How Julia Roberts’ Costumer Beat the Heat for ‘Eat Pray Love’

Sony

From Europe to Bali, filming Eat Pray Love was one hot job–literally! With temperatures soaring to over 100 degrees in some locations, it was no easy task keeping star Julia Roberts in costume and comfortable. “I made sure the clothes were as light as they possibly could be and still told the story,” Eat Pray Love costume designer Michael Dennison tells PEOPLE. And the scorching heat wasn’t the only issue for the skilled costumer when it came to dressing Julia. While shooting in Rome, Dennison also had to account for his leading lady’s real and perceived weight gain due to all those eating scenes. “She probably put on about seven pounds,” he admits. “I scaled down clothes and stuff like that to make them look tighter, and loosened up clothes to make it look like she was gaining more weight than she actually did.” And by the time they got to India, the progression to baggy clothing seemed natural for Julia’s character. “It was intrinsic to the Ashram that her clothes be as loose and flowy and airy as possible,” says Dennison. “It’s like a dress-code, they’re prayer clothes and also work clothes, and to be practical you [don't] want anything close to your body. It’s too hot!” –Andrea DeSimone; with reporting by Mary Green

Kristin Cavallari Contemplates Life as a Brunette

Celebrity Photo

It looks like former Hills star Kristin Cavallari may be embracing the show’s series finale by shedding her blonde bombshell image. The once buttery blonde darkened her hair to a shade of warm honey just in time for fall. “I just dyed it today!” Cavallari told PEOPLE at The Blackberry Torch Launch Party in Los Angeles this week. “I was bored with my hair and it’s the first time I was able to dye my hair because of filming for The Hills. You could never change your hair. ‘I thought: I can, why not!’” To complete the transformation, the blonde beauty also added some wispy bangs for an updated look. However, Cavallari admits she isn’t done going under the bottle and is even contemplating life as a brunette. “I don’t think I’ll be a full brunette but I definitely want to put a little bit more dark in it,” she said. “Not too much though.” Tell us: Do you think Kristin should go brunette or stay blonde?–Michelle Ward

Katy Perry Gets ‘Hearts Racing’ in Her Skin-Tight Jeans

Courtesy Diesel

While Katy Perry might have declared “daisy dukes with a bikini on top” the signature uniform of “California Gurls”, the quirky singer is trading in her bedazzled Diesel short-shorts for a new pair of jeans from the Italian brand: The Livier 65Z 5-pocket jean leggings style! In her new music video for “Teenage Dream,” Katy shakes it on the beach in the new jeggings. Hugging her famous curves in all the right places, these new jeans are sure to “get your heart racing,” as Katy croons in her new song. And just like her Swarovski-covered daisy dukes, Katy put her own finishing touches on these Diesels by slashing tiny holes in the legs. While the pop star might be the first person to own this brand new style of Diesel jean leggings, she won’t be the only one! Come November you can get your hands on your own pair for $170 in Diesel stores worldwide and at diesel.com. –Andrea DeSimone

Christina Ricci Debuts New Broadway Bob

Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic

Christina Ricci is not only making her first Broadway appearance, but she’s also debuting a brand new look. Before hitting the stage this fall for Time Stands Still, Ricci chopped off her long, luscious locks in favor of a wispy chin-grazing bob. “For the play they wanted this and it was time to make a drastic change,” Ricci explained to PEOPLE at The Blackberry Torch Launch Party in Los Angeles Wednesday night. “It feels good.” The pint-sized actress, who also brightened her bob with chestnut highlights, likes to mix it up. “I change my hair pretty much every six months,” said Ricci, “I’m one of those people that I like to change constantly, like I go blonde, dark, short, long. I can’t stop changing. I like it.” Not that Ricci won’t be craving long hair in the future, saying “I’m getting extensions soon.” Tell us: What do you think of Christina’s new do?Michelle Ward

How Bride-to-Be Hilary Duff is Stepping Up Her Pre-Wedding Workouts

Sipa

Before getting hitched to NHL player Mike Comrie, bride-to-be Hilary Duff is leaning on trainer-to-the-stars Harley Pasternak to help get her in top wedding form. With other svelte A-listers like newlywed Megan Fox and soon-to-be married Jennifer Hudson on his client list, the author of The 5-Factor World Diet clearly knows what it takes to get women in gown-ready shape. “The key is to have amazing shoulders, amazing arms, posture is really important,” Pasternak tells PEOPLE. “But it’s also important to have a really tight midsection, because the way a wedding dress hugs your midsection, you really want it lean and tight.” So how is he upping the ante on Hilary’s usual gym regimen to get her ready for the big day? “Instead of a five-minute cardio warm-up and a five-minute cardio cool-down, maybe we extend those cardio phases to 15 minutes before and after our workout,” says Pasternak. And Hilary’s pre-wedding routine isn’t just about fitness—diet is also key. Each fuel-charged day consists of five meals: a breakfast burrito, mid-morning snack (berry smoothie), lunch (chopped salad), afternoon snack (apple cinnamon oatmeal cookie) and dinner (“she loves Japanese food”). We all know keeping fit is de rigueur in Hollywood, so how is the former tween queen responding to the stringent workouts? “I think she vocally disliked them all!” says Pasternak. But no hard work goes unnoticed. “She looks toned and tight… I’m really proud of her, she looks fantastic.” –Hana Choi; reporting by Thailan Pham
