Prince William Gives Kate Middleton Princess Diana’s Engagement Ring

Prince William has honored his late mother by giving his new fiancée Kate Middleton the engagement ring that Prince Charles once gave to Princess Diana. “It’s very special to me. As Kate’s very special to me now, it was right to put the two together,” William said as the newly-engaged couple faced the cameras for the first time today. The ring is an oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds. William proposed to Kate on a safari in Kenya in October, but he first asked her father for permission to propose. Michael Middleton said that he and his wife are “absolutely delighted” and “thrilled” by the engagement announcement.The wedding, which will take place in the spring or summer of 2011, is already being heralded as the biggest wedding since Charles and Diana’s. –Nadine Shabeeb

Karyn C: When Prince Charles gave that ring to Diana, he was most likely very much in love with Diana and planning a wonderful future together. They did, after all produce two beautiful sons. That ring simply symbolizes love and a beautiful future together. NOT a marriage that went bust. Congrats to them both for many happy years together

I think it’s a beautiful and sentimental gesture on his part. Sure he could of bought her a new ring, but that one was worn by his mom who he adored and u can’t buy something from someone’s heart. Sure the ring was worn by her and they divorced, but I believe had it been up to Diana they’d of still been married, it’s not the rings fault they got divorced it was old Charles… He was a boy who adored his mom and I believe she’s looking down from heaven giving them both her blessings. I really think that William is a better man then his dad and Kate has been with him for many years, you can see they’re in love, nothing fake here. I just hope the press doesn’t hound this poor girl as they did Diana and let them both live in peace. I wish you all the best that life has to offer , you look like a great couple!!! God Bless!

Some of you make EXCELLENT points. It’s not the fact that Princess Diana’s marriage failed, it’s the fact that it is away to honor his mother. I think it’s beautiful and a way to ensure Princess Diana lives on FOREVER. God Bless the happy new couple

All of us around the world who got up in the wee hours of the morning that day in ’81 to see our flesh and bone Cinderella marry her Prince Charming feel William and Harry are our honorary kids. Its great to see them all grown finding happiness. As beautiful as the ring is and as heartwarming as knowing William is honoring Diana by giving it to Kate I have to agree with some of the previous messages. Its a bittersweet feeling to see that ring again, but things are different. Most importantly, William is NOT Charles. I’m sure Mum is looking down watching over and any bad karma attached to the ring she will take care of. I wish the next King and Queen of England all the happiness in the world, and look forward to once again getting up at the wee hours in the morning to see “my” kid get married.

To respond to Karyn: that ring was a symbol of love, from Prince Charles to Diana….it didn’t last but William was a gift to the two of them, and Harry was too…that ring is a beautiful ring.. as another stated, two stunning women, one stunning ring… no one else deserves to have been able to buy that ring. Diana was the most awesome woman… she still gives to the world.. every day in some way.
