24 Hour Trend Alert: Golden Gowns

Kim Kardashian, Heidi Klum and Noomi Rapace Choose Gold Gowns

Talk about gilding the lily! It was all about gold on Sunday night at the Grammy Awards in L.A. and the BAFTA Awards in London, Kim Kardashian, Heidi Klum and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo‘s Noomi Rapace shone in the metallic hue. But blinging babes beware: A gown in get-noticed gold is not for the faint of heart. “They tailored it to where my whole butt wouldn’t fit into it. The designers had to come in and fix the whole thing!” Kardashian lamented to Ryan Seacrest of her Kaufman Franco design. Similarly, Klum’s slinky Julien Macdonald design, which she paired with python Christian Louboutins, was an equally fitted column complete with a dare-to-bare slit. Across the pond, BAFTA best actress nominee Rapace channeled bad girl Lisbeth Salander in a curve hugging, corseted Givenchy Haute Couture gown and studded, metal belt. Looks like fierce fashion has new golden standard! Tell us: Are you bold enough for gold? Justine Harman

Jessica Simpson: Accidental Fashion Mogul

Jessica Simpson's Billion Dollar Clothing Empire
Ruven Afanador for New York magazine

Jessica Simpson is fashion’s newest billion dollar baby — but did she mean to be? Simpson will continue growing her empire this year by adding a ready-to-wear collection and a line of career separates, which are expected to push sales for the company to over a billion dollars. “I never thought I’d be some fashion mogul!,” Simpson tells New York in the magazine’s spring fashion issue, where the cover girl rocks huge, teased hair and bare shoulders. To put that number in context, the magazine explains that Simpson’s company is doing roughly the same volume in sales as designers like Michael Kors. Simpson says that her brand is so popular because she makes the line for everyday women and keeps the focus away from herself. ”What you really need is your basics for every type of person,” she says. “When it comes to other celebrity brands, I think a lot of people do a great job, but it can’t be all about them. Everybody doesn’t want to just look like the celebrity, because they can’t. They just want one element of that style.” Her business manager, David Levin, puts the original idea behind her fashion lines a little more directly, telling New York, “A girl could go to the shopping mall with her mother and she’d have a great new outfit and still have some money left for lunch at McDonald’s. She can look like Jessica Simpson, smell like Jessica Simpson, and she can afford it.” Read more at nymag.com.Tell us: What do you think of Jessica Simpson’s billion dollar fashion empire?Kim Peiffer

Bridget Marquardt New Costume LineJason Merritt/Getty

Nicki Minaj’s wild-at-heart ensembles always keep fans on their toes — and Grammy night was no exception as the rapper prowled the red carpet in head-to-toe leopard. “This outfit is a masterpiece by Givenchy and what they made for me is a miraculous piece of lioness meets her cub meets fierce-osity meets fabulosity meets fashionista meets runway meets everything, darling!” Nicki told Ryan Seacrest on E! Live from the Red Carpet. Nicki was just as enthusiastic when she talked to PEOPLE on the red carpet, saying, “I saw it, I loved it, I had to have it.” She rocked the wildcat print “Pardalis” silk satin dress with matching leopard-print belt, gloves, leggings and shoes, and topped off her look with a hairstyle that would give the Bride of Frankenstein a run for her money, featuring an ebony-streaked bleached bouffant accented with leopard spots. And while the Grammy-nominated artist (for best rap performance by a duo or group) may not have walked away with a win on Sunday night, she certainly succeeded in grabbing everyone’s attention.
