The reason you can see some stars etbter with you peripheral vision is because your central retina is designed for high resolution vision with plenty of light. It contains cones that allow you to see colors. Your peripheral retina contains rods that are etbter at capturing low amounts of light. If you were looking at a picture that does not emit light, your central retina would do etbter at allowing you to see small details. Peripheral retina for sky. Central retina for picture.
