Rumor Patrol: Gisele Bundchen Never Called Sunscreen 'Poison'

Gisele Sunscreen Denial
INF

Gisele Bündchen is firing back at published reports that quoted her as saying she refuses to wear sunscreen. While promoting her skincare line Sejaa in her native Brazil, the supermodel reportedly claimed of SPF products: “I cannot put this poison on my skin. I do not use anything synthetic.” Reports went on to quote her as saying that her alternative is simply avoiding going out at times in the day when the sun is strongest–advice that cancer experts quickly shot down as ineffective. But a rep for Bündchen says that a misunderstanding is to blame. “They misquoted her due to a language barrier,” the rep tells PEOPLE. “Gisele would never say not to use sunscreen because she has family members who have had skin cancer.” So what did Gisele intend to express? “She simply stated that her all natural skincare line does not include an SPF product,” the rep continued. “She followed that line of questions saying she tried to stay out of the sun when it is the strongest between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.” And yes, Gisele does use sunscreen–just not harsh formulations. “When using sunscreens she selects ones that are free of parabens, oxybenzone, PABA, and retinyl palmitate,” says the rep. “She buys her sunscreen at Whole Foods, so she can find ones that are free of harsh chemicals. She says, ‘Of course I put on sun block. I don’t want to look like a shrimp!'”–Charlotte Triggs

So glad THAT’S cleared up! I was thisclose to getting rid of all my sunscreen!!

KRN on

She’s still dumb.

Cindy on

There really are a large number of sunscreens that I would refuse to wear. That doesn’t mean I do not use sunscreen.
So agree with Gisele.

Jennifer on

So her shameless self promotion of her new skin care line flopped?
What language barrier…isn’t she from Brazil?

Jellybeans on

Would they please give this woman a break? It’s a real shame that having an opinion and standards is a bad thing yet everyone feels bad for ANNOYING
bitter baby mama Bridget Monyahan who won’t let her son eat snacks and refused to give her son his dads last name because he didn’t want to be with her!

Giulianna on

I read the article on the Brazilian magazine and she never said poison. Things defenitely go lost in translation. Everybody have the freedom to express there opnion. People have to calm down a little.

denise on

She is such a weirdo………

Amy on

I’m sorry, but ” refused to give her son his dads last name because he didn’t want to be with her”? Perhaps she chose to give her son her name because he’s being raised mostly by her and she isn’t married to Tom Brady, therefore she doesn’t have his name either? Saying “refused” implies that you know ANYTHING about the reasoning behind their choice. I don’t find Bridget Moynahan bitter, although who could blame her if she were?

WriterWriter on

I’ll do it for her: Sunscreen is poison. Not only do the chemicals in it leech into the skin and the blood stream, sunscreen prevents the skin from doing what it is designed to do; manufacture vitamin D.

Lack of vitamin D is critical for prevention of a wide range of cancers (which, if they were prevented would put a lot of those “cancer experts” out of their jobs), as well as from MS and osteoporosis.

The best course of action is to gradually expose the body to sun. If your skin is very pale, then 5 minutes a day for a couple weeks, gradually increasing.

A tan is not necessary but exposure to sun IS. Sunscreen is poison and if Ms Bundchen said so, it’s because she’s right.

WriterWriter on

UPDATE: Lack vitamin D is implicated in the development of a wide variety of cancers…. as well as in higher risks for MS and osteoporosis.

Dumb??? Are you crazy? She is one of the smartest business woman there is. The girl breaks in $30 million every year. Yeah she is gorgeous but that alone is not enough and besides there are plenty of pretty girls from where she comes from. She is a savvy business woman.

suzy diamond on

What does it matter whether she said it or not. She’s the one that will suffer the consequences. As long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else! It’s her body, her responsibility!

Marlys on

In regards to a previous posting from “Amy”, the couple is married and have been married since 2009. Typically celebrities are advised not to change their names.

Lisa on

Gisele,
STFU and model.

Jenifer on

Marlys…Amy was referrign to Tom Brady not being married to Bridget Moynahan. Thus Bridget giving her son her last name and not Tom’s.

I find it shameful she has to “apologize” to the media and all you bitter people in the first place!!! now she can’t have opinions??? who cares what she says or does! its her life! I read way more offensive things coming from you people than I have ever heard coming from her, so chill. and no she is not a weirdo. Go on any green website/blog, they all talk/think like this.

Chrissy on

Gisele got lost in translation. She is exuberant when explaining things. She does not mean things so literal. come on she isn’t a Harvard Scholar, nor is she trying to be! Give her a break! I read the Brazilian interviews where this first came from (no Daily mail is not the original source) and guess what. she never said this! She said she wanted a natural product so therefore she didn’t intend to put any chemical (or “poison*) as the media proclaims, SPF into her natural product. She is still waiting to find a all natural SPF, and until then this product is not used for sun protection. That is WHAT she said. There are some really bored people in the media, lol.

sean on

I still think her face looks like a foot!

Jackie on

I second you WriterWriter! The dumb people are those who don’t do their own research into what is in their products. If people did they probably would not use 79% of the products or foods they bring into their home.

Let me be another voice to second your opinion of SPF: IT IS POISON!

Chrissy: I agree with everything you wrote.

Chrissy on

cut down her looks,words..etc…you guys are all more offensive than she ever has been.

It’s always the same thing. Gisele makes an offensive, ignorant comment and then her rep comes in to save her by telling us all that she was “misquoted”. Giving birth, breastfeeding, Tom & Bridget’s son. It’s getting old now.

no whats getting old by now is the media’s fabrication of her words, actually making it seem she says/does anything offensive. Hardly!! I can list 100 celebs right now who are far more offensive.

It seems like Gisele forgot about her breast-implants… She is one of those delusional people who will believe their own lies… Don’t know how Tom withstands her.

Let’s not forget, Gisele could say or do something nice and it won’t get reported on. Misinterpert her words and voila we got a media frenzy. Just what the doctor (media) ordered.

polkadoctor on

Yes, using sunscreen prevents the body to naturally make vitamin D. HOWEVER, there are SUPPLEMENTS for Vitamin D. It is safer to take vitamin D supplements rather than NOT protecting yourself from SKIN CANCER. It’s the smart trade-off if you ask me.

I didn’t know being a model qualified her to give medical advice. Gisele is always giving ill-informed opinions. Wasn’t she the one who said breast-feeding your child should be a law. Now she’s an expert in dermatology? She clearly thinks she’s smarter than she really is. A little too full of herself!

tiffanya on

Has anyone else noticed she’s really aging and losing her looks? She got so thin so quickly after the baby that it’s made her lose a lot of the collagen in her face. WOW. Shocked at this picture.

I view sunscreen as a poison. I start burning and turn red 5 minutes after using it. I am allergic to it. It’s amazing how difficult it can be to find skin care products that do not have it. I no longer attend skin care or makeup parties. I won’t let anyone in a department store or a mall kiosk near me with their products. I am tired of being told products are hypoallergenic and that i couldn’t possibly be allergic while i burn and turn red. Kudos to Giselle for working to develop a line of skin care products that I could actually use.

Ramona B. on

I find it very interesting that celebrities–most notably famous women like Gisele–in droves, have adopted, and perhaps unwittingly, promoted ‘greener’ and eco-friendlier lifestyles. However, while that is admirable, people who go ‘green’ generally avoid commercial care products and cosmetics and their questionable ingredients–as Gisele’s statement references above. Why then are these women endorsing the very products that they refuse to put on their bodies? Gisele, and the like, will not apply, rub, or spray these products on their gorgeous bodies, but they will, however, endorse the same products in exchange for millions of dollars–Gisele was Max Factor’s spokesmodel just last year. Does this make much sense?

Good for her! life is way too short to worry about what other people think. they will always have opinions, and they will always tear you down. No one’s opinion of you should supercede your own, ever.

You ever notice that all those who complain and start rumors are usuall…y homely, old , and overweight jealous people? Who cares if Gisele said it was poison or not.. it probably is.. most everything we eat drink and put into our bodies on the market is poison. Congrats on being able to clear it up!!

Bitter in Dallas on

Im sorry but Im pretty much in the same situation as Bridget. She was preganant when Tom left her and that is a time when you really need the father to be there. He did not welcome his son into this world regardless if they were no longer together. And then he wants his last name on his son’s.Well he has a son now he can give his last name to.And Gisele wasted no time taking over that baby when Bridget being a new mom just wanted to be able to bond with her baby without another woman being disrespectful of that. You see she makes sure no one gets close to her child.I went through all the same.My daughter has both our last names with mine first and he was trying to get it reversed. He lost out on that.

Always cracks me up that users here call her dumb yet they seem to lack simple reading comprehension. First she has never told ppl what to do, she’s simply expressing her OPINION. Secondly, being Portuguese myself she was misquoted. What she said was in fact lost in translation. Thirdly, there are many natural sunscreens out there, so just because someone doesn’t use the standard chemical sunblock doesn’t mean they are against sunblock altogether.
