Peter Lindbergh for VOGUE

British style star Carey Mulligan is one of the few young actresses who has gained recognition for both her talent and her beauty, so it only makes sense that Vogue‘s October issue celebrates both. “Being on an American Vogue cover, everyday I am pinching myself. It’s beyond anything I ever thought would happen,” says the Oscar-nominated actress in this behind-the-scenes video, shot on location in the south of France. Captured for the October issue by renowned fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh dressed in fall/winter 2010 Haute Couture looks—driven overnight from the Paris runways to the shoot!—Carey brings some of the season’s finest couture back down to earth with her easy appeal. “She’s so utterly charming and we thought: [Let's] Put her charm into a big fancy couture dress,” says Vogue creative director Grace Coddington, who styled the actress. Kelly Bensimon on Her Coif: ‘Everyone is Obsessed With My Hair’

Jerritt Clark/WireImage

The Real Housewives of New York City might be used to their castmate Kelly Bensimon’s competitive spirit, but when it comes to a real rivalry, the reality star says that the competition is all in the hair. “Everyone is obsessed with my hair,” she told PEOPLE at a polo match to benefit Nacho Figueras’s Work to Ride Charity at the Bridgehampton Polo Club on Sunday. “They always want to touch it.” Kelly’s enviable tresses come at the experienced hands of her longtime colorist Kathleen Flynn Hui and stylist Bradley Irion, who was on hand at the Avantair-sponsored event to explain how he gives Kelly her chic curl and color. “We worked with her natural texture,” Irion said. “And then we just added to the beauty. We bumped up her base with a dark blonde, light brown, and then we hand painted highlights into the hair. We glaze that with a warm honey tone. It’s a natural gloss that bumps up the shine and enriches the highlights, so everything kind of blends together.” And Kelly can’t praise Irion’s work enough: “When I met Bradley, he said, your hair has to be natural. People are constantly coming up to me and touching my hair. That’s what Bradley gave me. . . this touchable, gorgeous hair that’s real,” she said. And there’s another Bensimon that Irion has lent his magic touch to, according to Kelly. “He even cuts my dog’s hair.” –Jeffrey Slonim

Victoria Beckham on Her Design Philosophy: ‘Would I Wear This?’

Richard Young/Startraks

As New York Fashion Week approaches, it’s British style maven Victoria Beckham that seems to be at the forefront of many fashionistas’ minds. From her recent British Fashion Council nomination for designer brand of the year to landing the front page of The New York Times‘ coveted Sunday Styles section, Posh seems to have earned herself the unlikely respect of the fashion crowd—no easy feat in the overcrowded celebrity-designer space. Her secret? “I don’t do anything by halves,” she tells the Times. “If you’re going to do something, do it properly, I think. Otherwise there is no point in doing something at all.” That philosophy extends to her hands-on approach to the design of her wildly popular dresses—favored by A-listers like Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez. “I might get a piece of fabric and tie it around me, then ask an assistant to pin it for me,” she says. “I’m not claiming to be a master draper. The bottom line is: Would I wear this?” And that attention to detail, fit and construction is what has earned her respect among retailers and fashion editors alike, even if Posh herself admits that she has “a long, long way to go” as a designer. Still, there is one star client Beckham would love to add to her growing list: First lady Michelle Obama. “I really would love to dress her.” –Gillian Koenig
