Sophia Bush Hits The Pavement To Help the Gulf Coast

Amanda Schwab/Startraks

Sophia Bush is gearing up to break a big sweat this fall—and all for a good cause. Although she hasn’t run a mile since junior high, the 28-year-old One Tree Hill star recently blogged about her plan to run a half marathon in November to benefit the Gulf Coast. Bush is determined to complete the 13.1-mile race despite a longtime battle with asthma. “An asthma attack is terrifying,” Bush wrote. “And when you’ve been debilitated by such attacks you begin to avoid activities that trigger them.” The stylish star kicked off her training last Wednesday with a one-mile treadmill run, and has increased her workouts daily. As week two of training begins, she is running with a group of about 12 runners. To get fit for roles in the past, Bush has worked with trainers who helped whip her body into “fighting shape.” Now, she’s taking her workout to the streets in an effort to raise money for the people of the Gulf Coast. “They need all the help they can get,” wrote Bush, who is reaching out to friends and family to garner sponsorship dollars. “So I am running. For the Gulf. For all of you. Because when my lungs start hurting, and my legs start screaming ‘this running business is BULL, Sophia!’ I think of all of YOU.” To learn more, check out sophiabush.com. –Katherine Perry

How Elle Macpherson Stays Beach Ready At 46

Newspix/Rex USA

Supermodel Elle Macpherson spends plenty of time on the beach, so how does she keep the saltwater, sun and sand from ravaging her looks? The answer, according to the Aussie icon, is easy: She uses the elements to her advantage. “I don’t really touch my hair. It tends to form dreadlocks quite easily in the summer, but I leave them,” she says. “And I leave in the salt water, which is a great evening styling aid. In fact, Bumble and Bumble offers salt-water-infused Surf Spray. Anything that I do emphasizes the natural way my hair is.” And that woven cowboy hat that’s become her summer signature? It’s more about function than fashion. “A lot of people think I wear a cowboy hat because it’s part of my look,” she says, “but it actually is to protect my hair. I collect them along my travels, so I might find one in a thrift shop in Costa Rica. It’s that simple. Or that exotic.” The final key to Macpherson’s low-maintenance beauty routine? Bronze skin–in a compact. “I don’t put my face in the sun and I use Neutrogena and Invisible Zinc sunscreen,” says the mother of two. “But the thing that complements the hair most is the skin. My hair looks more golden because the color of my skin is quite golden. I use Revlon bronzers. The tawny skin with the tawny hair–that’s the whole look.” Read more from Elle in this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.–Suzanne Zuckerman

Emma Watson Loses Her ‘Potter’ Locks: Love It or Hate It?

Flynet

Oh boy! Britain’s pint size fashion plate Emma Watson has made her latest style turn—or should we say cut? Following in the recent sheering footsteps of celebs-gone-pixie like Hayden Panettiere and Cate Blanchett, the fashionista was snapped with a boy-short haircut while out and about in N.Y.C.’s West Village earlier this week and confirmed her new do on Twitter and Facebook with accompanying self portrait, telling fans, “Feels incredible. I love it.” With the wrap of the Harry Potter film franchise this past spring, Watson’s made a clear cut from her Hogwarts alter-ego Hermione Granger and her famously bushy locks, but like the onscreen know-it-all, she carefully considered her decision to go short: “I’ve wanted to do this for years and years; it’s the most liberating thing ever.” It’s a look that’s sure to turn heads when the Ivy Leaguer returns for her second year at Brown University in the fall, and we look forward to seeing the style risk taker put her signature mark on the look – on and off campus. Tell us: What do you think of Emma’s new cut?Christie LaRusso

Kristen Bell’s Charity Shoe Revealed!

Courtesy Shoedazzle; Dennis Van Tine/Retna

She lends her seductive voice to narrate the hit show Gossip Girl, and now actress Kristen Bell is also lending her stylish hand to charity—designing a one-of-a-kind pair of shoes to benefit children battling serious medical conditions. With the help of 25 young patients at L.A.’s Shriners Hospitals for Children last spring, the star spent an afternoon designing the chic pair of shoes as part of the Art of Elysium workshop, a non-profit that brings actors, musicians and artists into the lives of hospitalized children. Bell and her helpers came up with the “Midge,” a $39.95 gladiator-inspired platform sandal that comes in a versatile neutral shade. “I wanted it to be comfortable and in a color you can use a lot,” said Bell. Proceeds from sales of the limited-edition shoe, available at ShoeDazzle.com starting August 9 until supplies last, will go to the Art of Elysium’s programs. “I was excited to partner with ShoeDazzle to design a one-of-a-kind shoe benefiting The Art of Elysium,” said the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star. “I hope that the women who purchase this shoe will wear it with pride, and feel beautiful, knowing that they are supporting a wonderful cause.” –Maureen Harrington
