Madonna and Jean Paul Gaultier: Fashion’s 26-Year-Old Love Affair

With a new collaboration popping up every day, few designer-celebrity partnerships withstand the test of time. An exception to the rule is Jean Paul Gaultier, who, with a traveling exhibit and corresponding tome, reveals a lifelong liaison between style and pop culture. Did you know that the designer catapulted to fame in the late ’70s with a collection inspired by Grease? Or that before dressing stars like Rihanna and Nicole Kidman, he played wardrobe stylist to Kurt Cobain, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Cameo? Exhibit curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot tells PEOPLE that Gaultier pulls inspiration from television, film, music and yes, real people. It’s this very aesthetic that upset fashion traditionalists so many years ago. “He destroys the notion of elegance. It’s street fashion that I see all the time outside the windows of my atelier,” designer Claude Montana lamented to PEOPLE in 1985. A year later, Madonna first wore Gaultier’s designs to the premiere of Desperately Seeking Susan, and a legendary partnership was born. The duo went on to collaborate on costumes for the pop sensation’s Blonde Ambition tour in 1990, the Confessions tour in 2006 and countless other occasions. Footage from the 1985 film premiere foreshadows their mutual success. A reporter asks, “What do you think of the way Madonna is dressed tonight?” The crowd roars with overwhelming approval. –Justine Harman

Which ‘Sucker Punch’ Premiere Dress Ruled?

London Premiere of Sucker Punch

The red carpet read like a runway at the premiere of Sucker Punch in London’s Leicester Square Wednesday night, as the movie’s stars stepped out in a variety of delectable dresses. Vanessa Hudgens looked stunning in a draped Alberta Ferretti gown, while Carla Gugino brightened up the carpet with her bold, flirty blue number. Emily Browning kept things classic in black Azzaro, while Abbie Cornish, who also chose Alberta Ferretti, opted to go neutral in a floor-length, off-the-shoulder frock. Jena Malone mastered metallics with her springy, floral Juan Carlos Obando knee-length dress, and Jamie Chung spiced things up by rocking the latest trend, neon, in bright pink Dolce & Gabbana. The ladies all looked lovely, but we want to know whose look you liked the most! –Kim Peiffer

Carrie Ann Inaba Engaged: Get the Details on Her Ring!

Working on Dancing with the Stars, Carrie Ann Inaba is surrounded by glitz and glam, so beau Jesse Sloan knew he had to make her engagement ring extra special. “Jesse came in a few months ago,” Ann Mangini of Santa Monica’s Rafinity jewelers tells PEOPLE. “He had a very clear idea of ring style and diamond cut: princess cut in a clean platinum mounting.” As they worked to design the ring, Mangini presented him with several different sparklers, and Sloan ultimately selected the 2½-carat, D-color, princess-cut diamond he presented to his girlfriend of two years Thursday morning on Live with Regis and Kelly. But there’s more to the gem than meets the eye. “Since the ring was so very simple, for a little flair I suggested we set both his and Carrie Ann’s birthstones hidden on the inside of the ring,” Mangini says. “[It's] a Rafinity signature detail and a way to symbolically join the happy couple.” So while not visible to the eye, Inaba’s birthstone, garnet, and Sloan’s birthstone, which happens to be diamond, are both “artfully” embedded in the ring, as well. Though Sloan was secretive about his big purchase — and played it very cool when he proposed to his longtime love on live television  — he was definitely thrilled about the whole ordeal. Says Mangini, “He was the picture of a handsome excited-to-ask-his-girl-to-marry-him gentleman!” –Kate Hogan

Rachel Zoe Protégé Brad Goreski Gets His Own Bravo Show!

Brad Goreski
Mark Savage/Startraks

When Brad Goreski and Rachel Zoe parted ways last year, we worried we’d never see the adorable, bespectacled male stylist in the spotlight again. But Wednesday, Bravo announced plans for a new show centered on Goreski’s life in the fashion world, appropriately titled It’s a Brad Brad World. Chatting with PEOPLE Wednesday night at the Bravo upfronts in Los Angeles, Goreski said that flying solo as a stylist was scary at first. “It’s always kind of a nerve-wracking experience when you make such a big change,” he confessed. “I was actually happy where I was, but it was time for me to claim … my space and just kind of listen to my own voice and go, ‘You know what? I think I actually want to try this for myself.’” And while he was ready for a change, the 34-year-old knows he wouldn’t be where he is today without his mentor, new mom Zoe. “She was very maternal with me from the beginning,” he shared. “She taught me to always be kind.” And, of course, Zoe passed off lots (and lots!) of her fashion wisdom. “I learned how to get clothes really, really fast,” he said. “You don’t always have a week to prep something … sometimes you have 24 hours. [And] she just taught me so much about the styling world, and how to be a better stylist, and I’m forever grateful to her for that.” Look for Goreski’s show on Bravo in the near future. –Reporting by Melody Chiu

Hilary Duff Goes Back to Blonde

Another week, another hair change for Hilary Duff! The starlet switched up her look yet again this week — just days after debuting bangs — stepping out in Los Angeles with light blonde locks. In late February, Duff dyed her hair brown, adding feathers to give it a funky twist, but apparently, the switch was short lived. The singer-actress has flip-flopped her look quite a bit in recent years: though she darkened her do in September, she was blonde for most of winter. And while she was a tow-headed bride — she married hockey star Mike Comrie in August — she’s been known to really get in touch with her darker side, choosing a deep brown hue for a period in 2006. Luckily, Duff is the type who can seemingly pull of any hair color, but we want to know what you think.

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Penn Badgley Models for H&M’s Fashion Against AIDS

Penn Badgley could make a paper sack look good, but he’s really working his sharp features — and his philanthropic side — in a new campaign for H&M‘s 2011 Fashion Against AIDS collection. Launching April 26, the unisex line features coats, T-shirts, jumpsuits, hoodies, accessories and more ($5-$149), all sold to benefit youth HIV/AIDS projects around the world. Though designed without gender in mind, the clothes are “like a blank slate and you bring your own … style,” Badgley says in the clip above. “If you wear it with confidence, it becomes very masculine or feminine.” H&M is donating 25 percent of proceeds from sales of the collection to Designers Against AIDS; the collaboration has raised more than $5.9 million since its inception in 2007. “It’s easy to forget when you’re insulated in a country like America that [AIDS] exists here, and that it’s not just this far away problem,” Badgley says. “I think a lot of people, especially young people, forget. They just don’t think about it. I know I didn’t before.” Stars including Selma Blair, Ginnifer Goodwin and Twilight‘s Nikki Reed are joining Badgley in the 2011 campaign. “The more awareness the better,” Badgley says, “and the safer we can all be.” –Kate Hogan
