The Secrets of Natalie Portman’s ‘Black Swan’ Rodarte Tutu — Flaws and All!

Niko Tavernise

Natalie Portman may have glided with ease across the stage for her role as a prima ballerina in the upcoming ballet thriller Black Swan, but it turns out that it was the team behind her tutus that were put to the real challenge! While becoming the first fashion designers to covet a National Art Award from Americans for the Arts recently, Rodarte’s Laura and Kate Mulleavy explained to nymag.com the challenges of creating the intricate costumes for the film. “A tutu is 13 layers of tulle sticking straight out and then it’s over the body, so you can imagine. It’s crazy!” said Laura, who had only seen a ballet costume up close once before the film. The sister-act was introduced to the film’s director, Darren Aronofsky, by Portman–a longtime Rodarte lover–and after that, were brought on board to create looks for the film’s Swan Lake performance. “Building a tutu is one of the lost couture arts. Everyone will know it’s like getting your hand on the prize, like a coveted piece of couture that no one ever gets to see,” Laura explained. “You can’t go rent a tutu. You have to own it…They’re never actually perfect, but from afar, when you’re in the audience, it looks like one of the most beautiful things in the world.” And while the film has already received Oscar buzz, maybe the tutus will too! –Jessie Goldberg

Expect a ‘Beautiful’ Wedding Dress for Bella in ‘Breaking Dawn’

INF

There’s a lot of pressure to find the perfect dress for any bride — and when that bride is Twilight heroine Bella Swan, the stakes are even higher! “I haven’t put the one on yet,” Kristen Stewart told MTV News on Monday night. The Swan-Cullen nuptials will be one of the most anticipated scenes of Breaking Dawn, the next movie adaptation of the hugely popular series by Stephenie Meyer, which is set to hit theaters in November 2011. “To be honest, it’s such a big deal,” said Kristen. “It’s such a big decision. I have a little hand in having a decision–or having an opinion more–but I think it’s pretty much up to Stephenie.” So what would be appropriate for a vampire-themed wedding? According to the book, something traditional with modern touches. InStyle even gathered designers last year to venture what Bella’s dress would look like– but it seems right now, it’s anybody’s guess! “I’m not quite sure exactly what it’s going to look like,” Kristen admitted, “but it will be beautiful, I’m sure.” Tell us: What do you think Bella’s wedding dress will look like? – Hana Choi

The Inside Scoop on Katy Perry’s Controversial ‘Bridal’ Sunglasses

INF

When accessory designer Kerin Rose heard that Katy Perry had been spotted wearing a traditional Indian bridal nose ring at the Jaipur airport last week, she got straight on the phone to the singer’s stylist and confirmed what she had been hoping — the bride-to-be was actually rocking her new $260 A-Morir “Darcy” sunglasses on the eve of her Indian wedding to comedian Russell Brand. Having worked with Perry several times before, she had no hesitation in lending the singer her latest design, which is adorned in bronze Swarovski crystals and features a gold chain across the face, a Gothic nod to the Indian pre-wedding ritual of wearing a nose ring chain known as a nath. “I thought Katy might wear them for a music video or something, and when I heard she [was] in India on the eve of her wedding, wearing them, it was just perfect,” she tells PEOPLE, adding: “Her stylist told me Katy loves them and won’t take them off!” As for the controversial chain position (on the non-virginal side), the designer, known for her avant-garde creations worn by Rihanna and Lady Gaga laughs: “I researched it before I designed them so it was very intentional. I want to make people think, it’s part of my thing.” Luckily for the N.Y.C.-based designer, Perry has never been afraid to take risks when it comes to fashion, which is precisely why the pair love working together. “She’s all about costume and theatrics and fun, and that’s what makes her so great. Getting dressed should be fun for everyone.” And that includes the stylish singer’s new husband, whom Rose would love to add to her ever-expanding client list. “He’s the type of man who could definitely carry off a whole lot of bling!” Read more about Katy and Russell’s wedding here. –Monique Jessen
