Spending a ton on cosmetics may be a way of life for Gossip Girl‘s queen bee Blair Waldorf, but that’s just the character shopping. In real life, actress Leighton Meester says she’s all about the bargains when she’s buying beauty products. “Look, I’m a South Florida girl — if you need mascara, you go to Walgreens,” Meester recently told StyleList. “One of the joys of my job is being able to try all different products, but if I can spend a lot less on something, I’d rather do that.” The Herbal Essences spokesmodel saves her pennies by stocking up on some of her favorite drugstore beauty must-haves, including CoverGirl lip stains, L’Oreal Naturale Mascara and one her ultimate favorites: cocoa butter. “It’s 99 cents! I love it,” she raved. But regardless of what she’s using when getting dolled up, she always keeps one style icon in mind. “Oh, Bette Davis. Serena Williams is serving up a new trend off the tennis court: nail polish! The stylish champ is collaborating with OPI to launch the Glam Slam! France collection, two sets of two new shades to be released in conjunction with May’s French Open. The first pair of hues consists of a glittery silver shade called Spark de Triomphe, packaged with a white Shatter polish, which crackles once applied over dry nails, creating a two-texture pattern. The second set features the shimmering sunset-tinged Rally Pretty Pink, which comes with a bold red Shatter. “Whether I’m on or off the court, style is important,” Williams said in a release. “In addition to watching the runways for the latest trends, I think it’s important to add my own unique elements. With the new White and Red Shatter, I can customize my nails for a high-fashion take on the classically elegant silver and sunset shades in the Glam Slam! France collection.” We’re sure those freshly manicured nails will look great wrapped around a tennis racquet! Williams is just one of many celebrities who have collaborated on OPI collections lately, joining the ranks of Katy Perry and Justin Bieber, whose polishes sold out. Was it a fashion-forward move, or a fashion faux pas? Vanessa Hudgens stepped out at a Nylon magazine party in Los Angeles Thursday night sporting a semi-1990s style: a babydoll dress topped with a cute cardigan. But what really caught our eye were her sheer black socks, which were tucked oh-so-subtly into her strappy Pollini sandals. Before you knock the Sucker Punch star’s look, know that she’s actually working a runway trend: designers at Burberry and Christian Dior sent models down the catwalk last fall in socks paired with peep-toed shoes. Reese Witherspoon Introduces “Moody” New Scents for Avon

Reese Witherspoon is a woman of many moods — at least, when it comes to her fragrance choices. The bride-to-be is expanding her partnership with Avon to introduce “Expressions,” a line of three perfumes designed to play up varying moods and emotions. The first scent, Love to the Fullest, will be released in April, and channels a sensual, sexy vibe with shimmering top notes of succulent black cherry, plush peony and amber and woods. Laugh Often, coming in May, is composed of citrus and floral notes to portray a more playful side. And Live Without Regrets, due in August, is a blend of lush petals and juicy fruit notes meant as “a celebration of joie de vivre,” according to a release. Witherspoon, who launched her first Avon scent in 2009, says the perfumes are an extension of her being. “Wearing fragrance is one way I express my personality,” she said in a statement. “No matter what my mood, ‘Expressions’ lets me convey my joy, confidence or sensuality — whatever I feel that day.” The actress, 35, is Avon’s first-ever global ambassador. Has Lady Gaga gone country? After spilling her style secrets, the star was spotted in Dallas last week walking tall — very tall — in some custom Tony Lama kicks. The 14-in. hand-cut, hand-tooled and hand-painted boots were created especially for the singer, in honor of her chart-topping single, “Born This Way.” (Which, coincidentally, is getting the Texas treatment in a special “Country Road” version dropping today.) According to a release, it took Tony Lama staffers more than 500 combined hours to craft the cowgirl boots, which feature flying unicorns, rainbows and the words “Born This Way.” Perhaps she’ll wear the second pair they gifted her when she returns to the Lone Star state to perform in Austin on April 6? Known for her ability to commandeer a trend faster than you can say “boyfriend jean,” Katie Holmes has lent her fashion credo to a new endeavor: purses! Partnering with luxury bag maker Valextra, and alongside style partner in crime, Jeanne Yang, Holmes has designed two versions of a luxe, calkfskin tote (pictured here in blue) for the aptly named Valextra for Holmes & Yang collection. The splurge of a bag retails at $3,950 and will also be available in white with navy or shiny black trim exclusively at Barney’s this July. Though the average customer may balk at the hefty price tag, Holmes says you are investing in the brand’s craftsmanship when you buy. “Their quality is exceptional,” she tells WWD of the Italian design house. “There’s such integrity in their work — they’re artists.” And for his part, Valextra’s CEO, Emanuele Carminati Molina, recognizes the power of Holmes and Yang as a tastemakers. “I knew that it was good for Valextra to try, and to mix our style with their style,” he says.
