Oprah Winfrey’s Hair Stylist: Over 25 Years of Cuts, Curls and Conditioning

When stylist Andre Walker reached out to Oprah Winfrey in 1985, he knew he had to be bold. So the Chicago salon owner sent the up-and-coming talk show hostess a note, simply stating, “I’m dying to get my hands on your hair.” His honesty worked: she hired him, and he’s kept her hair looking healthy ever since. “I’m happiest with the [looks] that she’s been happiest with,” Walker shares in the April issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. “For her 50th birthday, we did a short, choppy look with a bit of a flip. She often looks back and says, ‘I really love that hairstyle.’ ” However, there have been some not-so-happy hair moments in Winfrey’s past. “She also reminds me of the styles that weren’t so great,” Walker admits. “But in my defense: It was the ’80s!” To keep Winfrey’s locks lush on a regular basis, Walker avoids using blow dryers or irons on her hair more than three times per week. “Lately, I’ve been doing ponytails to stretch the time between blow dries,” he shares. “With a little height on the top, a pony can look very polished.” And his cardinal hair care rule? “Condition. Condition. Condition,” he says. “Whether you think you need it or not, use a conditioner every time you shampoo, and slather on a thick hair mask once a week. Restoring moisture to the hair is really important to help repair dry ends and add shine.” For more on Winfrey’s hair, check out the April issue of O, on newsstands March 15 or go to oprah.com. –Kate Hogan

That’s nice to hear! Oprah looks great on The April Issue of O Magazine! I like The Other PHOTO as well!

For years, I thought Oprah’s hair was fake until Chris Rock ended up on her show promoting Good Hair and he ran his fingers through her hair! Shocking – it was all hers, everything. Her hair is so long, and thick and healthy looking. Her stylist has done a fantastic job.

I believe in Oprah’s truth about her hair and so many other things, BUT, I wish she would be more truthful about her magazine cover’s for O. It is so obvious they are retouched as far as her weight is concerned. Just be real Oprah. Give the rest of us someone to truly believe in.

What magazine cover model doesn’t get retouched? I mean who wants to look fat on the cover of a magazine? Believe in yourself that always seems to work :)
Oprah’s hair always looks so great!! I know her hairdresser came out with his own line of hair care I would love to get some!!

No doubt it is her real hair. Rich as Oprah is, do you think it would be any less? When you have all the money you need at your disposal, you will always look your best.

- Oprah’s hair stylist for over 20 years, dishes the dirt on Oprah’s hair. | on

[...] In the newest issue of O magazine, Oprah dedicates a whole feature to her longtime hairstylist Andre Walker, who dishes about coiffing the talk show hostess-with-the-mostess for the last 25-plus years. Walker goes into detail about “the styles that weren’t so great” (read: the bigger eighties-era poufs) and his tips for keeping Winfrey’s hair TV camera-ready, including, “Condition. Condition. Condition. Whether you think you need it or not, use a conditioner every time you shampoo, and slather on a thick hair mask once a week.” [People StyleWatch] [...]

MSWIN you are deluded! Some of us love our natural locks with its distinctive curl and texture, recognizing the beauty of “nappy” hair as you call it. Look a little closer at that natural mane and you will see beauty, curl, texture, history, strength and pride. Not everyone requires someone else’s dead hair, chemically straightened hair, extensions or perms to define our beauty. For those who do, to each her own. We are all beautiful, because we just can’t help it.
