EXCLUSIVE: Football Star Troy Polamalu's Hair Now Insured for $1 Million

08/30/2010 at 01:30 PM ET

Courtesy Head and Shoulders

Heads up NFL. Opposing teams had better mind the hair pulling–Head & Shoulders has taken out a $1 million Lloyds of London policy protecting their spokesperson, Pittsburgh Steelers’ Troy Polamalu’s famous ringlets. “It’s like J.Lo’s insured butt!” he jokes, comparing the famous urban legend surrounding the singer’s derriere to learning about his own very real insurance policy. The beauty brand has reason to keep Troy’s 35″ tresses under lock and key: Women and men across America are desperate for the secret to those Samoan curls, with some of his manliest teammates even trying to score the secret. “One guy in particular… is stealing all of my Head & Shoulder products,” he laughs. Taking 45 minutes pregame to care for his hair has become a ritual for the all-pro safety, who explains, “It’s correlated to what a warrior in the past would do to prepare for war. You have the Mongolians, the Japanese Samurai, the Spartans–all of these warriors with long hair…and in that way you can almost get into the mind-way, preparing for some type of battle when you are doing your hair.” After eight years without so much as a trim, would Troy ever consider cutting his signature locks? “With this big hair insurance–I don’t think so!” he says. –Katherine Kluznik Rentmeester

His hair looks ridiculous. Please cut it all off!Talk about a good nesting spot for lice!

Maria on

Is it just me or does he remind anyone else of Diana Ross?

Tami on

I could not agree more re: Locks of Love. He really should consider it. After all — hair grows back. And for him, it would appear to grow FAST. He could even have raffle off tickets to one lucky person who gets to “make the cut,” all proceeds going to cancer research.

Jennifer on

Seriously people? You want to know his secret? HE’S SOMOAN!! Duh! Doesn’t matter what products you use, you will never get that hair!

Jen on

People, please – this photo is not his real hair! It is a photo from an ad for Head and Shoulders. It’s a joke.

He is one of the most decent people you’ll ever meet. A good man with great hair.

wow, he has beautiful hair…no he shouldn’t cut it. there is no one out there with hair like his. Why should he be like everybody else.. I would LOVE to have hair like that… maybe not that big, but i would love to have that texture.

trsquare on

That can’t be his real hair in the picture because then he’d never get his helmet on. He does have a great head of hair, though, but it IS only hair and to have it insured for $1 million is ridiculous.

GoodTxGirl on

People it IS his hair and he braids it tightly which is why it takes 45 minutes pre-game – did ANY OF YOU watch the Pittsburgh game last night?

Tam on

just because someone has long hair doesn’t mean they should cut it off and give it to charity. Should I give one of my kids to a couple who is infertile? What is up with everyone thinking just because someone has more of something they should share? isn’t that communism?

Vannessa on

Peggy Smith – a nesting bed for lice? That comment makes you sound angry and hateful. You probably think that way because his hair it looks so different from what you think it pretty or clean. Open your mind.

OMG…please tell me you people don’t actually think this picture is of his real hair. It is obviously fake and exaggerated for a humorous commercial. And he doesn’t tightly braid his hair either (which PS would take more than 45 minutes). Google the man, you’ll get your answers.

April on

This picture is of some fake hair!! Just saw him at training camp and his hair is not this crazy!! Troy does lots of charity work in our area (pittsburgh) and in his home state of Hawaii. He has his own foundation to help others as well. I believe that the local news media has asked him about donating his hair and its an after football plan.

Brenda on

Hey Jen,
Ask Aaron Lockett if Troy is a good guy. I bet you’ll receive a far different answer than yours.

I wonder what football player out there is willing to pay an NFL fine and “accidently” pull the mop. I’d contributute.

If you all had the opportunity for such a grand contract, you would probably do the same. Don’t tell others what to do with their money. He may be already donating funds to a charity or various charities.

funny how people think you are selfish if you have long hair and don’t donate it to Locks of Love. Do your research- Locks of Love throws away lots of the donated hair and CHARGES those kids for wigs.

and if someone has long hair and doesn’t want to cut it- leave them alone. they aren’t selfish.

Many of the posts here have criticized him for not donating his hair to Locks of Love. However, I’m pretty certain the hair is a large part of the Samoan culture. He also happens to be a very kind, generous person.

It’s absolutely amazing the amount of jealousy shown in these posts towards this man’s hair. If you want to donate YOUR hair to Locks of Love, then do it, but it’s none of your business what this man does with his hair. He obviously takes good care of it. Those thinking about lice or smells, it most likely reflects back on those particular posters and their own hygiene.

Dale on

This “insurance policy” is all just one big publicity stunt, so head and shoulders can get more publicity for the campaign.

How can his hair get injured, I just don’t get it….someone will sneak into his house at night and cut it all off?

This article is just giving the advertiser what they want, free publicity.

[...] People reports that Head & Shoulders has covered their spokerperson’s double hair waterfall with a halo of protection by buying an insurance policy from Lloyds of London. Jen is correct, this is not all his hair. LOL! His hair is much tamer but still that beautiful Samoan gene hair! You should watch a Steeler game, his hair bouncing away while he’s running and making a flying leap to tackle someone. You can’t miss him on the field!

You have to be Samoan to have hair like that. hahahaha

This isn’t his real hair, it shows that in the link. His real hair hasn’t been cut in years because of his religious beliefs, so he won’t be donating it. And his pregaming doesn’t include tightly braiding it- you can see it flying around his helmet! Nevermind it would take atleast 2 hours to even row hair like his lol. Luv you Troy♥

Locks of love is a great organization, but you guys can’t be serious acting like he is selfish for having hair. His hair has so much to do with who he is, If you knew anything about his life, you would appreciate his hair instead of pretending your offended by it.

It is a wig. Look close where it parts in the front. You can see the real hair underneath. But it matters not! The only thing that matters is when he bands it into a pony tail and becomes a warrior. Then, he is awesome! GO STEELERS!

trorfan2 on

Oh my! So much hate on here! He should NOT donate his hair, you people are weirdos for even asking him to do that. That is your idea of charity, not his. Leave his hair alone. He DOES look like a man. C’mon, Americans, open your little minds and eyes a bit bigger to understand CULTURE. And the pic is a fake, and if you can’t see that, you really do need to open your eyes or get some glasses or imagination. TROLLS.

Angelique on

He is Samoan…his hair is part of his culture. In his culture, it is what makes the man. Troy is one of the best in the NFL, both as a player, and a person. Troy is one man I don’t mind my 6 year old daughter having on her wall. Don’t knock him ladies, he’s all good!

Carrow Ashley on

He is so beautiful. His wife is so lucky…

To labor: If you watch him going up against a receiver on the field you will see how manly he is! That man should be outlawed in all 50 states he is so lethal on the field. I love watching him play and I’m not even a Steelers fan (go Cowboys!!!).

Obviously many of you are not football fans. That picture above is exaggerated. His hair is not that big its for the shampoo commercial that he endorses.

All you that said he needs to cut his hair how about you cut yours and donate it? His hair is apart of his culture and he is very devoted to it.

America on

His real hair is gorgeous and it identifies him on the field. I love to see him running down the football field with all that hair trailing behind him. The only downside is that players have tackled him by his hair…ouch. Because its not secured under his helmet its considered a part of his uniform.

April I don’t think he is from Hawaii (I could be wrong though) I’ve always read California. But I agree he is a good person. He is religiously devout, doesn’t party, drink or smoke. He volunteers and donates to many charities.

A million dollars is crazy though…he’d probably donate it should he ever had to cash that puppy in.

I followed a link to this site and noticed how unbelievably annoying it is. While reading a paragraph a pop up appeared in front of the text, not a paid add mind you, an internal link with giant pink stars. Next I tried to comment, clicking the link that says comment either scrolls you to the top of the page or is a direct link, not sure but either way shouldn’t it lead you to an anchor placed somewhere near the comment form. Also, what’s with the hot pink and blue? I’m guessing the site was designed by an outdated print designer. I just thought I’d throw that out there for you, most likely it will be ignored but somehow I feel better at least trying to help you step your web game up.

Tawny Cat on

Lay off! As long as he keep playing great football, I love his hair.

Hey Troy, if you’re reading these, try the Moroccan Oil line of hair products. Their shampoo, conditioner, and intense curl creme are the best I’ve ever tried. They leave your hair soft and shiny, and the scent is really fantastic. My hairdresser just got it in and raves about it.

People, please read for content.

1. Look at the picture. Beneath, it has these words- “Courtesy Head and Shoulders”. It’s an ad photo, a humerous one at that.

2. HE did not take out the policy. Head and Shoulders did, as a protection on the investment htey have made in hiring Polamalu as their spokesperson. If he were to cut the hair, or have a wad pulled out, it would be difficult for their ad campaign to continue as planned, thus costing them a great deal of money. So they insured it. It’s called smart business. And if he went and donated it to Locks of Love, he’d be sued 47 ways to Sunday.

All I can say is WOW! He plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I saw it the other day on Yahoo Headline news. It always a cusoriity and surprises me how some men hair grow much faster and thicker than a woman’s hair. It’s so wild and curly. I was wondering how does he get it all under a helmet. Could you imagine him wearing cornrows or two strand twists? In my honest opinion, it’s a lovely lion mane but it’s too much. His hair must take a long time to dry as well, it’s so thick! All that hair grown in 10 years. Wow. If he ever wants to cut it, he should donate it to the Locks of Love.Is he Filipino or from the islands like Hawaii? He looks Samoan.
