Jessica Simpson: Accidental Fashion Mogul

Jessica Simpson's Billion Dollar Clothing Empire

Jessica Simpson is fashion’s newest billion dollar baby — but did she mean to be? Simpson will continue growing her empire this year by adding a ready-to-wear collection and a line of career separates, which are expected to push sales for the company to over a billion dollars. “I never thought I’d be some fashion mogul!,” Simpson tells New York in the magazine’s spring fashion issue, where the cover girl rocks huge, teased hair and bare shoulders. To put that number in context, the magazine explains that Simpson’s company is doing roughly the same volume in sales as designers like Michael Kors. Simpson says that her brand is so popular because she makes the line for everyday women and keeps the focus away from herself. “What you really need is your basics for every type of person,” she says. “When it comes to other celebrity brands, I think a lot of people do a great job, but it can’t be all about them. Everybody doesn’t want to just look like the celebrity, because they can’t. They just want one element of that style.” Her business manager, David Levin, puts the original idea behind her fashion lines a little more directly, telling New York, “A girl could go to the shopping mall with her mother and she’d have a great new outfit and still have some money left for lunch at McDonald’s. She can look like Jessica Simpson, smell like Jessica Simpson, and she can afford it.” Read more at nymag.com.Tell us: What do you think of Jessica Simpson’s billion dollar fashion empire?Kim Peiffer

Guess she isn’t as dumb as people make her out to be. Go Jessica!

nobody is buying her line of clothing, unless it is on sale, therefore king PP is paying her for having DD’s, her only talent! watch out world, the dumdums are taking over.

Hanna – get over yourself. We understand that she isn’t sitting down with a sketch pad designing the clothing. She probably does have final say about what goes into her collections, and that’s not nothing. Rather than accusing people of thinking too much of her, why don’t you admit that you hate her for some random, irrational reason and YOU are selling her short?

There will always be many different opinions of Jessica Simpson…mine is positive. She is just a girl living a dream many of us dream. Congrats to her and wishing her even more success.

Hopefully her clothes line will keep her so busy so will never sing/act again…..and out of the news!!

WOW! Some people on this thread is really evil spirited and negative. I would have thought by now that everyone would have realize that the dumb blonde was just an act. This girl is smart and by her working her tush off to make a billion dollar company proves just that. She understands that not everyone is a size 2. When high priced fashion designers get that idea out there head(and stop selling that superficial air brushed image to young girls) they will also increase their profits. Jessica Simpson makes clothes for real people and they look good! simple math for making big bucks! Kudos to you Jess! And you all need to stop being so negative!! That is not a good look and it is NOT cute!

Jessica needs to come clean and admit that she only license her name to the fashion company (Nine West) that makes the Jessica Simpson Collection. She’s not even worth ($250M) a quarter billion. She makes about $20M a year licensing her name. This article is a misrepresentation of Jessica’s contribution to the fashion industry. She’s no more a fashion designer than Jennifer Lopez. By the way, this is a copycat of the Jennifer Lopez hype as well. J.Lo is not worth a billion dollars, not even $250M. These magazines make up the most factually inaccurate stories about the celebrities and their “extraordinary” success. Do you really think these stars design their own fragrances? Give me a break! Even Jessica admits, in the article, she didn’t expect this much success for the affordable fashion line. The truth is, the fashion company that design and make the clothes, is worth a billion … not Jessica. Talk about a blatant display of propaganda.

Vince Camunto (Co-Founder of Nine West) is the actual designer for the Jessica Simpson Collection.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a major fan of Jessica, I just think the truth should be revealed.
I hope she doesn’t want a Jennifer Lopez fiasco. I remember when the press revealed that Tommy Hilfiger’s younger brother was that actual designer for J.Lo by Jennifer Lopez.

FYI: A couple years ago, Britney Spears was the first celebrity to create a billion dollar brand. Just before her, it was Jennifer Lopez, P. Diddy, Michael Jackson, and Elizabeth Taylor. Before all of them, it was the King of Rock and Roll … Elvis Presley. Give me a break! This NY article is nothing but a waste of paper and ink.

You commentors are so funny. The COMPANY is worth almost 1 billion, not Jessica herself. After everyone is paid (designers, marketers, retailers, buyers, etc.), then Jessica gets her piece for tacking her name on the brand. Her net worth probably boils down to about 14 million after that. Not bad, but certainly not as high as people are making it out to be.

Thank you Star for making things mroe clear to the unsuspecting folks!

Amy, my comment was for the people gushing about what a “great designer” she is and how “she knows what other women looks good in” etc etc. like she was the brain of the company!

I don’t hate her either…I think she is cute and adorable…just not a “great fashion designer”. I was just provoked to make that comment coz I think it’s an insult to the actual creators by giving her all the credit!
