How Elle Macpherson Stays Beach Ready At 46

Supermodel Elle Macpherson spends plenty of time on the beach, so how does she keep the saltwater, sun and sand from ravaging her looks? The answer, according to the Aussie icon, is easy: She uses the elements to her advantage. “I don’t really touch my hair. It tends to form dreadlocks quite easily in the summer, but I leave them,” she says. “And I leave in the salt water, which is a great evening styling aid. In fact, Bumble and Bumble offers salt-water-infused Surf Spray. Anything that I do emphasizes the natural way my hair is.” And that woven cowboy hat that’s become her summer signature? It’s more about function than fashion. “A lot of people think I wear a cowboy hat because it’s part of my look,” she says, “but it actually is to protect my hair. I collect them along my travels, so I might find one in a thrift shop in Costa Rica. It’s that simple. Or that exotic.” The final key to Macpherson’s low-maintenance beauty routine? Bronze skin–in a compact. “I don’t put my face in the sun and I use Neutrogena and Invisible Zinc sunscreen,” says the mother of two. “But the thing that complements the hair most is the skin. My hair looks more golden because the color of my skin is quite golden. I use Revlon bronzers. The tawny skin with the tawny hair–that’s the whole look.” Read more from Elle in this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.–Suzanne Zuckerman

It’s called botox and starving yourself.

Mary on

Um, you don’t have to starve yourself to stay thin. It’s called eating healthy and exercising. You might want to try it.

Jon on

That’s great to hear!

I thought this was about a workout regimen. Big whoop on the sunscreen and hat, that’s commen sense stuff. Makes her no different than anyone else out there.

whoop – “common”

Just an article to plug products.

I think she meant to say “zinc sunscreen and endangered rhino horn powder”. Silly of her to leave that part out.

She is gorgeous! If only I were 6ft tall my weight would be distributed evenly and then I would look like her too. It’s ok to hate her because she’s beautiful :)

Jennifer on

She looks amazing! It shows women can look beautiful at any age! Great inspiration!

it’s very possible to look good if do exercise not occasionally but year by year. Some lazy persons would rather say something bad like she’s starving or so, cuz it’s easy for them to bear.. She’s beautiful!

Pascale on

she forgot to mention visit to the spa on a weekly basis, getting her beauty sleep and some minor surgeries here and there….

Lets ask Elle about the rhino horn powder she ingests to stay younger….from endangered rhinos! Would love to hear how that makes he stay younger!

I can’t believe the haters! She looks amazing! I know a few women between 40 and 50 at my gym that look almost as good with no plastic surgery. They eat right and work out and stay out of the sun. They are my inspiration. They look better than I did in my 20’s.

This is truly inspiring…I really hate her, just kidding! She is probably one of my favorite supermodels who just seems to keep getting better with age. She epitomizes what a model should look like, or at least what they used to look like back in the day before they started looking like heroine addicts lol! Anyway, good for her!

She looks like Kelly from The New York Housewives on Bravo.

She looks wonderful, she has a healthy-thin body. Anyone should hope to look that good at her age, after having two children. She has so much money, her “job,” is to look good. Has all the time in the world to exercise and can afford all healthy foods to eat. You need to get rid of the green eyed monster, every time you see a woman who takes care of herself…..you think she starves herself? Come on, those who struggle with money. Mac and cheese is cheaper than fresh veggies. And you can feed more with a box of mac and cheese, for less money.

Wow people sure do hate. You can look good at any age if you eat right and exercise. The problem is people always think that if you are thin you starve yourself. People need to stop hating and take their self to the gym if they want to see a change in their body.Granted people have different genes but everybody should workout to stay healthy.
The point is do not get mad at Elle because she still looks good, and workout if you are so unhappy with your body.

To all the haters out there- if you had all of the options avalible to you you know damn well you would take advantage of them.. stop hating on someone for being more privlidged then you because of the choices she made.. OR better yet.. get off your lazy ass and do that for yourself!

She does look great, but it is also her job to do so, and she has some good genes to start out with. It’s a lot harder to look like that when you don’t have the luxury to spend all day every day on beauty care. That being said, there are a lot of people that have the luxury of time, and do not use it in that way. She doesn’t look like she is starving, but she clearly watches what she eats very carefully, and is probably on the lower end of the bmi. Also, she has always looked like that, and it is a lot easier to maintain, than to try to create that body from one that is a flabby mess.

While I don’t condone women’s obsession with being thin, I do think everybody should take care of themselves. We easily confuse being thin with being healthy — the two are not the same thing. And bodies that look like a model’s body take work and discipline. It is their career and their income depends on looking that way — why do people with normal jobs keep comparing themselves?!

She looks great!
