Caftans Are Back! Would You Wear One?

First it was turbans, and now it’s caftans. That’s right — the ’70s fashion staple made famous by Mrs. Roper on Three’s Company has flowed from the beaches to the streets this summer on some unexpected stars. In July, Jessica Simpson floated on air during her birthday getaway with boyfriend Eric Johnson, strolling through Capri in a plunging orange and giraffe-print caftan that made for the perfect shore-to-shopping look. This weekend, we spotted not only uber-stylist Rachel Zoe in a dramatic leopard print caftan in the Hamptons, but also Hillary Clinton getting seriously glam in bold turquoise and navy caftan for her daughter Chelsea’s rehearsal dinner in Rhinebeck, NY. Is it nostalgia? Inspiration from Sex and the City 2? Are we all just sick of tight jeggings? We think the caftan’s voluminous cut paired with exotic prints and luxurious fabrics make it the perfect end of summer look—glamorous and comfortable. Tell us: What do you think? Would you wear a caftan? – Mai Dinh

It looks like a MOO MOO!! Not flattering at all….for any figure.

I will try it when I go to the beach for a dinner, but it seems it makes me look fat. You can´t show your body!

They’re the PERFECT cover up for the beach with a belt to create an empire waist. idk about walking around the streets of LA shopping in one, but..to each her own.

I am old enough to remember muumuu’s, and a caftan DOES NOT look like a muumuu. In the late 1950′s, we were in middle of a calypso (Belafonte) craze. Later during this craze, TPTB introduced the muumuu from Hawaii, and even us teens were wearing them everywhere! Actually, because the muumuu is so easy to make, the missionaries introduced it to the Hawaiian’s and it instantly became daily wear. You start with a wideband scooped neckline and add fully gathered short or long skirtdress around that. That’s basically it.

The caftan/kaftan is from the countries bordering the Mediterrannean Sea and is usually long skirt and long sleeves. BE CAREFUL of the shorter sleeves (see Hilary’s pic) because of the large arm holes. With the arm raised like Hilary’s, you can see down to the waistline.

When I was thinner, I loved to wear dashiki (African origin) long dresses or tops. Beautiful embroidery. These are great if you want to get your man a similar look!

I’m not giving these guys free advertising. I’m just a 67 year old plus-size who likes fun styles AND comfort, so I just used my search site and mail ordered. Enjoy!

I would def wear one around the house and as a cover up to the beach. I wouldn’t wear a caftan to dinner or shopping. It’s just too much material to lug around. I’m size 0-1 but with curves and I would hate to hide them in a caftan.
