Prince William has honored his late mother by giving his new fiancée Kate Middleton the engagement ring that Prince Charles once gave to Princess Diana. “It’s very special to me. As Kate’s very special to me now, it was right to put the two together,” William said as the newly-engaged couple faced the cameras for the first time today. The ring is an oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds. William proposed to Kate on a safari in Kenya in October, but he first asked her father for permission to propose. Michael Middleton said that he and his wife are “absolutely delighted” and “thrilled” by the engagement announcement. The wedding, which will take place in the spring or summer of 2011, is already being heralded as the biggest wedding since Charles and Diana’s. –Nadine Shabeeb

I hear what y’all are saying about the ring, but I think that fact that Diana has passed that makes it different. I am sure if she was still alive he never would have used that ring.

I so wish Diana was here for this day but I know she is smiling down on her precious baby boy. God Bless them both.

I don’t know Kate but I think she deserves it. She represents class, and elegance. She would not have lasted 8 years with William if it were otherwise.
Also, she has been followed by the media for 8 years and has never shown to be anything but a lady.
Congrats to them both! I think it is wonderful that he gave her his mother’s ring. (Whatever happened with his parents marriage makes no difference.)
The point of the ring is that it was his mother’s, and she is not around to participate in this splendid event so wearing her ring is a beautiful way for the couple to keep her close symbolically.
May their union be blessed by God and may they have a lifetime of happiness!

I don’t think what happened with Diana’s marriage is whats important, I think it’s that it was his mother’s ring (something close to him) and he wanted his future wife to have it. I think it’s sweet.

The ring is not what makes or breaks a marriage. Instead it is a beautiful tribute to his mother – no matter how her marriage ended. I wish these two many years of happiness and only wish that his mother was here to see this day. She would be very proud.

Congratulations to the couple. I was one of the millions who watched his Mother and Father marry!
I hope they can have a private life! Many happy years to them!

Tears fill my eyes knowing that his Mother, Dianna would be so very proud of her look a like son. I was up early to watch the wedding between Prince Charles and Princess Dianna and I will be up early to watch this wedding as well.

To Prince William and Ms. Kate, may you have a lifetime filled with the utmost happiness. God Bless you both.

I think you are so right Zoey and if I were the one receiving it I would be more than honoured by it. We all know how much Prince William loves his Mum. And it looks just as beautiful on Kate as it did on Diana. I have a mini ring of that style cause I loved it so much – not an engagement ring but a gift from my daughter.

Thanks Zoey, you said it perfectly. I am divorced and understand the luck of a failed marriage ring (I sold mine) but since she is gone it is more of an honor to his mother. And she does not seem sad about getting a “used” ring as someone said, huh?

I know I was thrilled to get the ring that both my husband’s mother and grandmother wore when they got married, both of those women had long and happy marriages. However, Diana’s engagement ring doesn’t have happy karma attached to it. Hopefully, Kate and William will be able to turn that karma around and will have a long and happy marriage.
