Helena Bonham Carter’s Style: Like Mother, Like Daughter?

No one really likes to credit their parents with their fashion decisions. But perhaps when you’re known for kooky offbeat choices (for instance, different colored shoes at the Golden Globes earlier this year) it might actually help to point the finger at someone. So, when PEOPLE scratched the surface with The King’s Speech actress Helena Bonham Carter over a coffee in a north London cafe, the Oscar nominee admitted her mother Elena could have been instrumental in her style choices. “Maybe unconsciously — because she’s obviously an individual,” the 44-year-old laughed. “She’s always had color and she’s got flamboyance. Maybe subconsciously I did pick something up.” The mother-of-two children (with director Tim Burton) added, “Mum’s half-Spanish and she used to dress me in flamenco dresses when I was little. Now I realize I have lots of things about frills. I did my own jean thing which was all about frills. Mum’s always saying ‘it’s exactly what I’d have worn in my youth.’ You always think you made your own self, but who knows.” Read more from the interview with Bonham Carter in this week’s PEOPLE, on newsstands now. – Simon Perry

EXCLUSIVE: Tim Gunn to Write a ‘Fashion Bible’ as Second Book

Even the most serious fashionista can get stuck in a fashion rut, but Tim Gunn is coming to the rescue with his new book, Tim Gunn’s Fashion Bible: The Fascinating History of Everything in Your Closet. The Project Runway co-host and style guru is taking a witty look at the world of fashion, with each chapter covering an item of clothing from its earliest incarnation to the present day — everything from shoes to underwear. The book also provides answers to common fashion questions with tips and tricks on style. “Fashion is fun and thrilling — and it’s something that concerns everyone who wears clothing, not just an elite crew in midtown Manhattan,” Gunn said in statement. “Every item of clothing means something, usually a lot of somethings.  By pointing out what those things are, I hope this book will delight readers and magically transform their cluttered closets into world of wonders.” This is Gunn’s second book, coming as the follow-up to his New York Times bestseller, Gunn’s Golden Rules, but we have a while to wait before we can actually read his advice — the book won’t hit shelves until Fall 2012. Tell us: Are you excited to read Tim Gunn’s new book?–Kim Peiffer

Forget Fashion Week — leave it to Rihanna to turn the U.K.’s biggest night in music into an impromptu fashion show! Kicking off a one-woman style show at Tuesday night’s Brit Awards, the singer was radiant on the red carpet in a hand-painted Dior Haute Couture confection. Then, to accept her award for best international female solo artist, she slipped into a silk carnation-embellished Oscar de la Renta gown. Never one to end on a quiet note, the S&M singer also strutted her stuff onstage in a theatrical, rosette-adorned frock and a semi-sheer body suit. One thing that didn’t change? Her sleek new fiery red bob. We think she sizzles in all four looks, but want your opinion. Tell us: Which of Rihanna’s looks is your favorite? Justine Harman

Our favorite place to spend time was in Epcot Center at the Morocco exhibition. So I did do ‘em.” How long does Vanessa expect her new look to last? “I think a week,” she said. As for the fashion show itself, the actress, who took in the presentation with Chace Crawford, Wyclef Jean and Keri Hilson, couldn’t have enjoyed herself more. “I loved it,” she said. “I need so many of the pieces…I thought it was stunning.” –Jeffrey Slonim

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones Support Michael Kors’s 30th Anniversary Show

Catherine Zeta-Jones has not one, but two special Michaels in her life — her husband Michael Douglas and her go-to designer Michael Kors. So, of course, she would turn up at Kors’s 30th anniversary runway show with her recovering husband in tow to show their combined support from the front row. Both decked out in Michael Kors, Zeta-Jones gushed of the clothes, “I loved the collection. Sometimes it’s difficult to express.” But Douglas had no such trouble weighing in on his own state of being, telling PEOPLE he feels “pretty good” as he scooted backstage with his wife on his arm. Other fans at the show included Debra Messing, Angie Harmon and Rene Russo. “I loved it,” added Anjelica Houston, who also spoke about the presence of her longtime friend Douglas. “I know, isn’t that great. We’ve all been rooting for him so much. I’m so proud of him.” The show itself had the sparkle and flow of the disco era, recalling vintage Halston, with throbbing ’70s tunes such as “I Feel Love,” playing on the soundtrack. “The colors were smashing,” said Bette Midler, who was also in the front row. The disco era fashion also brought back memories for Midler, who admitted to having a less refined version of the look the first time around. “Whooooh, big time,” she said. “It was terrifying. No, back then, I wore clothes that were a bit more eccentric.” – Jeffrey Slonim
