When Crystal Bowersox announced her engagement to fellow musician and longtime friend Brian Walker last month, she promised to be anything but the typical bridezilla — and from her unique earth-friendly dress to her diamond-free wedding ring, the season 9 American Idol runner-up seems to have stayed true to her word. The bride wore an organic, hemp and cotton wedding gown from Vermont designer Tara Lynn to exchange her vows on Sunday at the Chicago café where she first met Walker six years ago, saying ‘I do’ with a 1.1-carat princess cut ruby ring designed by Walker and crafted by Chicago’s Traci Coughlin and Steve Quick Jewelers. “There are no diamonds to be found as we don’t believe in the violence and injustice that occurs within the diamond trade industry,” Bowersox tells PEOPLE. “Both rings feature the masonry symbol, an infinity 8, and the Sanskrit symbol for the sound ‘om’ and a personal design that for us represents three: Brian, Crystal, and Tony.” As for her one of a kind wedding dress? “The gown is a simple princess line with an open back; a machine-knit hemp twine strap crisscrosses in back,” says designer, Tara Lynn. And new bride Bowersox couldn’t have been more pleased with the results. “I gave Tara Lynn the base ideas of what I wanted, and in three weeks, she created a beautiful gown made of hemp and cotton, with a handmade macramé and bead sunflower design on the front,” Crystal tells PEOPLE. “The train of the dress is a handmade design of hemp twine, sea shells, and beads, some of which came from pieces of sentimental jewelry.” Read more details on Crystal’s intimate Chicago wedding in the current issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday. –Gillian Koenig; reporting by Marisa Laudadio

What do Michelle Williams and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz have in common besides being the mom of an adorable child, past starring roles on the WB network and stunning good looks? Platinum blonde pixie cuts! After running around Hollywood with long ombre hair for quite a while, her husband Pete Wentz took to his Twitter account on Sunday to report that Ashlee had chopped and dyed her hair, marking a major beauty change up. “Ashlee Simpson-Wentz (@ashsimpsonwentz) new blonde pixie haircut is cute. Ill try and sneak a pic to post,” he wrote. Making good on his word Tuesday, Wentz posted a picture of Ashlee and their son Bronx, who now have matching white-blonde hair. “Yah fam headed out tonight stoked! Cute hair mama!” he Tweeted. And although Ashlee has frequently changed up her style in the past–switching between all shades of red, blonde and brown–we can’t decide which look we like best. Ever wondered what a successful male model buys his famous Hollywood actress girlfriend for her birthday? Well, if Louis Dowler is anything to go by, it’s luxe fashion all the way. For his girlfriend Kate Winslet‘s 35th birthday last month, he paid the Belstaff store in London a visit and came away with the perfect gift—one of their classic leather jackets. Store manager of the Mayfair boutique, Fabio de Matteis tells PEOPLE: “He wanted a special present for Kate and took his time looking at the whole collection.” After browsing the British brand’s iconic selection of leather jackets, shoes and accessories, he opted for the Triumph jacket, a fitted, belted style with stud detailing. And Dowler wasn’t shy when it came to gushing about the birthday girl. “He said how much Kate loved her motorcycle but she only had masculine things to wear on it, so he wanted to treat her to something more feminine.” Obviously, the jacket, which retails for more than $1,000, was a hit as Winslet has already been spotted working a new biker-chic look, accessorized with a smile and a certain model on her arm.
