Get ready for some beauty magic: Emma Watson is the newest face of Lancôme. The Harry Potter star, 20, announced the news via Twitter Monday morning after leading followers through a series of clues over the weekend. “Thanks to her charm, romanticism and her incredible modernity, Emma Watson has become the icon of her generation,” Lancôme president Youcef Nabi said in a statement. “We are delighted by the new collaboration with Emma, who brings a fresh spirit to Lancôme.” Watson follows in the footsteps of such pretty women as Julia Roberts, Penélope Cruz, Kate Winslet and Anne Hathaway, and is the brand’s youngest ambassador to date. The partnership comes at a good time: Watson recently shared that she’s taking a break from her studies at Brown University to focus on her “other professional and acting projects. I will still be working towards my degree … it’s just going to take me a semester or two longer than I thought.” Tell us: What do you think of Watson’s latest collaboration? Kate Hogan

I always hate to see women I admire hawking animal-tested products. I was disappointed to see each of the others mentioned do it, and am disappointed to see Emma do it, too.

Kristen on

I agree with you, Amanda. I wish there was more of a focus on animal testing. There are many great beauty products that are NOT tested on animals – they should be the lines supported by celebrities.

Although Emma is certainly beautiful, I don’t know if she is “the icon” of her generation. I don’t know how women can be ‘iconic’ at 20, when they don’t even know who they are and they certainly don’t know enough yet to recommend anything, let alone cosmetics, to other women…even to other young women ‘of her generation’, who are all barely out of their teens and honestly, do they really need to use cosmetics at that age? An ‘icon’, in my opinion, should be a woman in her 30s or 40s, or even 50s, who’s used Lancome products and other cosmetics for years and who can speak to other women about which products are better, or worse, and why. That said, I know Lancome simply wants to market their products with the youngest and most symmetrical face they can find, so to that, I say, “Bravo”! Well done, Lancome!

Nicole on

There’s nothing wrong with animal testing. If it works, it works.
To be honest, it disappoints me to see that people are still making a big deal out of it.

Congrats, Emma! I hope you continue to rack in the collaborations/endorsements. :)

cynthia on

For all of those who were not aware that Lancome DOES NOT use any animal testing!

lorelei51h on

I agree with the posts against using products by Companies that conduct animal testing. I don’t need a rabbit with their eyelids removed or forcibly held open testing mascara and other cosmetics. There are plenty of computer simulations for this sort of thing. I also know when I use something and it burns, it can’t be good for me. No matter how many times these products are tested on animals, it’s still not the same as human skin and adverse reactions to the chemicals in the cremes, etc. Also, I like Emma Watson, but an “Icon for her generation”, isn’t that a too much hubris?

Jane on

L’Oreal is Lancomes parent company and they do animal test. L’Oreal has pledged to go cruelty free in 2012. If more of us chose to look for cruelty free products, maybe more companies would make that change.

Marie on

Animal Testing is bad and I can’t support People who are doing this,it’s just horrible for me.I like Animals really much and just thinking on testing Products on them,is making me sad.
Even Emma as their Face can’t change this

i am super proud of Emma! i would definitely say that she is an icon… being only 24 myself, for me, having her in the spotlight has been enlightening. she has grown from an innocent, little girl to a gorgeous young lady. she has impeccable taste, exudes class and confidence, has incredible work ethics and realizes the importance of education. maybe for an older generation, she is less of an icon, but i think she’s an excellent role model, even for me, who’s slightly older. she’s doing everything right and younger girls should definitely look to her; i have always looked to Emma for inspiration. i think she’s wonderful!

BJ Paulhus on

I love Emma Watson’s “look” but I still think that Isabella Rossellini was the “true” face of Lancome. When I think of Lancome I immediately picture her.
I wish Emma luck with her new endeavors but being from Rhode Island and having worked at Brown University in my younger days I would love to see her continue with her education at that wonderful university!

nunya on

Animal testing is totally unnecessary in the cosmetics world – just look at the number of amazing companies who DON’T test (Clinique, Revlon, MAC, etc.). It’s always disappointing to me when celebrities sign on as the “face” of a company that still uses this outdated practice.

yay on

Nicole, I don’t know how you could say something like that. Since you feel that it’s okay to test a product on a living creature that can feel pain and that can be disfigured, blinded, etc, maybe you should volunteer to be the “guinea pig” and see how you like it. I know there are some very ignorant people in this world but sometimes I’m amazed nonetheless.

Tommy on

I think it is great to see her as the new face, as she is a great roll model for younge women. As for the animal tested products…most, if not all of the industry is aware of the bad press, so cruel practice has long since stopped. At least they have food and shelter unlike the many stray and abandoned animals around today.

Christine on

I completely agree with you Amanda. I love Artistry cosmetics!!! Not only are they not tested on animals, they are US made products! Pharmaceutical grade make-up and skin care, at a much more affordable price than Lancome. Just my perspective.

MissMel on

@Lynn-What does age have to do with knowing who you are? I am nearly twice Emma’s age and I think she is a remarkable young woman. She has poise and confidence and, fashion wise, she seems to be very aware of what works for her as she is consistently on best-dressed lists and always looks beautiful.

As far as recommending make-up, she has been working as a professional actress since she was 9. Between filming, premieres and photo shoots, she has probably worn more make-up and worked with more professional make-up artists than anyone here. She probably has a better idea of what good make-up is than I do!

I really have to disagree here. Of course we younger women wear make up. Make up isn’t just to make you look younger but a form of self expression. It is just as much for the young as for the mature. It’s very frustrating that because of her age people would question her ability to represent a make up company. Since when is there an age requirement on iconic beauty? That’s just silly. You want advice on which products to use? Pick up a magazine or do a google search, or better yet, ask your neighborhood twenty year old.

I hope L’Oreal/Lancome goes cruelty-free soon. I used to love love love my Miracle perfume. But when I learned of all the animal testing the company does, I knew I had to say goodbye.
It’s silly to some, but really, when do practicing your Principles come in? It’s in the big things AND the little things.

$$ must have been amazing for her to put her studies on hold. I would say “stay in school,” but you’re only young once, and she might not get the same gigs as she gets older.

MARGARET JACKSON on

Shame on Lancome! Most of their market represents an older generation of buyers. They should have chosen an older women to represent the company. A young girl can use Cover Girl not Lancome! Also, she is not very pretty. Just an average face.

David on

Sorry but I would rather things be tested on animals and proven safe then put on kids and find out later they are not. I am not suggesting animals have no rights…but they have fewer than humans.

Christina on

Lancome is used by young women all over the place. I have been using Lancome since I was 18 and I’m 27 now. If it’s geared more towards older woman, than a younger woman is just the ticket to get the younger girls to buy their products. I think Emma is beautiful and a very good choice for the new face of Lancome.

Liz on

PS- all you people who are against animal tetsing better be vegetarians, or you’re a bunch of hypocrites. It’s the cool thing to say animal testing is wrong these days. It definitely isn’t a good thing but you sound pretty silly saying it’s wrong while eating your McChicken.

Bree Garrison on

Emma truly smarts a beautiful face, however, she, with such short hair, lacks a feminine qualifty that is required to display ultra beauty. And how does a young person know so much about cosmetics and their application? One would be cautious when considering purchasing their products. It is all about star quality and nothing else. Bree

LV in TO on

I don’t understand why this high end beauty company chose such a young face as its image. Of course they’re going to look young and fresh if you are in your teens or early 20’s, it’s not the $100 anti-wrinkle cream!!

You want advice on which products to use? Pick up a magazine or do a google search, or better yet, ask your neighborhood twenty year old.

The root of my objection to the role of Emma Watson as “the face of Lancôme cosmetics” is Lancôme’s language in the use of the word, “icon”. Lancome has made the decision for a generation of 20-somethings, that one single 20 year old celebrity is THE ‘icon of her generation’. The definition of the word “icon” is, in this instance, meant to be “a sign or representation that stands for its object by virtue of a resemblance or analogy to it.“ What about all the other 20 year old public figures who act as icon’s in their own right to other people…it’s completely subjective and offensive to impose that language on an entire age bracket. Essentially, in using this language, Lancôme is announcing that this 20-year old woman, who isn’t yet old enough to drink alcohol legally in the United States, and who is still attending university, is qualified to act as a representative of all the 20 year old women in the world …who buy Lancôme cosmetics. My objection was aimed at Lancome , not at Emma, and was about the labeling of ANY INDIVIDUAL 20 year old as an icon of anything. I also posted that the real aim of the Lancome advertisers was to find a popular and frequently Googled public figure with symmetrical features and no skeletons in her closet, which was successfully accomplished and I gave Lancome a ‘thumbs up’ for their efforts. Personally, I’ve used and loved Lancome cosmetics for 25 years, and will continue to do so regardless of their choice of “icon(s)”. On another note, since you brought it up, yes, I also believe that there isn’t a thing in the world that a 20-year old girl (or boy) could tell me, and frankly, the only advice I would seek from my “neighborhood twenty year old”, would be where to find a 45 year old woman with whom I could discuss the things we’ve learned since we’ve grown out of our 20s and grown into the still firm and relatively unwrinkled 40s where we are wiser, calmer, and are leaders and mentors in our communities….leaders and mentors, by the way, to most 20-somethings. Maybe Lancome should pick one of their loyal 40-something customers as the “icon of the 40-something generation”…my bet says they’ll see an increase in their profits.

Amanda you are so right. We shouldn’t test cosmetics on animals. Instead, we should test them on infants because in the event that they get harmed by the lipstick, they will be so young they’d never remember it happening.

To Nicole…………..”There’s nothing wrong with animal testing. If it works, it works.
To be honest, it disappoints me to see that people are still making a big deal out of it”.

Are you serious? It’s really a shame that you’re such a heartless uneducated being on this earth. It makes me sick how people like you can actually feel as if there is not one thing wrong with animal testing. If you knew what these animals have to go through everyday such as bleach and different types of chemicals being poured into their eyes while their eyelids are forced open etc., you wouldn’t be making such a rude inconsiderate statement pertaining to the testing on animals and if you do in fact know the truth about what is truly done to these animals then you are one miserable heartless individual. People that don’t care for the welfare of animals are the types of people that you see on the news everyday killing people. If you can’t see the unethicality of it, you’ve got some serious issues.
Seriously, go take a few minutes of your precious time to educate yourself on animal testing and the fact that science has evolved to a point where all as we need is a computer. The very best products I’ve used are cruelty free and believe me before that I used animal tested products before I knew animal testing was taking place. I immediately stopped once I was educated about it.
Stop being so selfish and think about the feelings of other beings on this earth besides yourself. And since you think it’s “no big deal”, maybe you should go volunteer to have your eyelids held open with burning chemicals being pourn into your eyes and have chemicals poured all over your skin until it eats through until you have nothing but sores all over your body. That’s not a big deal is it?
