How Bride-to-Be Hilary Duff is Stepping Up Her Pre-Wedding Workouts

08/13/2010 at 09:00 AM ET

Sipa

Before getting hitched to NHL player Mike Comrie, bride-to-be Hilary Duff is leaning on trainer-to-the-stars Harley Pasternak to help get her in top wedding form. With other svelte A-listers like newlywed Megan Fox and soon-to-be married Jennifer Hudson on his client list, the author of The 5-Factor World Diet clearly knows what it takes to get women in gown-ready shape. “The key is to have amazing shoulders, amazing arms, posture is really important,” Pasternak tells PEOPLE. “But it’s also important to have a really tight midsection, because the way a wedding dress hugs your midsection, you really want it lean and tight.” So how is he upping the ante on Hilary’s usual gym regimen to get her ready for the big day? “Instead of a five-minute cardio warm-up and a five-minute cardio cool-down, maybe we extend those cardio phases to 15 minutes before and after our workout,” says Pasternak. And Hilary’s pre-wedding routine isn’t just about fitness—diet is also key. Each fuel-charged day consists of five meals: a breakfast burrito, mid-morning snack (berry smoothie), lunch (chopped salad), afternoon snack (apple cinnamon oatmeal cookie) and dinner (“she loves Japanese food”). We all know keeping fit is de rigueur in Hollywood, so how is the former tween queen responding to the stringent workouts? “I think she vocally disliked them all!” says Pasternak. But no hard work goes unnoticed. “She looks toned and tight… I’m really proud of her, she looks fantastic.” –Hana Choi; reporting by Thailan Pham

That’s great to all hear!

She always strikes me as somebody who’s a bit insecure and always trying to change her physical appeareance, that’s just my perception.

Brandi on

Great, let’s continue to perpetrate the myth that women should be as skinny as possible on their wedding day. This girl is already thin, and she’s always been thin.. While I am not against staying in shape when you get married but this only encourages women to go on unhealthy crash diets so they can live up to some ridiculous idea of what they are SUPPOSED to look like on their wedding day. BOO!

ProudMom on

I know a DJ at a radio station who met her & said she was real b*tch. Her assistant carried her dog for her & said no one could speak to Hilary or even look at her.

Piccollo on

LOL she needs to work-out just to be able to carry that ring around.

sam on

what are you talking about brandi?! they never once mentioned losing weight at all, just words like ‘fitness’ and ‘tight’. any bride-to-be would love to tone up and look/feel her best on the day she’s dreamed about all her life. Five meals a day is pretty much what is recommended for healthy living and a breakfast burrito and japanese food does not sound like a crash diet to me. it amazes me how people just jump to any opportunity to push people down. leave the poor girl (celebrity or otherwise) alone to have the wedding day she’s always wanted!

Julio on

People like her are making bad examples for the people that are looking up to her. Wonder why you hear and see in the news of kids that want to be like them and end up dead. Everyone should accept who they are because no one is perfect in the world. Someone always have a secret behind their door.

Brittany on

She looks fantastic! Of course she would want to look her best on her wedding day, there is nothing wrong with living a healthy life full of fitness and good food! If anything this article sends a positive message to our increasingly obese society, seriously……

To Julio: Really, what is wrong with wanting to live a healthy life and look your best everyday? Would you prefer her to be sitting around all day….eating fast food….is that a good message to send? Or maybe partying and drinking all night…..Hilary is a fine example for young adults.

Get a life all of you negative people.

I assisted Hilary Duff & her fiancee recently and they’re both extremely down to earth and very kind people. If you didn’t know who Hilary Duff was, you’d never know she was a celebrity. She’s very unassuming. I have to admit she’s also far more beautiful in person. Oh and saw the ring up close and it’s stunning! I’m very very happy for them and it’s very clear they’re sincerely in love. Congratulations Hilary & Mike!

Does anyone know what kind of tennis shoes she is wearing? Want them!

Wow, now the fat girls are dissing the girls who get skinny by eating right and exercising? Seriously, jealous much?

LV on

Tennis shoes? What does that mean? You mean sneakers?

KH on

I don’t think this is a fat girls vs. skinny girls fight. It’s fine to shape up the body you have a little bit for your wedding day. It’s fine to make permanent changes to improve your health.

What bugs me is a culture (ex. Buff Brides, Bride Wars) that encourages women to make massive changes just for that day.

If you’re normally a size 12 and you plan to revert to the habits that make you be a size 12 after you get married, don’t starve and run yourself to death to be a size 4 for one day. Who wants to look like someone else in their wedding pics?

Amanda on

Longhorns rule!!! But seriously though, she looks awesome, and in response to some of the other comments all i have to say is there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look your best on your wedding day, if anything i commend her for using exercise as a way of reaching her goal rather than some crazy unhealthy diet.

I love you Hilary on

I love Hilary duff so much I’m one of her biggest fans I’m so happy for her :) and she looks great :)

ray on

My god! what now, people can’t stay in shape? you losers who says she’s trying to lose weight or being a bad example shut the f*ck up, it’s HER wedding and HER life, wouldn’t you want to look nice for that day? please! She’s the most down to earth celebrity out there, no one can ever say she have ever been a bad example. LOVE YOU ALWAYS HD.

Sean on

Whenever I’d see articles like this, I always used to go and try the same diet or workout that the celebrity was doing. It would always tick me off how it seemed so easy for these people and so hard for me. Then the light bulb turned on. These people are getting personal customized training and nutrition by these celebrity trainers. What they’re doing won’t work for me. I’m not in the same position. Anyway, just started a new program from fullyfunctionalfitness.com so we’ll see how it goes. It’s tailor made to my needs so wish me luck! I have a wedding to get ready for too!!!!

Michele on

Did some of you read the same article that the rest of us read? No where did this say she was on a crash diet or that she wanted to lost weight! She just wants to be in shape and look beautiful for her day…is that a crime! I think if more people would start to look in the mirror and want to look good then maybe we would not have the obesity problem that we have in this world. Getting in shape is a good thing and does not mean that you have to crash diet or anything else!I sure do not get all of you that jumped to the wrong conclusion on this article.

She looks fat, what is everyone whining about?

iam on

Interesting that the trainer would give her so many carbs / starches: burrito, oatmeal, Japanese food (rice). That’s exactly how to gain weight and not healthy weight. Think greens, vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds and then maybe some starches and optionally some fresh, healthy, recently killed animals. Anyway, just proves just because somebody sets themselves as a trainer doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about. Nutrition 101 is a good start.

Bill on

Good luck to you Hilary on your wedding day!

junean on

I think she looks great and her hard work is paying off! Don’t hate her because she is beautiful! God bless both you and your groom to be on your upcoming nuptials. I wish you nothing but happiness…

Lyn on

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but really? It’s HER wedding day and HER life. If she wants to be a size 0, what’s it to us? Truth be told, we’re all interested or else we wouldn’t have even read the story in the first place. Not only that, but Hollywood perpetuates the myths that, in order to be accepted, you must be a size minus 0 or whatever. But at the end of the day, she’s confident being who she is and I’m confident being me.

K on

good for her, i’m sure she’ll look great! cute and classic work out outfit she’s wearing too.

Re:Brandi’s comments and all other haters!
Obviously Brandi (and other haters)you know nothing about exercise and eating healthy, nor anything about Harley Pasternak’s workout regime. He is a fantastic trainer and promotes healthy eating and exercise..NOT crash diets. Just because a person is skinny does not mean that he/she is healthy. It’s quite obvious that you have an issue with skinny healthy people, which would lead me to believe that your either overweight and/or unhealthy, which also indicates that you are lazy and cannot commit to anything. If you had any idea how difficult it is to maintain a healthy diet and body you would understand how much hard work is put into it. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment to stay fit and eat healthy with all the temptations out there. It’s much easier to be lazy and eat junk and that’s the categorie you would fall into. You shouldn’t be writing comments on topics you have no knowledge about.
It’s always people like you who hate others for things they are to lazy or unwilling to do. You wouldn’t last a week eating healthy and exercising. Maybe you should just keep your mouth shut and you could probably loose some weight.
Just saying…to all those jealous people.

I thought the article was positive. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look your best on your wedding day! The article mentioned nothing about losing weight. It mentioned the importance of great shoulders/posture and a tight mid-section. Nothing is more important than staying in shape!

Payton on

Hilary already was tiny and thin. It makes me sad to think she needed to be thinner.

Raquel on

OMG, I love reading the comments on these, people get all butt hurt about people they have never met and dont know. Yeah everyone wants to look good on there wedding day, but why not be happy with who you are and what you look like. It’s a simple solution people dont seem to ever consider obviously the dude she is marrying loves her for the person she is before the wedding crazed workouts.

I love Hilary and she is a great person, all those people with negative to say, please be nice.

You guys need to shut up honestly. If the girl wants to look good on her wedding day, she’s entitled to that. If the girl wants to change her body shape she can do that. It’s not her fault that people go on crash diets, it’s because those people mentally think that crash diets are better than eating healthy and working out. If you don’t feel good about something about yourself, fix it. At the end of the day it’s your happiness that matters.
