She had her first big hit at just 12 years old, and from that point on, Elizabeth Taylor was a style icon. The dark-haired beauty with the violet eyes, who passed away Wednesday at the age of 79, stunned in dramatic Oscar gowns, boldly embraced fashion trends and became known for her affinity for brilliant baubles. She received a 29-carat diamond ring from third husband Michael Todd, but that was trumped by the sparklers gifted to her by fifth husband Richard Burton: the 33-carat Krupp diamond, 69-carat Taylor-Burton diamond (pictured, purchased for more than $1 million!) and a 50-carat, pear-shaped La Peregrina Pearl. In her later years, Taylor also launched three fragrances for Elizabeth Arden, Passion, Black Pearls and White Diamonds; the latter remains a best seller almost 20 years after its introduction in 1991. “She built a fragrance empire and one of the most successful brands in fragrance history,” Elizabeth Arden CEO E. Scott Beattie said in a statement. “She will be deeply missed.” For more of the star’s most stunning style moments, visit our gallery, Elizabeth Taylor’s Fabulous Fashions & Jewels. Kate Hogan

For those too young to have seen Elizabeth’s early movies, I would recommend “Giant” a movie she made in the mid-1950’s, with Rock Hudson and James Dean. It’s available from Netflix. A long movie at 3 1/2 hours, it was made when she was at her peak of youthful beauty in her early 20’s. Plus I think it was the last film James Dean made. I remember seeing it when I was young and the film & actors made an impression on me that I still remember. She is the last of that breed of classic silver screen mega-stars. They were in a class of their own, and unduplicated by younger stars of today.

i’m sure all those people in africa with missing limbs who worked to mine blood diamonds will give her passing as much consideration as she gave their enslavement and concentration camp-like treatment!

It is a sad day to hear Elizabeth Taylor passed away. She was one of the classic stars of those golden years. Today you do not see this in films. The stars look and dress like a local. I miss the glamor we use to see years ago in all the stars. Elizabeth was a real beauty. Elizabeth photographed just beautifully. I realize I am up there in age when I realize and see all the older stars passing a way one by one. I send love to her family and God-Speed to them. Rest In Peace Elizabeth Taylor.

To pugz: People have been wearing diamonds forever and ever. Blood diamonds? I guess every woman wearing a diamond, then, is wearing blood diamonds…they’re all mined the same way regardless of size. I don’t see what that has to do with a deceased movie star.

There will never be another Elizabeth Taylor. She taught us about beauty and aging and suffering.
