Old Soles: New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg Has Only Six Pairs of Loafers

While most of our houses might fit into the closets where The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills store their shoes, Michael Bloomberg, New York’s low key billionaire mayor, has only six pairs of loafers! During a speech at QVC’s FFANY shoe sale event on Wednesday, Mayor Bloomberg joked, “A story emerged recently that shocked many in your industry, leaving them confused, perplexed, maybe even a little bit hurt. I’m talking about the stunning revelation in the September 20th edition of the New York Post, that I, Michael R. Bloomberg, 108th Mayor of the City of New York, may not have purchased a new pair of work shoes in ten years…if it’s in the Post it must be true.” So when PEOPLE encountered the thrifty mayor the next night at the Empire State Pride Agenda fall dinner, we had to ask if the story in the Post was true.“You have to talk to my press secretary who made up the story,” said Mayor Bloomberg with a smile. So does he actually have a lot of shoes? “Yeah, I do probably have half a dozen pairs, but it is true. I probably only wear one black and one brown and that’s about it,” he said. “I’d love to tell you I’m a big fashionista,” admitted the Mayor. “But it was really embarrassing, Ken Cole [shoe designer Kenneth Cole] happens to be a very close friend of mine, and I was with him the night before [the article appeared].” — Jeffrey Slonim

This is a pathetic story to be reporting on. Is this what People has come to on a slow news day? The mayor and his shoes are not newsworthy in the slightest. Come on People, give your readers more credit on what will hold their interest.

Uhh on

Wtf

Only?

ONLY?

Oh nos! This is press worthy! Someone help the mayor! He only has 6 pairs of loafers!

What a materialistic society we live in when it’s an upset because someone doesn’t have six pairs of one kind of footwear.

I have 4 pairs of shoes. Total. Not six pairs of loafers, plus runners, slippers, boots, and gods know what else he has.

Four.

And I’m female.

And I can afford more.

Pathetic.

I’m more interested in the fact that he wants to control every aspect of our lives !! Who cares about this dictator !

For years now, I’ve always wondered how many pairs of loafers Bloomberg owned. Finally someone had the good judgment to write aobut this important fact. Now I hope they check his underwear drawer.

Thanks for that hard hitting news. When it comes to entertainment news, it’s hard to beat expositions like this. What’s next? Singer Bono owns only one white t-shirt?

Frances Naeve on

Who cares???? Apparently he has 4 pair to spare so why not give them to someone who has NO shoes?

Jon on

Interesting!

I wish MTV Host, TJ Lavin, a speedy recovery from his Injuries that he suffered in a Dirt Bike Crash!

Who cares?? He has a LOT more than many other people!

How is this news?!?!?!
People magazine come one . . .really???

Hah! Bloomberg must be the only billionaire in the world with only 6 pairs of work shoes. The others probably have the equivalent of Barney’s shoe dept in their closets. Well good for him! Nice to know he’s not living life TOO FAR above your typical NYC corporate finance type! Oh the humbled life he leads….

Bennycassim on

They’re probably high quality shoes. You don’t need an arsenal of shoes, just a few well made ones. They would last for years, as he says, and would only need an infrequent resoling. They’re more of an upfront investment, but may actually cost less over the years.

Sharon on

Not sure why this is news, but It would have been a better story if he only had 1 pair of loafers, than that would have been shocking, but 6 pairs is a lot in a 10 year period.

SusiQ on

uhhhh. . .if six pairs of loafers is all he has, could I store some of my shoes in his closet? Just askin’

All these people that are appalled that they would print a story about shoes on people.com amaze me…why are you reading in the first place?

Sickitten on

Actually this is a great story as it proves that wealthy people don’t go shopping for frivolous things.

Are you kidding me?
Slow news day??
Fire this guys PR rep!!!
WTF ARE YOU PEOPLE SMOKING???

ME on

HOW is this newsworthy??? Are we supposed to CARE??

Gloria on

Um, you’re looking at People magazine for newsworthy stories? Following celebrity lives ad nauseam isn’t news. It’s entertainment. I think it’s an interesting article – how many billionaires can say the same about their shoe closets?

It’s refreshing to read about somebody else’s life once in a while istead of the usual suspects – aren’t we bored with reading about Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, Jessica and LC and Nicole’s fashions?!

The horror! The travesty! The unspeakable shame he’s brought on his loyal citizens! How dare the man have only SIX pairs of LOAFERS?!

Jeffery on

Well at $4000 a pair what would you expect?
