Kate Winslet Recalls Backhanded Body Compliments

It’s hard to imagine someone as gorgeous as Kate Winslet would ever consider plastic surgery — and for the record, she doesn’t plan to. “No, I have never tried any of that stuff,” she tells Glamour in the April issue. “I don’t have parts of my body that I hate or would like to trade for somebody else’s or wish I could surgically adjust into some fantasy version of what they are.” But the stunning actress, who tops Glamour‘s ’50 Most Glam’ list for the third year in a row, did have her body confidence tested when she was younger. “When I was heavy, people would say to me — and it was such a backhanded compliment — they would say, ‘You’ve got such a beautiful face’,” she recalls, “in the way of, like, ‘Oh isn’t it a shame that from the neck down you’re questionable.’ ” But now as a certified star, Winslet is happy to take her looks to extremes — when it comes to movie roles, that is. “I love it when a character requires me to look less than my red-carpet best,” she shares. “It’s more fun playing a character that requires you to look like dog s–t. It’s my chance to challenge myself to the fullest, which is one of the great joys about this job.” The April issue of Glamour hits newsstands March 8. –Kate Hogan

In her newest role, Mad Men star Christina Hendricks bares her heart as the face of Vivienne Westwood’s ‘Get a Life’ Palladium Jewelry Collection. In conjunction with The Palladium Alliance International, Westwood created a line of environmentally-conscious pieces made entirely of the lightweight precious metal. “I admire that Vivienne uses her designs to inspire change,” Hendricks, a lifelong Westwood fan, says of the line, which features symbols of hope including trees, acorns and hearts. “As Palladium is a naturally white metal, the pieces really sparkle under the lights,” she continues. “I cannot wait to wear them on the red carpet!” And the feeling is mutual, with Westwood proffering, “Christina is the embodiment of beauty and we were delighted to have been able to involve her with this new jewelry collection.” Westwood’s husband and collaborator, Andreas Kronthaler, agrees. “She’s got something, this American sweetheart beauty … you’d do anything to go out with her,” he told PEOPLE at the line’s recent launch party in London. “She’s magnificent — a bit like Marilyn Monroe. In front of the camera there’s something very sensual.” Available this month at Vivienne Westwood boutiques in London and Los Angeles, prices range from $445 to $900. And while the collection may not put a stop to global warming, it’s certainly a sterling start! –Justine Harman

Amanda Peet Shares Her Down-to-Earth Style Secrets

Amanda Peet Style Tips
Anita Bugge/WireImage

She’s a red carpet pro by this point, but Amanda Peet admits that she still gets nervous before major Hollywood events. So how does she conquer the jitters? “I try to get a good night’s sleep,” she says. “I wear outfits that feel comfortable so I can move easily and be as un-self-conscious as possible — and I usually have a drink so I’m not too nervous!” Another recent addition to her beauty routine: Crest 3D White 2-Hour Express Whitestrips, which the new Crest 3D White spokeswoman says are a staple in her get-ready lineup. “I have huge teeth, so they need to be white,” she jokes. “I felt, well, finally this product is made for me and it doesn’t take all day.” When she’s not on a red carpet, though, the mom to two is decidedly more low-key in her style regimen: “Seriously, I don’t have a routine. If I can get out of my sweatpants for the afternoon, that’s a special day,” she says, laughing. “And [I] often leave the house wearing head-to-toe J. Crew, including shoes.” Well, for now at least. “I order from them about eight times a day, until my husband finds out about it because he sees the piles of boxes!” –Alex Apatoff

Salma Hayek has been keeping the secret to her glowing skin quiet for years — six or seven years, to be exact. But now the actress is finally revealing how she — and all the women in her family — get that flawless finish with the debut of her natural skincare line, Nuance. After divulging to PEOPLE in 2009 that she was researching ingredients for a new top-secret line, Stylelist picked up a report that it’s finally happening. “I always wanted to do this,” Hayek told T Magazine, “because my grandmother, who was a beauty, she died at 96 with no wrinkles. And you should see my mother! We have some family secrets.” Nuance will feature ingredients from Hayek’s native Mexico, like tepezcohuite and concha nacar, which she says have worked wonders on generations of women in her family because of their anti-aging properties. The affordable line will be available in CVS stores next year. Tell us: Will you buy Hayek’s new beauty line?Kim Peiffer

All the Details on Hailee Steinfeld’s One-of-a-Kind Oscar Dress

Hailee Steinfeld Oscar Dress
Jason Merritt/Getty

While walking the Oscar red carpet Sunday night, True Grit best supporting actress nominee Hailee Steinfeld was a vision in her Marchesa princess gown. But what was even more surprising than the 14-year-old’s stellar eye for style was learning that she worked with Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman to design the dress herself. “We offered to dress her for Oscars when nominations came out,” Marchesa spokeswoman Karla Barbosa tells PEOPLE, noting that Steinfeld wore the brand for the Critics’ Choice Awards, too. “She sent us inspiration images and notes, and based off of that, Georgina designed this one-of-a-kind dress for her special night.” Steinfeld told Chapman that she wanted a tea-length tulle dress in a “dusty English rose” hue, so dressmakers spent three days hand-dying 16 layers of tulle, working to get the color just right. Afterward, they hand-embroidered the gown with crystals, which were added one-by-one to “give the illusion of them fading into the skirt.” So even though Steinfeld didn’t take home a statuette Sunday night, the rising star certainly shined. –Kate Hogan
