, but I never wear fake eyelashes anymore, which I used to do pretty often. It helps cut down on that whole process of being made up.” For more on Danes’ beauty tips — and thoughts on plastic surgery — visit Stylelist.com. –Kim Peiffer

The Gastineau Girls Launch Their Jewelry Line on HSN

Though it’s been six years since Lisa and Brittny Gastineau found pop culture fame with their reality series The Gastineau Girls, the mother-daughter team hasn’t been flying under the radar. Monday morning, they unveiled their new jewelry line, Gastineau Glamour, on HSN. “What most people don’t know is that I’ve been designing jewelry — and selling it — for the past 15 years,” Lisa tells PEOPLE. “So Brittny actually grew up in my stores, selling jewelry to herself in the mirrors. Jewelry was a natural extension of everything we’ve been doing together.” Lisa designs the pieces and builds models herself, drawing inspiration from travels and the vintage baubles she’s collected throughout the years. For her part, Brittny handles the marketing, since “she’s in step with Hollywood, and what [the stars] want,” Lisa explains. Gastineau Glamour includes rings, pendants and bracelets (ranging in price from $50 to $499) made using sapphires, pearls, topaz and more. “We try to create pieces that women will wear every day and not stick in a jewelry box,” Lisa explains. “When you look good, you feel good, too.” Check out Gastineau Glamour exclusively on HSN. Tell us: Would you buy a piece from the Gasteinaus’ line? Kate Hogan
