Helena Bonham Carter: Why I Break All the Fashion Rules

01/26/2011 at 02:30 PM ET

Helena Bonham Carter on Her Golden Globes Dress and Shoes
Zuma

The King’s Speech star — and Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actress — Helena Bonham Carter is the first to admit she’s made a few fashion mistakes on the red carpet but that’s not stopping her from dressing up in non-traditional styles. “Sometimes I get it right and I sometimes I get it wrong,” Bonham Carter, 44, tells PEOPLE. “But fashion is all about having fun. I think fashion has been hijacked by the fashion industry creating rules on what one should wear and I feel like breaking the mold and seeing that the world won’t crumble.” Known for her eclectic fashion choices, Bonham Carter raised a few eyebrows by attending the Golden Globe Awards wearing one red and one green shoe simply because she wanted to. “Why not wear mismatching shoes? Who says we can’t? I was just having fun,” says Bonham Carter. “For me, fashion is all about fantasy and putting unlikely things together. That’s what I love. I genuinely love dressing up.” One person Bonham Carter praises is Lady Gaga for her daring fashion choices. “I love the way she dresses. She’s like a work of art,” she says. “Anybody who is inventive, different or has fun like her, I love and admire. I’m amazed that she’s able to stand up in some of those shoes she wears.” When asked what it’s like to be compared to the “Bad Romance” singer, Bonham Carter demurs, saying “I feel honored to be compared to her but I would probably be called Lady Haha. She’s fantastic.” So what can we expect on the red carpet at the Kodak Theatre come Feb. 27? “Maybe I will wear the exact same [Vivienne Westwood] dress I wore at the Golden Globes but with matching shoes,” she says with a big laugh. “Or put the shoes on my head!” – Paul Chi

She is brilliant! For many years I have been using unmatching color shoes! Actually at my wedding last summer, my sister tried it, and was so cool and fun to see! I hate people to tell me what to do, specially about clothing and fashion. there are already to many rules in this world we don’t need also on what we wear, as long don’t break the rules of decency.

Lauren on

I think her style is mostly horrible..female equivalent to Johnny Depp, in acting style and fashion.

Alyssa on

I think there is a difference between dressing rebellious and edgy and having bad taste…this dress does not flatter her body whatsoever.

I think she looks fabolous, mismatched shoes or not. Who cares, anyway? I mean, I do see a lot of people in mismatched shoes, so why on earth should it be a big deal if she wears mismatched shoes too? She’s only human, y’know.

Presentation does matter–let’s just face the facts. However, if Helenea Bonham Carter wants to go around looking crazy, that’s her prerogative…

While I do not enjoy her clothes, What I find most objectionable about H B-C is her hair. It looks like a rats nest. It is as if she slept with it unbound for a month and never brushed it. It appears to me that she just enjoys bucking convention. If you look at her roles in movies in the last 15 years you will see this. The Kings Speech is the first main stream role she has acted in a long time and they had to twist her arm to get her to do it.

By making such a (mis)fashion statement, then HBC is more popular than before.

Sarah on

I love her; she dresses like a kid playing dress up. She appears to happy with her look; so good luck to her. I never actually thought of wearing odd shoes but why not?

Mary on

Fashion should be fun, experimental, why not! Have fun – look at the buzz about HBC’s outfit…LOL

Sara on

I love HBC, she always looks so FIERCE doing her own thing. Why not wear different colored shoes and an elaborate dress because it’s fun? Too many people, stars or not, play it safe and boring. Rock on Helena :)

Laurie on

I love Helena and I love that she gives a great big raspberry to convention … she is brilliant and an original … go Helena!

s on

she looks a little weird but it really isn’t that bad of a look..not everyone could do that

Denise on

Finally, someone in Hollywood who is honest! I find her fashion choices extremely odd…but after this article I look forward to her eccentric style at the Oscars!!

KC on

But don’t you understand…in a town of perfection, runway styles, and amazing bodies she is simply making a statement, it has nothing to do with the dress. She is doing it because no one else will, which I too admire. Ya know…she has guts, in a town full of self absorbed shallow people it’s awesome to see.

Kristen on

I love her style and love watching her on the RC. She is always fierce and fabulous!

KC on

….and HOORAY, for once it is not a “Facebook Only” comment thread!

You people putting Helena down can all just suck it, cause even if you don’t like her looks she is still getting work. She still makes tons of money and she is still with Tim Burton who makes tons of money too. She doesn’t need your approval to live her life. Kudos to her. If putting her down makes you feel better about yourselves, go ahead and say what you want. But she doesn’t care, therefor neither should you.

Bravo Helena!!!! I love that she dresses for HERSELF! She is right. The stuffy idiots who, after the award shows have their own show ripping apart the guests, and naming THEIR favorites? As in Lock Jaw Joan? Give me a break! Fashion is supposed to be fun! Go on, wear white after Labor day, wear black, or red to a wedding, wear bright yellow to a funeral to celelbrate the persons joy! Go on and wear mismatched shoes, different make up on each eye! Live for Goodness sake! have fun! I celebrate her choices! She should not be judged, as no one should. Bravo Helena! Not to mention she is an amazing actress!!!!

Halley on

I love her! She’s an extraordinarily talented actress, and a beautiful woman. She has it exactly right, why does everyone have to follow rules. Why not have a good time? She’s not dressing immodestly, and it doesnt hurt anyone, so I say go for it!

Brooke on

It’s a red carpet event; not a UN summit. I actually look forward to her on a red carpet, just because she is a lot more interesting than other celebrities. She has a sense of humor about herself, and it’s not like everyone doesn’t know she’s a beautiful, albeit eccentric, woman.

Momma Bear on

Fashion quirkiness is fine. But why not wear clothing that at least flatters you? It’s like she could care less about her appearance. If you are nominated for an award, the very least you could do is dress appropriately for the event that is honoring you. Blech!

Eccentric and weird are two different things. Sometimes she’s one, sometimes the other.

Amanda C on

I think she is awesome for stepping out of what HOLLYWOOD deems “fashionable”. I have seen many things go down the runway and I think what the heck was the designer wearing. At least she is true to herself. She wants to dress silly so let her be. She makes great movies, she’s a great actress and I do not think her clothes should make a difference. Whether she is wearing funky clothes or a “Red Carpet Gown” does not make her less of a person or make her not a great actress.

LS Fox on

Are you sure she didn’t do it on purpose? I mean we all remember who was worst dressed. But who was it that was bested dressed??? Get my drift.

I don’t think it was horrible like Cojo mouthed off about. It really suited her.

Clara on

I am and will probably be a fan of her movies, but with fashion she seems to get it all wrong. Why does Gwen Stephani and Lady Gaga seem to get it right and not her? Just my opinion of course.

Don’t care if she wears mis-matched shoes; I thought from this pic that she had them on the wrong feet (left on the right & vice versa) until I realized that she’s standing with her legs crossed.

razzlea on

i think she is a wonderful actress and i like that she doesnt care and is funky.

Jamie on

When all the fashion gurus were quibbling after the Globes, I was praising her to the skies. It was a party with friends. She was dressed for the occasion and having a good time doing it. This is a brilliant actress and a delightful woman. That makes her a total original. We should all take such pleasure in our chosen careers.

Hollie on

At first I thought this was a horrible outfit the mismatched shoe the hair the dress but then I realized who makes up fashion rules? and why are there fashion rules? Sure I would never wear that but it;s HER style. If she wants to dress like this let her.

Nameless on

I don’t care how she looks or how eccentric she is…I think she is real and true to her heart. She may not be grounded but I don’t think she is faking who she is. Do I agree with all her viewpoints – no. Do I actually like what she wears – no. Do I think she is refreshing in a world of cookie cutter actors – most definitely. She is like an unusual black rose and very talented – even if she were wearing a paper bag.

Fashion Fan on

This is obvious that she mismatches for attention (as does Lady Gaga and others). She gets what she is aiming for, good or bad attention. So be it.

Ok…First, I absolutely Love this dress! I think it just makes her look Gorgeous and Natural. It matches her entire style. The shoes were a bit interesting I will agree, but I love her comment on it and I completely agree. It’s crazy that like she states, there are so many rules in fashion…but funny how the fashion industry can break them all of the time, yet if someone else tries, it’s wrong. Helena, you are beautiful and a fashion icon yourself…keep it up girl! Next time wear two different socks!

Brenda on

I actually admire her self confidence. I would never dress like her but I give her kudos for wearing whatever she feels like wearing and not caring about what people might say. To me she is like Whoppi, Cher… I do not expect them to dress any differently than what they usually dress like. Same as Mickey Rourke. Would not expect to see him in a tuxedo and Ferragamo shoes; NEVER!!! Is just their style.

Sarah on

Her outfit is horrendous on anyone but her. This dress defines her a person and an actress! Brilliant!

Aspen Marks on

Break the ‘rules’!! Love it! Time to stop conforming!!!!

Heather on

God forbid we should all be the same. How boring. She’s not a slave to somebody else’s fashion rules, and I say more power to her! You rock, girl.

Jon on

I totally agree with Helena Bonham Carter and what she had to say, that’s nice to hear!

stpattygirl on

I think she looks totally fine! Who cares if she doesn’t dress “like everyone else”. I love that she stays true to herself. She has always received high praise on her work ethic…who cares about the clothes. I bet she is also one that could actually laught at Ricky Gervais jokes! HA!

Tam on

presentation, unfortunately, does matter. More power to her for having fun and dressing how she wants.

jk on

she doesn’t care!! and why should she??? she is a brilliant talented actress that doesn’t buy into the hollywood machine. if she put half a thought into pulling herself together in a “hollywood approved” way she would blow half of the actresses off of the red carpet because she also happens to be stunningly beautiful!

Kim on

Why is it that Lady Gaga is praised for her “fashion forward” style, but she isn’t. So what if she looks messy? Don’t like it, don’t comment on it. She isn’t hurting anyone or causing bodily harm.

It's true on

When people die, is this really what they want to be remembered for? Fashion???

DJ on

Gald to read that I was not the only one who like her outfit at the Golden Globes. It is nice to see someone who can pull it off, have a little wardrobe fun. Sure better than all the beige.champagne colored dresses that were washing out most everyone who wore that evening.

amanda on

I ♥ that woman! i dont care what she wears to an award show! she’s a brilliant actress and I think that’s all that matters. we shouldn’t judge people by what they wear!

Opinionated on

Good for her for not following the herd! She is awesome at what she does and has every right to dress any way she pleases.

Fina on

She looks like a cat chewed her up and then vomited her out. NO CLASS!

L.A. Wisniewski on

I agree that she is rather eccentric, but I also commend her for choosing choice roles in films that are memorable (i.e. Harry Potter, Sweeney Todd, etc.) and reputable. Unlike many other actors, she doesn’t seem to have succumbed to having too much money and getting away with whatever she can. I can specifically recall several actors who are weak and unstable who fall victim to overdosing, committing adultery, etc., I have never read of Ms. Bonham Carter performing any indecent acts. Overall, I admire her sense of uniqueness, and ability to remain sane and private. So, let her dress as she chooses, at least she is not exploiting her children nor committing heinous acts at the expense of others.

Alyssa Lestrange on

I think she is beautiful no matter what. I agree who says you have to be this…or wear that. Be a leader not follower. Wear what you want. Have fun. AND I LOVE her as Bellatrix. BELLA ROCKS! Harry Potter 2 -cant wait.

I love her! She is a very intelligent and talented woman and she deserves praise for not taking fashion too seriously. Too many actresses care more about the clothes they appear in than about the quality of the films they appear in. Fashion should be fun and it should also be kept in perspective. It really is not important!

I just don’t like her. I think she acts the same in all her roles. Bellatrix Lestrange is the quintessence of HBC’s acting style and ability. As for her red carpet style – mismatched shoes are fun, however the dress looks very unflattering on her. I am sure she can do better.

Amanda on

Helena is amazing no matter what. Even if her shoes don’t match!

In an industry that praises thin bodies and a sophisticated wardrobe, I find Helena Bonham Carter to be a breath of fresh hair. She may be very familiar with the worst dressed lists in Hollywood, but the way she dresses is PERFECT for the woman that she is. I embrace her quirkiness and individuality in a business where most people look the same. Good for her!

Natasha on

Who cares? If she wants to be unique, then let her! She’s not killing people with her dress and she doesn’t care what judgmental people think of her that’s why she’s one of the actresses I respect. She’s a great actress and that’s all it matters. Sad that image takes over talent. Be yourself not like others.

I do not understand her fashion choice. She is a beautiful but TINY person with a terrific, compact figure. She should wear simple clingy dresses, ala Anne Hathaway, instead of dresses in bizzare colors that overwhelm her. The same applies to her hair. Messy and choppy is in, which is not particularly attractive, but high volume teasing went out by 1970. If this is her way of fashion rebellion she is doing herself a disservice.

Que9 bos que9 te9 digue?
